“Nice Hotel”
Reviewed 3 August 2011

Stayed here prior to catching a plane to Florida. Nice Hotel, although during the winter when it is cold and snowing the rooftop hot tub is not very inviting.

Staff was good.

Most of our family are light sleepers and even with close proximity to airport you could not hear the air traffic.

My husband and I made a visit to Calgary for the Canada Day long weekend and then into the next week, visiting friends and family around Calgary and also in Okotoks, so we stayed at the Acclaim. We had a great experience.

As others have previously said, it is very remote. But most of our friends live on the northside, so we were more concerned with amenities, free parking, and free internet since we'd be there almost a week. The hotels in town will charge you for every last thing. So we were pleased at the ease of checkin, the professional staff, and most of what we saw.

We liked the little touches like free lemon water and apples at the front desk, the small TV (and scale!) in the bathroom (in addition to the multijet shower!), the free DVD checkout (we finally got to see Inglorious Basterds and True Grit), and the nightly goodies in the bar (we just had wine, no snacks).

The room was clean, and the decor was nice and modern, but don't expect much of a view. You're at the edge of town with a gravel drive outside. No biggie. We weren't in Banff or anything, expecting to see mountains.

We ate at Pacini restaurant several times, each time for breakfast. It's OK, but if you're watching your carbs, the bread buffet is kind of a waste. Many of the dishes are served with what they call the "Vitalita Duo," but it's really just a fancy name for a tiny shooter glass of strawberry smoothie and a really dry hunk of cranberry bread. I would have preferred a healthy serving of fresh fruit instead. We found a Cora (none nearby, unfortunately) and were able to get a more healthy breakfast that way. My husband also visited the bar several times while i was out visiting distant family, and had a good experience.

Our only real complaint were our upstairs neighbors. The floors were evidently made with semi-flimsy material and no soundproofing of any kind. These people would get in late every night (1-3 AM) and proceed to stamp around and make noises like they were rearranging all the furniture in the joint. We actually asked management to call and speak to them, since my husband is a light sleeper, and even with earplugs, he could hear them.

If you're familiar with Calgary at all, something that makes the hotel a bit more remote is that Barlow Trail has now been closed between the hotel and the rest of civilization east of Highway 2 (by the city, evidently and it will stay that way). So you either have to cross the highway going west and then head south that way, or get on 2 and go south. It's a little inconvenient, but the other nice perqs make up for it.

For anyone on Weight Watchers, the free water, free apples, room scale, and weight room make this an ideal hotel to stay at while you're on program. I lost 2 pounds on vacation!

We will definitely be back on our next visit to Calgary.

Rooms are decent. Clean enough and the bathroom is nice. We stay during some hot weather and the room never got below 23 degrees Celsius. When I asked to have the air conditioner fixed they said they would see what they could do but it was like this for both nights. Okay hotel but I wouldn't stat here again.

My coworker and I stayed a few days at the Acclaim for a business trip in early July. Stampede was just starting so the hotel was fairly full during our stay. Overall, we found it to be a decent place to stay for our business trip based on our requirements.

Location
The Acclaim is located about 10 minutes from YYC (~$10-$15 cab ride). The location was great for us as it was near where we needed to be. However, as others have said, it’s in a fairly remote location without a lot of retail, small biz, etc nearby. If not for the attached Italian restaurant, Pacini, we’d probably have to cab it around for about $20 each way to find someplace to eat. One cabbie said it was about $40‘ish to head to downtown.

Room
I stayed in a double queen and enjoyed it. Room was modernly decorated with up to date furnishing. Good space for two people but four would be pushing unless family or spending limited time in the room IMO.

I didn’t utilize the room much other than to sleep and do a bit of work. The bed and pillows were comfortable. The workdesk was a bit small but there was a free wired and wireless Internet access; both with a good connection.

The washroom was also modern with a small tv located in a shelving unit. Little touches such as a shower unit and a toilet seat that doesn’t slam shut.

Other amenities included: a large flatpanel tv with dvd player, clock radio w/ iPod doc, two free bottles of water replenished daily (I really appreciated this), cordless phones, and I think there was a coffee machine. Closet and drawer space was somewhat limited.

Didn’t encounter any problems with the room. It was clean, no temperature issues, no noise issues, etc. The pictures of the rooms on the website are an accurate representation IMO.

Service
Service seemed friendly all around from front desk staff to bumping into housekeeping in the hallway. As mentioned, housekeeping replenished the bottles of water on a daily basis and also replenished the shampoo, conditioner, towels, etc in the washroom as needed.

Miscellaneous
We really didn’t use the public areas that much other than to wait for our cabs. Thought they were fine. There’s free lemonade across from the front desk which is kind of a nice touch.

Didn’t use the pool/hot tub on the top floor. My coworker used the fitness room and said it was extremely small.

The Italian restaurant, Pacini, at the back of the hotel was adequate. It was ok for the odd meal but it’s pretty much standard Italian chain restaurant fare and quality. Prices were reasonable with the bulk of the items under $20. They have a small breakfast buffet (had all the basics like scrambled eggs, eggs bennie, bacon, potatoes, etc) for about $10 or you could order a la carte. Their bread grill, where you pick a type of bread, slather it with a compound butter, and then toss it onto a grill was kind of novel.

Conclusion
Would not have a problem staying here again if I needed to be in the area for a few days max. However, for longer stays, I’d prefer to stay somewhere that had more retail and restaurants in the neighbourhood. It’s also difficult for me to assess if I would stay here for personal travel because of the price (skewed due to Stampede) and location (I would need a reason to say in this remote area).

Room Tip: Take the stairwell at the back of the hotel to go to Pacini's instead of hoofing it back & f...

Just for a quick get-away overnight and to do some biking on the trails in Calgary. Had booked a king bed but got switched to the queen suite. I love the 'green' idea with the key card to keep the lights on. Absolutely love the Keurig coffee in-room in the morning - what a fantastic idea! The shower is a treat. The roof-top hot tubs were excellent - very nicely set up. Just need to enforce the no smoking policy. Dinner in Pacini's was excellent - one previous comment on not enough food but we thought there was plenty for a meal. Also had the breakfast (included w/room) the next morning. Great deal. Excellent spot that you could stay at and do the Calgary touristy things and come back to at night - easy access to Deerfoot and Stony Trail.

Room Tip: Seemed like the bed was bit small for a queen so I would recommend the king

My wife and I stayed one night at the Acclaim in June 2011. If you're flying, you can't beat the location, just minutes from the airport. If you're visiting friends in Calgary or otherwise need to travel around town, it's a little remote. The unfinished parking lot and the lack of much of anything in the immediate area make you feel like you're on the edge of nowhere.

The room was very comfy and had lots of nice touches, like lit mirrors and a small TV in the bathroom. It took a little getting used to the system of inserting your key card to keep the lights on. We liked the contemporary styling of the furniture. The staff were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our very short stay.
