Owner description: Every July, millions of people come to Calgary's Stampede Park to take part in one of the world's largest rodeos and other popular activities such as chuckwagon racing and agricultural shows. The event's origins date back to 1912, when American Guy Weadick, a successful trick roper, got support to host an event called "Stampede" to celebrate the "disappearing" Old West. Since then, the event has grown drastically and has evolved into a celebration of the Old West, while reflecting the modern, multicultural aspects of the city.

I feel almost traitorous to my adopted city for this but.... Its just a super hyped fall fair. Same trashy midway rides, same trashy midway food, same trashy souvenir crap, everything vastly over priced.

I will admit I probably just went to it at the wrong point in life. If your a young adult into getting trashed and partying all day/night Im sure its a blast. Its also probably a lot of fun for people with kids - for a middle aged couple with no kids in tow to ooo and aaah over things its just doesnt have all that much to offer except emptying your wallet.

Basically been there done that at fall fairs all over Ontario in my teens, early twenties - wasnt anything to set it apart other than scale its a bigger fall fair. Worth a visit once.

Although I had been to the Stampede at least a dozen times I attended the rodeo for the first time in July 2013. Ignore the Midway & save your cash for rodeo seats, it's exciting and the participants' enthusiasm is contagious. Don't forget to wear a cowboy hat to keep the sun or rain off your head.

The Stampede is held in the first week or so of July, which for Calgary is pretty much the beginning of summer and runs for 10 days. It can be very hot at this time and they can get some crazy thunderstorms rolling in off the mountains during the afternoon due to the high temps, so bring a poncho, sunscreen and a sweater if your going at night. If you are going to the rodeo events get the best tickets you can afford, rush seating is usually standing room only, still a lot of fun but if you get the seats on the enclosed top area where the sports book is you get menu service with an actual server, plus free water!

There are plenty of carnival type rides, the zipper, Ferris wheel, etc, and lots of food options with full restaurant options available on the grounds, be warned though, the restaurants fill up quickly. Also there is a casino on the grounds if you want to try your hand at Lady Luck. With the beer gardens and concert tents you want to get there early, as early as possible, they can have big line ups all day.

Don't forget to look around town for the free stampede breakfasts and bbqs, most local business's have them and the grocery stores and pubs seem to have the biggest ones, again, go early if you can or be prepared to wait in line. Also, book your hotel reservations and tickets in advance, months if possible, getting any hotel last minute during the Stampede can be hit or miss, even the campgrounds around Calgary are packed.

If you are coming I can promise you a good time, there is something for everyone and the nightlife is on fire during that time. Hope this helps. Also, public transit runs more often and a lot later during stampede since getting a taxi is not really an option unless you have a lot of time on your hands.

The Calgary Stampede has been the "highlight" of the city for a while now but every year I go it seems to be getting worse and worse. It's definitely worth checking out just once a year but any more than the one time will kill your pocket and just not worth it. I personally go for the mini doughnuts.. now THOSE are definitely worth the buzz.

You have not experienced anything till you come to the Calgary Stampede . Lots of great food and so much entertainment and concerts galore. free breakfasts and lunches all over town . The city really puts on a party for the young and the old. Dance away the night in your western duds and meet lots of friendly people.
it is 10 days you need to experience for sure. From the rodeo to the chuck wagon races or the rides at the park..there is something for everyone.
