“Final hotel in Canada”
Reviewed 11 September 2013

Centrally placed for sightseeing. The best bed of the two week tour. Like the green décor in the corridors, most of the hotels had been drab browns. Let us have a late departure at 2.00 without extra charge. Accommodated in the same room although initially one night was made by a tour and the second personally - another hotel would not do this. Pleasant staff, excellent security arrangements. It was a little noisy from the traffic but I slept very well.

Room Tip: Our room on the 5th floor was a little noisy. Possibly higher up might be quieter.

A strange mix of helpful and less helpful staff! Moxies bar was very noisy but one of the staff let us use an attached conference room to meet our friends in. The business trainer then showed us to another room when he needed to use the conference room. This was great service. The bedroom was well furnished and clean. The poor air conditioning let it down. The front desk staff were helpful although one of them broke off talikng to me to speak to a passing colleague. Not very nice!

Room Tip: Check the air conditioning!

We drove to the hotel from Calgary airport. Beware, you cannot use 8th Avenue to approach the hotel, it turns into a pedestrian route at about 3 St SW. You can't use 7th Avenue either as it's a tram/train and bus lane only. So use 6th Av SW, hook a left onto 8th St SW and turn left into the hotel car park ($5 per day).

We were met on reception by very friendly staff, and having cheekily asked for an upgrade, we were given a king double in place of our twin. The hotel is located in the business district of Calgary, and be warned, on a Sunday evening the surrounding area is fairly deserted with most bars/restaurants that we could find, closed. So we opted for the grill, Moxie's, attached to the hotel. We had burgers and a couple of beers each for £16 per head.

The room was quiet, clean, spacious enough for our needs. The bathroom was a little small. But we were only staying here one night.

Overall a pleasant one night start to our holiday.

We stayed here on the first night of what was to be a two week road trip to Vancouver, unfortunately one of our cases had been lost at the Airport and so by the time we arrived at the Sandman (one case light) we weren't exactly in the holiday mood. This all changed however due to the excellent man who checked us in. I can't speak highly enough of the man, he should have his own TV show. He was enthusiastic in recommending places for us to visit and eat, and following an excellent evening meal (as suggested) we were greeted by an the same man excited to tell us that my case was now safely waiting for me in the room.

The rooms are to a decent standard and very clean. The location is excellent for exploring downtown Calgary and only a few minutes walk from the Bow River.

The quality of service really set this hotel aside from being an average downtown hotel to an excellent one.

We found the hotel to be clean, reasonably priced and really close to the Calgary LRT station which connected us to almost everywhere we wanted to go in Calgary. The staff were pleasant, the room was nice a large plenty of drawer spaces and spot for hanging stuff, the bathroom was a little small (but it's not like you spend any quality time in there anyway) and the restaurant served some tasty food.

We were there at Stampede time and there was a tourist info table staffed by some very nice people who answered all our questions and sorted us with maps, vouchers and the like.

The pool in the spa was a little chilly but the hot tub was super hot and more than made up for it. There seemed to be a decent selection of workout equipment to choose from (but I was on holiday and not likely to use it!).

Across the road was a drug store with a post office, a Tim Hortons for those early morning Tim Bits and a Macs in case you'd forgotten anything.

Centrally located, clean, reasonably priced, and within easy teach of quality restaurants (and a Tim Hortons!)...not perhaps Calgary's finest hotel, but a very good compromise. The bathroom was particularily good. Would I stay there again? Yes!
