“Great Stay”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

Amazing breakfast, the beds were a bit too firm for my liking however the rooms themselves were fantastic. Although small, everything was equipped very intelligently for the space. A lot of the people who work in the hotel are hospitality students so they WANT to make your experience top-notch. There were incredibly helpful and accommodating.

I booked the hotel through hotels.com. The cost was $106 for a two bedroom suite. Seemed like a great deal. I was then charged $20 for an extra person....there was 4 of us. The fourth person in a two beadroom suite does not seem like an extra person...but......When I arrived I was charged $10 for parking....and did not receive the complementary breakfast. That was not part of the price....for our room...but was for others...
In total the room was $106+$20+10+tax= 152 ish. If you include the $12.50 per person for the breakfast we thought was included the total exceeds $200 /night.
In fairness the fine print may have indicated all of the above. This was far from explicit or clear however. Nice enough place but definitely misleading pricing.

Hello Darwin R,

We appreciate you taking the time to review your stay at Hotel Alma.

We offer our Two bedroom student apartments during the summer months as a more economical option for guests travelling to the area. All rates at the hotel are based on double occupancy and we apologize if this was not clear on the booking site you used.

The complimentary breakfast is not included for guests who book the discounted apartments as this allows us to offer lower rates. Should you wish to have the breakfast and require accommodation for up to 4 people we would suggest looking at our One Bedroom suites. These rooms have a king sized bed as well as a queen sofa bed. They can comfortably sleep 4 guests and comes with all of the regular hotel amenities.

We hope to see you again soon in one of our traditional Hotel rooms,

Team Alma

We stayed two nights as a family with 3 suites. The rooms were very clean and comfortable. The service was friendly and efficient. The price was very reasonable. I booked the rooms through hotwire.com and was a bit skeptical when I realized that the hotel was affiliated with the university. I was pleasantly surprised! The complimentary breakfast was awesome with fruit, bread, pastry, eggs, yogurt, and cereals.

I've read all of the reviews about how "european" (read: small) the standard rooms are, how impractical (not to mention pretentious) the designer sink is, and how you can hear every noise through the door... all true. It is what it is, but for a short stay in this area of the city, it does the job.

With this hotel being easily found using those "mystery hotel mucho percentage off" deals, I can't gripe about value (my rating would change if I actually paid full price). The free wi-fi, free phone calls (throughout Canada and most parts of the US), large mini fridge and microwave actually represent high end amenities. That said, if you book via the discounted route, you probably won't have much leeway to upgrade to a one-bedroom suite if the standard room leaves you claustrophobic.

My feedback here is for the lack of (good) communication regarding parking. I knew coming in that I would have to ante up for the parking, but during check-in, I had to ask where the parking lot was and no other information was offered that I should NOT actually pay for parking IN THE LOT.

When we returned to the hotel much later that evening, all of the parking spots normally assigned to the hotel were taken up (it was convocation week). We parked in an adjacent area and - not wanting to be ticketed - paid $7 for "no overnight parking". Back at the hotel lobby, I indicated this to the front desk clerk. It was at this point that we were told that we didn't need to pay at the meter for parking. (Not sure how this would have covered our specific situation when the hotel's spaces were all occupied, but good to know for our next night.) In any case, the staff member indicated that she would make a note on our file so that our $7 could be credited back to us at checkout time.

Guess what happened at check-out time? The person on duty then could not find any note about our first day's parking challenge. Luckily I had the receipt for the $7 parking charge. But after I explained what our situation had been, this staff member started to say, "You should have -" Really? A customer raises an issue about something that happened two nights ago and your first response is to tell him/her what s/he should have done?

Anyway, for those interested in the actual process for how paid parking works at the Hotel Alma, here are the details. The spots allocated to hotel guests are clearly marked. Park in one of those spaces and DO NOT PAY at the meter. This means that the little light in the "ceiling" above your vehicle will be lit up with a red indicator; this is apparently fine in this section of the parkade.) When you check out - given that you would have indicated at check-in that you have a vehicle and would be needing parking - you will be charged $10 per night for parking.

As to what you should do if all of the hotel's parking spots are occupied, well, maybe management can tell us so that it can be clear to everyone from now on.

Hello Boromach,

We appreciate you reviewing your recent stay with us at Hotel Alma.

We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and found our rooms to be comfortable. We are proud to offer complimentary Wi-Fi, local and long distance calling within Canada and the continental US as well as a continental breakfast and are happy to hear that you enjoyed these upgraded amenities.

We apologize that there was miscommunication regarding our guest parking during your stay. We offer overnight guest parking and take care of everything for our guests right at the front desk. We do have reserved parking stalls for our guests, however if they are full, as they were during your stay, guests are asked to park in nearby stalls to this area and inform the front desk.

We do have One bedroom suites which are a larger room for guests looking for something different than our traditional Euro style rooms. When available, these rooms are offered to any guest for an upgrade fee no matter how the reservation was made. As we have a limited number of suites we suggest booking them ahead of time to guarantee the suite as they do book up quickly.

We hope to see you again on your next visit to Calgary,

Team Alma

Only stayed overnight while travelling through Canada with our son. We booked the 2 bedroom apartment but were very disappointed with the apartment. Very small and the beds, raised high from the floor over draw sets were very uncomfortable. The mattress' were covered with plastic, small and fell to the middle. The rooms were clinical and had too many pieces of furniture. Although basic it was clean and quite.

Room Tip: The hotel is situated in the Calgary University grounds, loud youth were in the car park until late...

Hello Lisa C,

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your stay with us at Hotel Alma.

Our Two bedroom student apartments are offered during the summer months as an economical option for our guests. These rooms are not for everyone and we do suggest booking our Hotel rooms for your next visit as you will find their traditional mattresses more comfortable.

Our One bedroom suites would be a option for your family of three as they offer a king sized bed as well as a queen sofa bed.

We hope to see you back again soon,
