“Pretty good for mall food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 November 2013

We had some tempura vegetables and shrimp with a few pieces of salmon sushi and pork dumplings. All was good. I especially like the tempura batter, light and crisp. The vegetables very depending what is in the kitchen. This time there were some potatoes which they could not have bothered with. They are just not meant to be served tempura style. The service, we were seated promptly but the wait staff I would call indifferent. Again for mall food it was pretty good. The map does not have it in the right location, should be Sunridge Mall.

“Good food but some improvements can be made”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 January 2013

I've been here quite a few times already because I can't get enough of the egg drop soup that comes with the meals. I can't say that their food is the best but it's definitely somewhere I would consider when I'm out and hungry. They have a lovely atmosphere and the service is mediocre. You would have those servers that are really welcoming while there are those who just give you that "poker face".

They seem to only have one kind of dressing which I believe is the Thousand Island one for their side salads but that's not the issue. If they only have one kind of dressing, the least they could do is to ask their customer if the dressing is okay but they don't bother to. They just throw it on there assuming that you're fine with it. Thousand Island is my actually my favorite dressing but not everyone shares the same taste buds. If you're considering visiting this place and ordering salad, just take this into mind.

“Fresh Japanese Food at a Reasonable Price”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 October 2012

I recently had a business lunch at Sumo Grill and was quite pleased with the food. The service could have been more coordinated (the two meals were delivered 5 minutes apart), but I was happy with the food freshness of the food and overall presentation.

“No better than supermarket sushi”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 September 2012

Mediocre sushi and odd service. One maki roll arrived before the appetizer, the other 40 minutes later. Not really any better than food court food but pricier.

“Decent Japanese lunch spot in Calgary”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2012

There are a number of very good restaurants in Calgary, so I would not choose Sumo for an evening of fine dining, but as a lunch spot it is pretty good. I much prefer Soba or Ramen noodles rather than Udon, but unfortunately that is all that is available in their broth. The spice chicken Udon is a filling meal in itself, but combine it with some tempura prawns, and the combination just works. The prawns are a decent size and not small shrimp disguising themselves as prawns, and the batter is pretty good. The Udon noodles are properly cooked, and when they say spicy they are correct. I usually go for the chili pepper immediately, so the heat was a pleasant surprise.
