The hotel is on the edge of one of the sketchier parts of town but I give the desk clerk credit for telling me the truth (after I had checked in, of course!) You're just a block away from the free light rail line down 7th Ave SW, so it's not all bad. There's a free continental breakfast for those who absolutely need their morning coffee and roll fix. The coffee maker in your room is good enough for most people I'm sure. BTW, there is no restaurant, just an eating area off the main lobby - unless vending machine "food" quaifies as food in your house. Don't count on any scenic views of the Rockies. You get a real good look at urban blight though. At $219 a night, it's pricey...but so is everything in this town.

We were able to stay at the Holiday Inn Express during the last weekend of the Calgary Stampede at a good rate from Hotwire. We contacted the manager requesting a quiet room and were placed in a corner of the building on the top floor, which was great. When we arrived, the gentleman at the front desk was very friendly and gave a thorough overview of the hotel and of the activities related to the Stampede. Our room was comfortable. While it smelled a little smoky, the smell cleared after we left the patio door open for a while. Aside from this, the room was clean, but the halls were dingy--especially the hall in the basement between the elevator and parking garage. The hotel is conveniently located in the free zone of the trolly system, and there is a stop just behind the building. The breakfast was standard for a Holiday Inn Express. Given the price and location, I would definitely consider staying here again.

We stayed at this hotel July 3-5 while my husband was in Calgary on business. This is an older hotel which has been bought out by Holiday Inn. It is in a convenient location within walking distance of downtown Calgary and the Bow river recreation area. We had a room on the 9th floor overlooking south Calgary, and the railway lines. The balcony doors are original to the building, and we found them sadly lacking in soundproofing ability. We heard every noise throughout the night. Our room was small, but it had been recently re-decorated, and there was a fridge and microwave in the room as well as coffee/tea making facilities. The bed was comfortable, although a little firm for our liking. There were a few minor issues with the room, one being the windows were filthy, inside with fingerprints and outside with street grime. The free wi-fi kept cutting in and out, and it always seemed to disconnect whenever we would hit “send” on an e-mail. It was very frustrating. Although the room was very clean, we found the hallways needed a good vacuuming. There was lint and dust everywhere, which really showed up on the black carpet. The lobby and breakfast area were spotless.

The included breakfast was more than sufficient. It included eggs, bacon, pancakes, yogurt, fruit, pastries, cereal and toast. We were quite pleased with it.

A word of caution if you use the indoor parking garage, when you exit the garage, the ramp is very steep. We scraped the bottom of our rental car every time. We tried to approach it from different angles, but it didn’t seem to make any difference. Luckily, there was no visible damage, but something really should be done to try and smooth it out a bit.

All in all, this is not a bad little hotel. The convenience of location is what would make us consider staying again. Although we found it a little pricey (due to the fact that the Stampede was starting later that week), I feel confident in recommending it.

This hotel is good for a short-term business traveler.

1) Room
Clean & cosy
Towels are refreshed everyday
No door in a closet despite smorking room

2) Service
Just in businesslike manner
No special impression

3) Breakfast
Very poor for me comparing with the other hotels in Calgary

4) Location
Irish pub, live houses, entertainment, Korean restaurants are within walking distance

Nice, clean rooms, we had read other reviews that said the rooms at the front of the hotel were noisy but we didn't experience this. There is a free tram service that runs down 7th Avenue and the station is parallel to the hotel. Our stay also included free parking and free breakfast which was a nice touch.

This hotel pleased us very much and we will stay here again when we visit Calgary. The room was large and very comfortable. Included were a fridge and a microwave. The bed was comfortable and the hotel was quiet. It is located very close to the end of the line for the downtown free train. This was really convenient for shopping downtown.

The free secured parking and the free breakfast make this hotel a winner.

Desk staff were extremely friendly and helpful.

The hotel is comfortable and clean. The staff were excellent and very friendly. BUT ...

our room faced was at the front of the hotel which is next to a bar which has live bands. No problem with this (I like live music) but at 1.00 in the morning, although you can't hear the music, the smokers meet outside on the street and talk loudly. Very orderly and no problems but the noise kept us awake. The hotel wasn't full - I wonder if there were quieter rooms at the back?

Also, for the standard of room, the costs were quite high ($251) which is over twice what we'd paid the night before for a nicer room and car parking.
