“Overpriced”
Reviewed 12 September 2011

We were impressed with the "old world charm' when we first walked in. The staff was helpful and friendly. We were with a group of six and only one room was available. When we were finally led to our room, we realized that a freight train was running past our windows. We asked if it ran all day and they admitted that it was used 24 hours a day. The room was nice but we asked for a change. The only one left was a room with two beds instead of the king bed we had reserved. The furniture is no longer charming but dated. The linens were lovely, but the hotel had a drab feeling to it. Since it has no view, I think other travelers would do just as well at a new, more updated hotel in the area.

Location is difficult to negotiate due to traffic patterns and area construction.
The area is convenient to downtown...but not as good as the Westin or Marriott.
Palliser 5th floor Jr Suite next to elevator was awful...terrible bathroom designs..no space to move in the closet sized bathroom. The view of the railrood tracks and the graffiti on the back wall of the opposing building across the tracks was an added insult to a high priced room!

This hotel is bizarre. There is no concierge; the bell desk personnel try to "help" by looking things up on the web and they give extremely inaccurate information. For example, they assured us that Heritage Village had no entrance fee, when the fee was actually almost $40 for the two of us. There is no small store in which to buy sundries; you guessed it--the bell desk personnelalso handle this duty and will sell you monogrammed Fairmont products only. The service in the restaurant and bar is extremely slow, but no explanations or apologies are ever given. In the bar, the waitress held my sandwich for 45 minutes without giving it to me because she assumed, without asking, that I wouldn't want to receive it until the person with me had finished both her appetiser and salad. Many of the rooms have not been renovated for decades. One room we were taken to had a broken-down mattress and stained, mildew-smelling bathroom. This hotel is like no other Fairmont I have ever stayed in.

I was very disappointed to learn of the experiences you encountered during your stay and appreciate you taking the time to bring these matters to our attention. I've stayed at the Palliser on several business trips over the past several months and have always had a pleasant stay. It's very close to most of the companies and a reasonable walking distance to the main tourist sites.
The rooms are a decent size and feature a very comfortable bed with nice linens (none of that usual "hotel smell"). It is an older hotel, so you have to expect some grubbiness but it never had a feeling of not being clean.
One of my biggest complaints is about the breakfast -- it is very expensive and not quite up to par. The buffet selections were missing some basic items that I depend on. Usually I opt to walk to one of the nearby coffee shops.
The Oval Room lounge is a wonderful spot to unwind at the end of the day. You can settle in there with a book or newspaper and not feel rushed. Some of the non-alcoholic drinks are outstanding (i.e. the lemon basil soul cleanser!). The menu is a bit odd, but there are plenty of choices for a light meal.
Overall, I fully intend to keep returning to the Palliser every time I'm in Calgary

We had another wonderful stay at the Palliser whilst visiting family in Calgary. We requested a remodelled room and were not disappointed. As one of us have several health issues, this room exceeded our expectations as to decor, quietness, and cleanliness. Staff were fantastic as we have already witnessed first hand from our previous stays here - if you need something room service is quick to deliver the item you requested. Everyone is always very friendly and helpful. Our favorite person Ophelia who works in the Oak Room Lounge was a delight as always - a very special person in our hearts. If we do not see "Opie" on one of our stays we are sorely disappointed - what a great ambassador for the hotel! The breakfast buffet in the Rimrock Room is always delicious with a great selection of food choices. I guess it was a bit busy the time that we were there or there were less personnel on duty that weekend but we found the valet service to be slow in getting some help with our luggage from our car. In the past they have been incredibly quick to open the car doors for us and get the luggage out and in the lobby. Looking forward to our next visit at Christmas!!

The Staff were excellent, and the lobby was beautiful, however, room was huge, but bathroom so small couldn't turn around in it. No dresser in the room, clothes had to go on shelf in closet. If you are under 6' tall, you won't reach the shelf. Internet connection was so big couldn't plug the power in to my laptop at the same time. TV had volume control limits, so couldn't hear the TV. Trains going by room at all hours. Shower controls were backwards, hot was labeled cold, cold was labeled hot. Elevators unreliable, 10 people trapped for 2.5 hrs one night and emergency phone did not work. Food was excellent, however, $23 for Bacon and Eggs. $7 for Bottle of Water, $19 for Hamburger. Parking $37 a night. If you are in a wheelchair, you either get lifted up by the staff to go up the stairs, or travel from the parkade via a number of hallways for a few hundred yards to get to lobby. Not a nice part of town, lots of "street people" in area. This hotel is not worth the money......
