“Old world charm meets modern luxury”
Reviewed 23 April 2012

This hotel is rich in history. Walking into the lobby is like walking back in time. The design and architecture are stunning.

Something to be aware of however - not all rooms have been redone. I had a room on the 6th floor which had been updated and was spectacular - king size bed, tassimo, new bathroom, the works. Very nice indeed. My colleague on the other hand was staying on the 9th floor and it looked like a room from yesteryear - red rug, dated bathroom, regular coffee maker, queen bed. We both were paying $349 per night yet our yet the quality of our rooms differed immensely.

You may also want to visit restaurants and bars offsite. Coffee is $5.00, a Cosmopolitan is $18.00. An yogurt and granola parfait with a piece of banana bread is $16.00. Very pricey all around.

The location of this hotel, coupled with it's historic charm make it a very good place to stay. Just make sure you don't get a room on the 9th floor and you have deep pockets.

In April 2010 we stayed at the Fairmont Hotel Calgary. At about 9:30pm the fire alarms went off. We looked out our window to see three fire trucks parked in front of the hotel. We proceeded to the stairs along with lots of others evacuating the hotel, after a couple of flights the stairs became an outside metal staircase, ending in an alley. There was no staff member at the bottom of the stairs to help or direct clients. I saw people barefoot in hotel robes carrying children, who were upset and unsure what to do.
We managed to find our way to the front of the hotel and huddled around. At no time did a staff member come out to assist. The hotel staff stayed inside behind the hotel front desk. When we were finally cleared to enter the hotel, no one came up to ask how we were doing or offer assistance. Even on check out the whole incident was not acknowledged. I wrote a letter
to their head office and was blown off. No have not been overly impressed with this hotel.

I love the old CP Hotels as they definitely have character. The Paliser is in a great location downtown and the rooms are very comfortable. The bed and pillows were great - the roo and especially the bathroom is small but typical of the old hotels and adds to the charm of the room. We had a late supper in the lounge downstairs and it was great. The food & service was good, the place was really busy. We would stay here again.

We arrived straight from the slopes in Sunshine Village, more or less looking like ski bums, but the welcome was warm and accommodating nevertheless. Our well traveled teens actually dropped their jaws, and was impressed with the old stylish ambience. Service, attitude and Canadian hospitality was "all over the place".

The bar was a pleasant place to finish of the day, half of our group tried the expensive, famous Sunday brunch and claimed it was worth every penny. The location worked fine for our short two nights stay - close to the pedestrian area of the city and adjacent to Calgary Tower (worth a visit, especially on a bright day and if you choose to do your lunch there), and with easy access to the airport as well.

Calgary as a city didn't really trigger us, but we will probably be skiing the rockies again and this hotel will certainly be on top of our list if we find it convienent to tie the trip together with a night or two for our flight from/back to Norway. Also, we understand that we should visit during The Stampede, and the location of this hotel for this event seems to be very good for this event. If you are destined for Calgary, please try this hotel.

I arrived very late on March 18 after delayed flights from Vancouver. I self parked the car and entered the hotel through the convention centre. I was greeted by very helpful and friendly front desk staff. I was delighted to have a larger room overlooking the railway. Yes, this is a railway hotel, so it's just a given. The room was turned down and soft music was playing in the background. My stay was short and sweet, but very comfortable in typical Fairmont fashion. I hit the sheets at about 1 am and was out again at 900 for a meeting in the hotel lobby. Short and sweet.

I understand this is a very old hotel, so some of it's limitations are just a given based on the sheer age of the building. Here are some of my thoughts...
Parking
I self parked the car. Expect a long walk to the hotel from the parkade if this is what you choose. I parked until approximately 130 pm and the cost was $27.00. I would choose to valet park in the future. Easier coming and going and you do not have to schlep your luggage through the office tower and convention centre.
Hotel Lobby
Beautiful lobby filled with rich decor. Front desk staff were great at both check in and check out. Plenty of bellmen to assist with your luggage.
Guest Room
The room had lovely rich traditional decor. The bed was made up without feathers as I have requested in my profile. I am a Fairmont President's Club member, and my Fairmont Fit acitivity wear was set up waiting for me on arrival.
The bathroom was very small and it looked as though the tub had been fit with a newer tub in recent years. I could feel a bit of give in the tub as I showered. Bathroom was very clean. New amenities in the bathroom seemed to suit fairmont a bit better than what I have seen for the past several years. I can't remember the new brand of toiletries.
Coffee maker in the room - great little gizmo with pods from Timothy's. Just perfect for making that one cup directly into your cup. Room also stocked with yummy fairmont teas, and a mini bar with snacks and assorted beverages for sale.
Morning newspaper - I received both the local and national papers.

I did not get a chance to eat in the hotel this go around. It was so busy and crazy for me - just in and out. Overall a great spot at the right price.

It had been ten years since my last stay at the Palliser. Not much has changed. How lovely. The beauty of a historic property situated in the heart of the city remains. One night in between an international flight was all this time but I had a gorgeous suite with lots of light, space and delightfully comfortable bed. Ahhhh...

Breakfast the next morning at the buffet was adequate but not great. Food could have been hotter and fresher.

Service at the Palliser is top notch though. Thoughtful, helpful folk everywhere.

I'll be back.

Room Tip: The extra space in a suite makes the experience all that more grand. Rooms are beautifully appointed...
