I saw a demonstration of a Segway a few years ago and knew immediately I wanted to try it so when a Groupon coupon showed up in my inbox for a Segway tour on the Saskatchewan River in Edmonton Alberta I jumped at it. And before I knew it my husband and I were jumping on the Segways and enjoying the view. Owner Chris and his assistant Veronica gave us a quick but perfect training session and then led us along a paved trail. Chris stopped now and then to point out the sights and explain what we were looking at - like the hand carved lions from China and the Magpie nest high in a tree. We were thrilled to get our Segway licences at the end of the tour and will definitely go back for a longer tour. BTW, Chris also rents bicycles and runs the only cafe along the trails so you can stop for a snack and a drink as well. Highly recommended.

We decided to buy 2 groupons to use for a 1 hour segway in the river valley experience. Both my husband and I weren't sure what to expect. Our experience exceeded our expecations! Our guide Pete was fantastic. Very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Pete was incredibly helpful at teaching the basics of how to manouvre the segway and we were on our way after practising a few skills. Pete was wonderful as he would stop at various photo locations and asked if he would like a few photos there, so he would take pics with our camera. We explored Louise McKinney Park which we had never been to before. You have the option of buying an extra 30 minutes on the segway for $25 if you are keen to keep going past the hour. The scenery was really pretty and it was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon. Thanks to Pete for a great experience! We can't wait to go again in the fall when the leaves are changing colours.

It was a beautiful late summer day when 6 of us, the fact that we are all seniors makes no difference to this experience, arrived at Louise Mckinney Park in Edmonton's lovely river valley. The parking area is at the top of a hill so once parked we walked down to the start point where there is a cafe, the office of River Valley Adventure Company and a city-maintained building with public washrooms. Chris, our guide and Segway expert met us. We were shown a video - it's unnecessarily scary. With helmets on we assembled outside across from The River Queen tourist boat. There were walkers with dogs, runners and in-line skaters on the trail. Chris took us through the stages of geting onto a Segway, standing properly, turning, moving forward and backwards as well as stopping. He worked with each of us in turn until we felt basically comfortable with the way the machine worked. It only took a few minutes and we were all eager to proceed. The first part of the trip is uphill - WOW ! - on a Segway you just lean forward and with no effort you are headed up.............. It's really fun! Once at the top we all stopped so we'd stay together. Chris led us through the Japanese garden as he explained the meanings of various things there, over to the Shumka stage where Ukrainian dancing and other performances are held, through a rose garden with it's exotic smells and then back along some paths to the edge of the North Saskatchewan River. We had booked the 1 hour tour but you are allowed to lengthen that by a half-hour at this point - if you do you are taken across a bridge and along another riverside trail. Time would not allow us to do that this time but it would have been a great addition to the day. We sped back along a sloping trail to the cafe to turn our Segways back in and have coffee. Chris was great - he instilled confidence in us while at the same time ensuring we understood how to operate the Segways capably. the whole experience was exciting and fun. At the end we each received a 'licence' so if we return we'd have longer on the paths as we wouldn't have to redo the training session. This would be a really enjoyable experience for a family group or small office group to enjoy together. It's unique, not difficult and just a load of fun !
