“A hip, unique, boutique, retreat!”
Reviewed 22 September 2013

Was lucky to get a great rate through Expedia this weekend on my way through Edmonton. A fantastic choice you won't regret. Stayed in an "Earth Room", elegantly appointed, super clean, bathrobes, little special extras, worth every penny. Stunning washroom, super comfortable bed. Everything you read about the breakfast included is true. Much more than a "continental" breakfast, you'll leave the table full and satisfied. Whyte Ave is a hip, funky strip with lots of unique shops. But know this, it is a great social gathering spot. Nightclubs mean that if you face the street you'll know it. You are staying in this area of the experience! But the back rooms are quiet. Yes, there are ear plugs. Personally I travel with a white noise machine even when the hotel is quiet.
The staff is stellar. Thanks to Kevin, the bellman for the great conversation. Valet parking is included. A top-notch front line staff. Great fitness room. Like a spa retreat stay at the Metterra! Don't miss it.

Room Tip: upper floor facing back are quietest

I stayed here recently for 5 nights and chose the hotel based on the good reviews in Tripadvisor and its close proximity to the University.
Upon arrival on the Friday night around 8pm I couldn't find a spot out front for the valet parking.I drove to the surface carpark and it was full so I tried a second time at the hotel and on this occasion was able to get parked.
Checkin took about 10 minutes which the front desk staff apologised for and were given a room on the sixth floor facing the front of Whyte. The room itself was very nice and had a large tv, a fridge/minibar and a Keurig coffee maker. The shower in the bathroom was big and I was well pleased with the room overall. One thing that did catch my eye were earplugs beside the bed and at this stage I was wondering how much sleep I would get. As it turned out I didn't sleep very well. It wasn't the bed which was uncomfortable but the noise outside. Motorcycles, music and the people who thronged Whtye Avenue until about 3am ensured my first night's sleep wasn't a good one and made me doubt the wisdom of choosing this hotel. What I didn't know coming from the UK was this was the last weekend of the Fringe festival which was quite close to the hotel so a busy area became ultra busy hence the noise. I'll come back to the location later as things did improve.
The rest of the hotel was very good. The mezzanine level where both breakfast and a wine tasting hour in the evening was held was really nice with nice decor and seating. It was also possible to sit out on a balcony area which was pleasant because of nice sunny weather and there was also a coffee maker which could be accessed any time of day. Breakfast was good with a good selection of food and all in all the hotel was excellent.
The first two nights were noisy but after that it was ok to a tolerable level. One of the problems with Whyte is that it is such a busy location it lends itself to noise. However one of the benefits is the good variety of restaurants nearby with a mexican restaurant beside the hotel and an Italian and steakhouse within 100m of the front door. There are also numerous small shops, coffee houses and bars nearby so although Whyte is busy and hence noisy at night , especially at the weekend, there is the benefit of having so much on your doorstep.
The test of a hotel is whether you would go back and my answer is yes. I hope to return to Edmonton within the next 4 months and I will be staying here again. Just be aware of the noise factor in deciding upon this hotel but the hotel itself is very good.

We came up to Edmonton from Calgary for business/one night. We chose the Meterra based on the great reviews via trip advisor.
When we arrived we were given a wrong room (2 double beds vs a king). After returning to the desk eventually we were given a new room with a king.
After the event we returned to UNREAL noise in our room with earplugs by our bed 'say no to whyte noise'. Too bad even ear plugs couldn't remedy the motorbike volume.
Keep in mind we are young (30s) but we weren't going to be sleeping that night: so we left. At 1230am. When we did we were told: you should have asked for a quiet room. Didn't know that had to be said. Out loud.
While we waited for our car we finally read the bad reviews: FYI you also need to ask for secure parking?
Great place perhaps...on a Monday night?

Dawn L, General Manager at Metterra Hotel on Whyte, responded to this review, 8 January 2014
Dear Sheenakc,

Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry to hear about the noise from the street. As much as we love how "lively" Whyte Ave can be it's not always restful when your room is facing the action. We have brought the noise issue caused by motorcycles up with Edmonton Police Services and they subsequently set up an inspection stop and issued several fines for noise violations. They will be conducting these inspections again when the motorcycles come out in the Spring in order to maintain normal metropolitan conditions

We have a couple of options for parking at our hotel with both valet and self-serve services. We are sorry you were not directed to the appropriate lot.

Your feedback is incredibly important to us as it helps us manage our services and provide the best experience for our guests. Please contact me directly if you wish to discuss the issue further or if we can help restore your faith in us.

Sincerely,

Dawn Li

Stayed here one night to meet friends on Whyte ave for dinner. This hotel is beautiful and the staff are amazing. The king "water" room is huge and spacious- I had an awesome view of the avenue and it was still warm enough to leave the balcony door open to let a breeze in. Only complaint is that the soaking tub was showing signs of age but at least it was clean.

My husband and I spent 4 nights in an air studio. It faced the back and was amazingly quiet. We were on the second floor, which made it very convenient to go to breakfast and the lobby without going on the elevator. The bed was very comfortable and great coffee maker. The location is perfect.

Room Tip: Second floor facing the back.

Arrived in Edmonton on a very warm and sunny afternoon so it was crazy on Whyte Ave. We wondered about our choice of hotel on such a busy street, but other than not being able to get a parking spot outside for the valet it was great. The room was very nice, clean and really quiet despite the crowds on Whyte. Because we were there on a Sunday we didn't get the wine but breakfast was great. Service was excellent. Would definitely stay there again!

I stay at the Metterra often for work and never tire of its outstanding service, location, trendy rooms and nightly wine and cheese! The breakfast is very good and has everything you could want. Valet parking is very handy (just remember to give them about 30 mins notice when you want your car). My home away from home!
