Everything in this restaurant is old and worn: the decoration, the carpet, the chairs. Ignore all that and go for the food. We have been coming here for decades, and are never disappointed in the food. It is our favorite place for large group celebrations.
We almost always start with the deep fried squid; nobody makes it better. Winter melon soup, fish maw soup, salt & pepper chicken, crispy roasted chicken, stuffed tofu, sweet & sour pork (no big chunks of fat like other restaurants). I know that egg foo yung is not traditional Chinese food, but the Sai Woo Special is worth a try.
At the end of the meal they will usually give you sliced oranges, dessert choices are limited. If you really want dessert, go across the street to the bakery.
If it is not too busy, you may see an old Chinese tradition at the end of your meal. We have had 13 people at one table; when we were finished the waiter came and stacked all of the serving dishes, plates, bowls, chopsticks, etc. He then carried it away all in one go. Amazing!

I wanted to try 'authentic' Chinese food. My friend recommend this place. The food was authentic. Fresh fish, you see them catch it out of the tank (lobster too). The sweet & sour soup I LOVED. The rest was ok. Service was only ok too. At 1st it was good , but at the end we waited over 1/2 hour for the man to take our finished, piled up plates. I was looking forward to an authentic dessert but they don't offer any. We did get cut up oranges at the end.

For over 25 years our family has been dining with this restaurant and previous restaurants run by the same establishment, and although we have eaten Chinese food all over the world, we have never found another restaurant with the same quality of sauces and food as Sai Woo and we always look forward to another dinner celebration there. Our favourites: salt and pepper squid (light crunchy batter), steamed garlic shrimp, "i-jap-oi" mixed meat chow mein, honey garlic pork chop, stufffed green peppers and dofu, black bean crab. For extra special occasions, pre-order war shu gai, a special flattened chicken on a bed of mined pork and chinese dried sausage (lap cheong) with crunchy noodles and shrimp chips!

Sai Woo may have excellent food, sure, but after reading the results of their restaurant inspections on the Alberta Health Services website, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Instances range from cockroach infestations to raw sewage dripping on the food. Anyone interested can check for themselves by looking up "Alberta Health Services restaurant inspections" on the internet.

Saiwoo (Gardens) ranks among the best in Edmonton , if you are looking for Cantonese style food at reasonable prices. Their fried calamari is legendary. You can get authentic food if you ignore the first few pages of the "chicken balls" menu. It is only open for dinner but open late. Crowded on Sundays between 6 and 8:30 pm.
