“Dark, dank, depressing”
Reviewed 18 August 2014

I would not stay at Jasper House Bungalows.

Our duplex cabin was furnished with old, dated furniture. Everything was dark and suffocating. It was very warm the days we stayed here, and the cabin became sweltering. The windows were very small and even after being left open all night, the cabin remained stuffy. We found ourselves extending our activities elsewhere just to avoid coming back to such a downer of a room.

Also, the cleaning staff were dismissive and rudely loud in the morning. Slamming of doors, loud conversations, slovenly appearance, they gave the impression of a bunch of kids with no supervision. I gave them a cheery "hello" every time I passed them, just to ruin their day by demanding some sort of acknowledgement.

Recently we sent 2 nights at this motel. It is located 2 miles out of town on a beautiful glacier fed river. It is a series of cabins. Our room had 2 double beds and a flat screen tv. We travelled with 6 other couples and their rooms did not have flat screens. Each room also had a refrigerator which was convenient for storing snacks and drinks. The rooms are not air conditioned but do have small fans. Our room had a bath tub but not all rooms did. In addition wifi was available at no charge. Our room was clean and comfortable.

The motel also had a restaurant were we ate both evenings. It was very good.

The best park of the experience was the relaxed pace. Since we did not have transportation to town, we enjoyed sitting outside talking and enjoying nature. The best part was the morning and evening visits from the elk. They were not tame so we respected their space but we got to watch these magnificent animals.

If you are going to be outside, you must have mosquito repellent.

If you are looking for a mom and pop place in a beautiful setting, this is the place for you .

We were guests of JH the beginning of July, staying in room 48, and our friends in #47. The four of us enjoyed our rooms, service, grounds, and amenities. The setting is beautiful! One reviewer said, "How long can you look at a river?". I wonder, why that person chose to visit the National Park, and lodging right on the Athabasca River. After spending the day in the town of Jasper, I wondered just how quiet any motel/hotel downtown would have been, the majority are either ON the main hwy, or a block or two away from the highway AND the train station!!! Guess one could try to enjoy the sound of trains passing through if one stayed downtown.

We had everything we needed in the room, and bath, plus a fridge. We did not stay in a kitchenette. No furniture was worn or threadbare. It was spotlessly clean. It was cabin decor, knotty pine floor to ceiling, with carpets. I really enjoyed our little table in front of the window looking out across the lawns.

One day temps were in the low 80s but with the bathroom and front windows open, we experienced comfortable cross breezes, and did not use the provided fan. Yes, there was no AC. There were Adirondack chairs, and picnic tables which we enjoyed on the grounds for our own "happy hours" and snacks. The river path, view, and scattered benches overlooking the river allowed some solitude for enjoying the scene, morning and evening. Wish we had seen some animals on the site, too. It was a perfect location for camera enthusiasts! We took sunset photos, and mountain alpenglow pics near the driveway, and down at the river morning and evening.

The meals in the restaurant were good, to very good. Best internet signal was not in the room, but on the bench outside the office. And BTW, I think travelers find all meals and lodging throughout the Parks areas are more costly than what they normally experience at "home" - - even for a burger. A burger at The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel cost me $18 or $19. We found THAT every where we traveled in Alberta. Rooms were far more expensive for something "spartan" throughout Yellowstone National Park, WY. And, I believe, the rooms at Chateau Lake Louise, or other Fairmont Hotels, would be three to four times the prices, for a parking lot view. A boxed sandwich or salad in the deli at CLL cost $12-$15. A bowl of soup at the Glacier was about $10 I think.

TIP: Free wi-fi, and strong signal is in the Visitor Center in downtown Jasper, with plenty of places to sit and enjoy the mountain scenery too.

Room Tip: I think the rooms facing the river guests are more likely to see wildlife out of their cabin windows...

We stayed here in July 2014 our unit was in desperate need of upgrades. Furniture had holes in it with staples stick out. Location is very nice around the river wildlife on the grounds. The wildlife education session they have around a campfire are set for adults language was hard for my kids to understand. They cater to seniors, not a great family orientated place. I understand they are going for a rustic feel but there is a fine line to rustic and shabby. Expensive for what you are getting. Even the price printed in the rooms is cheaper than what you are charged. The cabin had a strange smell. Rooms have no A/C

Room Tip: I would try Beckers Chalet next time looked cleaner and rates are cheaper

Jasper House has a nice rural setting to it. A gazebo to sit in, picnic tables to relax at, and a fire barrel to roast marshmallows over. It is quiet and peaceful there. The menu has a good selection and the food is presented nicely.

The Jasper House Bungalow was exactly what we were looking for in a family lodge. The bungalow was quaint, rustic, and in a very scenic location right along a beautiful river. The staff was very friendly and the food was good. The bungalows were only a couple of mintues outside of town and near all attractions. The bathroom could have been bigger but we knew going in that this was more of a cabin and not a standard hotel. The kids really loved the place and had a great time playing with the resident dog (so did I :)). There were hiking trails all around the lodge and a little beach down by the river. Before we got to the bungalow we traveled from Banff up the Icefields parkway which is a must for anyone going to this area of the country. The scenery was breathtaking. Must stops are Bow Lake, Peyto Lake, Mistaya Canyon and of course the Columbian icefields where you definitely have to take a snow coach up on the glacier. Walking on an actual glacier was a major bucket list check off!! After the parkway we have arrived in Jasper at our bungalow. The town of Jasper was exactly as I expected, very quaint with that western charm. Nice restaurants and shops and not a lot of traffic or people. Jasper attractions to hit are Maligne Lake (must take a boat ride!!), Moose lake hike, Maligne Canyon overview and hike and the Jasper Gondola. I wish we had one more day to explore the Yellowhead highway corridor of Jasper....maybe next time.

What a wonderful place to stay during our three nights in Jasper! The best asset is the location-right on the river! Close enough to town (about 5 miles) to get there quickly, but far enough away to have solitude from the crowd. We had a river view unit and loved hearing the calming water outside our window each night and waking up one morning to a herd of elk cow and calves playing on the riverbank! The cabins we were in were spacious, comfortable and great for gathering with the other couples with whom we were traveling. We didn't use the kitchen much, but it was good to have the refrigerator for keeping our snacks, water, etc, cool.
We took at guided fishing trip from Online Sport and Tackle (it was great!!!!) and the restaurant at Jasper House Bungalows cooked our fish for us with side dishes. It was so nice to have the fish we caught that morning, cooked for us that evening! It was delicious! We had another meal in the restaurant and it was good as well.
The staff at JHB were friendly and helpful, too. Loved staying here and after seeing some of the other places I'd researched online, in person, I was very, very happy I'd chosen Jasper House Bungalows!
