“Not quite what I expected”
Reviewed 11 February 2009

I planned a quick getaway to Jasper with my partner and my mom. We figured we'd go between Christmas and New Years and take the train from Edmonton. I started looking at booking this trip in the middle of summer to find out that many of the Suites in the hotels had been booked already. We were specifically looking for a suite to allow us to have some extra room. Because of that we had to book with Expedia, which I normally wouldn't do, I'd rather book with the hotel directly, but it was our only option.

Anyway... about the hotel. The hotel is a bit of a walk from the 'downtown' area of Jasper. On a nice day it's actually a nice walk, but when the wind picks up, it can be kind of daunting. A cab ride into downtown is only about 6 bucks, so that's not bad at all.

The cafe in the hotel is only open in the am and in the pm, closed in the middle of the afternoon. The coffee is 'ok' but no starbucks... which you won't find anywhere in Jasper.

The lobby is very nice, great fireplace and siting area around the fireplace. They often had cookies in the lobby in the middle of the afternoon. We would often sit around the fire in the lobby with our books and just read the afternoon away.

Now for the room. It was much smaller than I had anticipated. The bedroom which had 2 double beds in it, had about one foot between the 2 beds. Very cozy... also the kitchen/living space had a pretty hard love seat for 2, and then a dinning room table. This was not very comfortable for the 3 of us to sit and enjoy a movie or just relax.

We also got suck right next to the maids work room. And well those kids were pretty loud through out the day. However we didn't ask to be moved or complained about the noise either.

The hotel did also offer free Wi-Fi, however you had to get a code from the front desk (which they didn't offer when we checked in). There is also a pool and 3 outdoor hot tubs. We didn't go into any of them. They were often filled with kids at night.

There is a great little lounge upstairs. We went there for dinner one night. The food was pretty good. A little over priced, but pretty typical of a hotel restaurant. The lounge also has a GREAT HUGE fireplace. Very cozy to sit by on the over sized leather chairs and enjoy a few beers.

Other things about Jasper: Must check out the Jasper Pizza Place... great pizza and losts of fun. Also check out the Jasper Brew Pub... great food and great local beers. The Vanilla Blueberry was my fave.

  • Liked — Great lobby fireplace and sitting area
  • Disliked — Small suite... too small for 3 people.

After reading some of the reviews i was slightly nervous about staying here but the hotel was brilliant!
room was cleaned everyday, lovely huge bath, spacious and warm (very important in december!!!)
had breakfast in the hotel every morning which was good and had dinner there twice. i found food expensive in canada in general and the food here was in line with every where else.
would definately stay here again!

Room was dark but clean. At least carpet was not stained. We had a meal as part of a group booking and that was excellent but did not eat in restaurant at all.
It was a 15-20 min walk into town but quite pleasant. It needs a makeover.

We were here for two nights and found the hotel to be well appointed if a little way out of the centere of Jasper, a long walk for disabled guests. however despite that we found the rooms to be well appointed, generous in space and facilities and there was free internet access for guests, brilliant!
We dined in the facilities for two nights and found the sercvice and food to be of an acceptable standard for the price and the service v. good. Overall it was a pleasant experience

Stayed 2 nights from Aug 28th.
Had room 220, away from Reception area. I had mailed them and asked for quiet room and they obliged.
Room was of good size and resonable in appearance, except no toilet paper, they did supply when asked. No Air Con. an the fan did not function at fist.
Could hear TV through wall and hear their Shower functioning.
Hotel gave the impression of a tempory structure more like a Portacabin.
Restaurant closed early one night due to having a block booking, not a great advert.
However on the plus side there is free Internet access and free E mail.

This hotel has the facilities to be really nice but it is badly run and very disappointing. The rooms are dirty, the kitchens have no natural light or ventilation and hence the whole room smells. The only source of fresh air is the window but as the staff sit outside chatting and smoking that does not work.

To compound this, the staff are unhelpful, almost resigned to the fact that they will disappoint their guests.

Jasper is a lovely town with many great hotels - this is certainly not one of them. When visiting a great mountain resort, why stay in a smelly dump - avoid.

We arrived very late at the Lobstick Lodge, and I was worried after reading the reviews on here that this would be a bad hotel. I was very happy to see that it wasn't.

Its location is on the motel strip in town. Jasper is tiny, so it is only a short walk to the shops and cafes.

We checked in and had very nice and professional front desk staff. We got a room on the 3rd floor near the newly refurbished restuarant. (there are 2 restaurants and a coffee shop)

The room was huge, had 2 giant beds, a writing desk, small table and chairs and a good sized bathroom. There were a couple of stains on the ceiling above the TV that looked like there might have been a burst pipe up there at some stage.

since we arrived late we went to the restaurant as it was open until 11pm. We had a very nice waiter. A lot of the stuff that was on the menu was actually not available though. We had 3 courses and it was nice food, but very very overpriced. They are going for the haute cuisine thing and failing miserable. They would do better to stick to good basic meals and leave the fancy stuff to fancier places!
Just because you lay it out on the plate well, does not mean you can charge a fortune for what was basically coffee shop food. The funniest bit was when we ordered the Black Forest Cake for desert and out comes a chocolate muffin cut in half. Very strange. Not worth the money, I would recommend eating elsewhere, although I must say the service staff were perfect.

We had no problems with noise, and the beds were very comfortable. The room was the perfect temperature.

Check out was again a pleasant experience carried out efficiently and in a friendly helpful manner.

We thought this motel was good, only the restuarant lets it down.
