Our stay at Grizzly Bear Lodge is one I will remember forever, not just for the absolutely astounding wildlife, but for the real sense of being in the wilderness. The arrival by seaplane sets the tone as you soar for about 35 minutes over the mountains, islands and coastline to the north of Vancouver Island - you cannot quite believe the beauty of it all. As you land in one of the 1000s of inlets you see your home for the next few days, a beautiful wooden chalet set close to the shore of Minstrel Island. This is NOT five star luxury - if you want that, go to one of the bigger lodges - this is much more intimate, with room for about 10 guests. Angus (whose father started the Lodge) and the rest of his team, including other family members, make you exceptionally welcome. Their combined knowledge and expertise both about the wildlife, and then, more importantly, locating them for guests to enjoy, is unsurpassed. And the home-cooked food is delicious. The only reason I've rated this 4 stars is because we were slightly late in booking (i.e. 8 months before our trip) the only room left was downstairs, which was not ensuite and it's right next to where you eat together, so if there are others who want to burn the midnight oil, it can be noisy. Also the weather was mixed when we were there, with a lot of rain and there's no central heating, so drying our clothes every night was tricky and left our room damp. They did supply a small heater but it was not enough. But you've got to remember you are in the middle of nowhere. We saw lots of humpbacks, black and Grizzly bears, sea lions, seals, fish eagles but the best display was one even Angus couldn't believe: a pod of Orcas chasing an even bigger pod of dolphins. It was like something out of Planet Earth: the sea exploded around us as over 100 dolphins tried to get away from their hunters. I felt supremely privileged to see such an incredible sight. This is not a cheap trip if you're working on a budget but in our opinion worth every last penny.

We had such a fantastic trip to this family owned and run lodge. Friendly people, fantastic food, comfy beds, amazing views, and great wildlife watching. We didn't want to leave this bit of paradise and still talk about How wonderful it was all the time. Don't miss out on this place. It was the highlight of our trip to BC

Such a peaceful, relaxing and personal experience in this remote pristine wilderness. We enjoyed our stay here so much!
The 35 minute float plane flight from Port Campbell was a terridfic start, taking us on stunning waterways to gorgeous Sailcone Lodge. Arriving at the lodge we were greeted warmly by Angus and his friendly, genuine staff and given time to settle in to our comfortable new surroundings. We loved our basic little cabin perched on the point overlooking the water! Throughout our stay Madeline kept us well fed with a great array of delicious meals and snacks whilst Glen and Kevin treated us to two fantastic days out on the boats, the first bear spotting and the second whale watching.
The spectacular location and beauty of Sailcone Lodge is enough in itself, however we were extremely lucky to view an abundance of wildlife unique to this area. Sighting grizzly bears, black bears, deer, humpback whales, seals, sea lions, porpoise, eagles and bird life was an added bonus.
Thanks too Glen for an exhilarating boat ride home - glad we were in such capable hands.
This experience went above and beyond our expectations and will be something we will treasure always.Thank you Angus and team for allowing us to share this magnificent setting with you. It is just magic!

I had an amazing couple of days with Angus, Cathy and John in the most beautiful location imaginable. Angus was the perfect guide, knowing just the right moment to come out with some nugget of information, and when to dial back and just let me be in the moment. I fulfilled a lifetime ambition to see bears in the wild, both black bears and grizzlies, and several mothers with cubs. Not to mention humpback whales, dolphin, porpoise, sealion, eagles.... and hummingbirds over breakfast. Cathy's food was absolutely delicious and catered for my dietary requirements with no problem. Best prawns I've ever eaten! This is not a cheap trip but in terms of value for money I think worth every penny. I'll be hoping to come back in the autumn some time.

The cabin was beyond outstanding; it was perfection. The owner was just great and his harbor tour was so fun also. The noon meal we ate cooked on board was delicious also. We are returning in the fall to this place as our experience was so good.

Room Tip: The cabins are offered in different sizes so choose according to your needs.
