“Consistent with HI Express brand”
Reviewed 9 August 2009

Stayed here with my family while returning from Vancouver Island on vacation. I am a fan of Holiday Inn (HI) Express hotels as I have come to like their consistency. In particular, I like their "Stay Smart" brand of towels, linen, pillows (hard and soft), shower head and their complimentary continental breakfast. The Kamloops property did not disappoint. The room we had was on the 2nd floor facing the parking lot/highway and included two Queen size beds and a good sized washroom. Everything was very clean. The pure white linens were pressed and smelled wonderful. There was no noise from the parking lot or the highway, but I must admit the air conditioner was going full tilt (very hot that day ~30 C). Internet in the room was free but not wireless, you need to be able to plug in a WLAN wire. The staff at reception were friendly and courteous but not overly so. We did use the swimming pool and hot tub and found both to be clean but very busy with hotel guests (to be expected on a summer weekend). Only issue here was that there were no pool towels later in the evening, but I just took some out of the adjoining exercise room. There is a sign on the pool door that says "Adults only" after 9:30 pm but I don't think the staff enforced this. Breakfast in the buffet room was still crowded at 9:00 am but given the fact that the property was sold out, that too was to be expected. The one lady who was keeping the food topped up was extremely busy but was courteous and very friendly, often asking folks if they enjoyed their breakfast. Some may complain about the quality of the breakfast (scrambled eggs and bacon are all microwaved) but for a family travelling, it is perfect. There is lots of cereal, juice, bread, bagels and muffins to cover everyone's fancy.

Finally, I will reinforce that the location of this property to the Trans-Canada highway is superb for those travelling by vehicle. The parking lot is ample (free) and secure. There is a well-reviewed East Indian restaurant 200 ft away from the main hotel entrance and a Dairy Queen and COSTCO within a 1/2 mile for those that like those things.

We paid in the $160 range but received a $25 Petro Canada gas card and a $20 off next stay coupon under the property's Summer Sizzle package. All in all, I would recommend this hotel.

This is a lovely hotel in a great location. We only stayed for one night but it was comfortable, clean and the staff were very friendly. We would certainly recommend it to others.

Our stay was horrible!!!

We spent 1 night here while travelling to Alberta and regreted every moment of it!

We were travelling with a 12 month old infant and a dog!

We were given a very noisy, dirty, smelly and old room on the 1st floor.

We had called previously and asked about pet policy... and explained that our daughter has allergies to strong cleaners! We were assured that even though the room we would be staying was a pet room, it was clean and it shouldn't smell strongly of cleaners!

Wow were they wrong!!!

The room was horible!
-The furniture was old and beat up.
-The bed was old and even though they had a new pillow topper on it... when you sat on it, it completely squished down.
-The carpet was all stained and dirty.
-There were dust bunnies all over the place!
-The bed spreads were stained and ripped.
-The room smelt sooo strong of perfumed deoderizer spray that we could bearly breath when we walked into to the room!

So there was no way that I was going to let my daughter play on the floor or even the bed!

So what do you do with a little one who wants to play and crawl???

When I went to the front desk to ask about the state of the room... the clerk was flirting with 2 guys also staying there and was very snippy about her responses to me.

Her responses:
-The room was cleaned!
-No cleaning staff on this evening... she could see if someone could come by in the morning!!!
(Very helpful! Especially since we were checking out in the morning!)
-It should smell strongly of cleaners because they didn't use any!
(Hmm... yup I would agree with that...but instead they used deoderizer spray!!! Very smart!)

And the crib that we were promissed when I booked a week in advance???

Not in our room, and the very friendly and helpful clerk at the front desks response?

Ummm!!! Its on your booking form...so its in your room!

Hmm.. obviously along with my sense of smell being off, I am also blind!

After assuring her that it wasn't in our room, she said that she would have to find someone to look into it as she didn't know where they were kept!

We ended up getting the crib long after our daughters bedtime!

When we checked out, I explained our story to the person working, and was told that they couldn't do anything because the manager wasn't there!

Since we had along way to drive yet, we had to leave and just count our loses!

They said that someone would be getting ahold of me!

Ya that never happend!

So long story short!!!

The price was expensive for a horrible stay!

After staying in the Holiday Inn Express in Courtney for the same price this one was like staying in a seeding old hotel!

The Holiday Inn Express in Courtney was beautiful! It was also brand new with new bed and furniture! It was extrememly clean and the service was wonderful!

Room was spacious, spotless and very comfortable. My only complaint would be that it was a little pricey (but not out of line for Kamloops in the summer). Our corporate 'preferred hotel' in Kamloops is the Four Points Sheraton and this was a much nicer room for less money.

Kamloops is about halfway between Vancouver and Calgary. The town is spread all over the place. Holiday Inn Express is right on the Trans-Canada but away from the downtown area. You would assume rightly that it's a transit hotel for visitors going in a variety of directions.
We stayed overnight getting the last room available. We have stayed at the hotel before and it's perfect to our needs. It's clean, the rooms are great and the staff helpful. We had some valuable stuff in our SUV, too much to move into the hotel. We fretted a little on the security of the parking but there was lots of lighting and we had no trouble.
There's no restaurant but there are lots within easy distance depending on your preference. We personally opt for Milestones which has a good menu and reasonable prices. Being coffee people, we also love the idea of getting on the road early with a Starbucks which is attached to the nearby Chapters but is open for the early morning trade.
We didn't use the pool or the business centre at the hotel. The serve- yourself breakfast is better than the average. They even do bacon and scrambled eggs. We noticed on this trip a new addition to self-serve menus. The hotels are adding a pre-cooked cheese omelette that you throw in the microwave. I think the jury is out on this one. It tastes like something pre-cooked and would probably work best wedging open a door.
I got the sense that the service had noticeably improved at Holiday Inn Express but so also had the prices. The bigger king bed rooms on the fourth floor now go for around $150 a night.
But, as i said, it works perfectly for us - it's clean, efficient, convenient, safe and right on the highway.

Our family stayed overnight at this holiday and really enjoyed ourselves. The pool was an added plus to let off some steam. The food at East Side Mario's was great.

I found myself in Kamloops a day early before my business training. I booked a night's stay at the Holiday Inn Express knowing that it is a reputable hotel chain. The property is consistent of all Holiday Inn Express Hotels. The front desk staff were efficient and friendly. Very clean all the way thoroughout the hotel and most importantly, the room itself. It is comforting to know customer service is well beyond expectation. This is a great place to stay.
