“Great place to stay”

Unfortunately we were only in for one night would have loved to stayed longer. Found the service to be very warm and friendly. The room was extremely comfortable and very clean. Will look forward to staying there on our next trip through.

The South Thompson Inn Guest Ranch and Conference Center in Kamloops, British Columbia is a fine local establishment and one of the best hotel facilities in Kamloops. While not fancy it is clean and comfortable and provides all the amenities that one would want in a good hotel other than full room service. The South Thompson Inn Guest Ranch and Conference Center is located about twenty minutes outside of downtown Kamloops right on Monte Creek. The rooms have hardwood floors and are immaculately clean and well maintained. There is a shared wrap around porch on the first floor which is a lovely place to sit and watch the creek flow. Overall it is a lovely facility and is recommended for a nice place to stay when in or passing through Kamloops.

The Good: Nice secluded location, very clean with friendly staff.

The Bad: We stayed here as part of our 3 nights golf package for 33 golfers and booked the hospitality room so that we could socialize and relive the glory and horror that comes with every golf game. Much to our chagrin we were informed that we could not bring our own alcohol and munchies into the room and had to purchase from the hotel. In over 10 years of organizing such an event this is the first time this happened. It put a serious damper on our festivities for 2 of the 3 nights until management came to their senses on the 3rd night and let us use the room as we had expected. Too bad, because we boycotted the hotel for the first 2 days and did not use any of the services of the hotel and went elsewhere. Trouble is that it created a huge inconvenience for our group.

Also Bad: I heard that they had a good continental breakfast but I’m not aware that anybody ate it in our group because you had to order it the night before – hard to plan that far ahead when you are dealing with a group of 33.

The Ugly: I did eat dinner in the lounge area one night and it was quite disastrous. The waitresses were great, but when we ordered the red house wine they were out of house red (how does that happen?), my friend ordered his favourite draft beer on tap and it was flat (really flat!) so he ordered something else, my salmon dish arrived raw so I sent it back and waited for 30 minutes for the replacement dish (the owner tried to explain to me how they are careful not to overcook the salmon as it ruins. He never acknowledged or apologized for their mistake even after the 2 people beside me fully agreed that it was raw (one of them works as a chef) – no adjustment to my bill was ever offered. Need I mention that their computer crashed and they had to process all the bills manually – it took forever for me to get my bill. Did I mention that the waitresses were very good in handling this crisis that was created by incompetent management.

Will I go back? No!

The property is well maintained in a good setting. The dry climate makes this a good place to have an event or personal visit in the fall, winter, spring. One of the best features is the veranda surrounding the rooms, which gives each room access to a covered ouside area adjacent to the rooms.

Had a wonderful couple of days getaway here with another family. Between the two families, we rented 2 rooms: a stable suite and another room at the inn. The inn room was beautiful, newly renovated and comfy ... especially loved the open view of the river from the balcony. The adults ended up hanging out here, and it was perfect. The teenage kids hung at the stable suite, as it was a bit away from the rest of the housing. This suite was a little more rustic and not updated like the other room, but very well equipped, with a full kitchen and lots of dishes. We mostly did are own cooking, which worked out really well.
The ranch itself is gorgeous ... spacious, and away from the hub bub of city life.
The staff were excellent ... always willing to accommodate in any way that they could. They made excelllent recommendations for activities in the area (golf, horseback riding) and were helpful with any special requests (ie. an extra cot in the stable suite).
I would defintiely recommend this place for anyone or any family looking for comfort and relaxation, and a chance to breathe!!!!

We were travelling for 3 weeks across BC and had booked South Thompson Guest Ranch as a bit of luxury for ourselves. Out of 10 different establishments we stayed at in Canada, this was the only one that made an error with our booking. It was rectified quickly and we were upgraded on our last night but just thought I would add that. Mainly we were staying in B&Bs. We couldn’t wait to get to South Thompson Ranch. How disappointed we were when we finally arrived. Initially the ranch and its location are stunning. We had booked the stable suit – which as you would guess is above the stables. I climbed the old, badly worn, in need of painting, wooden staircase to our accommodation and found I had to put my shoulder to the door in order for it to open – our children had no chance of opening it. Once inside, the suite was grubby the carpet was stained (badly), the furniture was tatty and the whole place smelled of horses. We are country people and are used to country smells but did not realise when they said stable suite it would also smell like a stable. We understood this was the cheapest accommodation on the ranch but still thought it would be of a better standard. Cheaper B&Bs had far higher standards. We decided to upgrade to the Inn itself. The room was the smallest family room that we had throughout our whole trip. It was comfortable, clean and had a pleasant view of the river. Unfortunately, we shared the balcony with another room so never felt we could completely relax when we were using it. The view over the river is lovely but on the other side is the Trans Canada highway and main railtrack. This didn’t bother us but other guests commented that they wished they had been aware of this before they booked. There are no tea/coffee facilities in the rooms but there is complimentary coffee downstairs in the lounge but it is not available 24/7. There was no information in the room about what facilities were available at the ranch. The children wanted to go horse riding but we had been to reception so many times to ask about other things, that neither my husband or myself could face going back yet again for more information that we felt should have been in the room. The breakfast was the worst we had in Canada. The breakfast is an extra $9.00 p/p for that you get a small box of cereal, muffin, butter, milk, coffee and juice. I may have missed something but there is nothing cooked. This was served in the bar area by a waitress who looked like she would rather be anywhere but there. The dishes were not the cleanest – this was even spotted by our seven year old who never usually notices these things. Initially we couldn’t understand why we seemed to be the only guests taking advantage of the breakfast but quickly understood why when it was served. Fortunately, we got into conversation with another guest who told us to eat at the golf course next door. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and the waitresses were superb – especially with the kids. We didn’t try the ranch restaurant in the evening as the menu, in our opinion, looked over priced for what was on offer and it didn’t seem to be very child friendly. We were upgraded to the manor house on our final night – it is beautiful and would be a super place for an extended family to stay. On the whole we were disappointed with our visit to South Thompson Guest Ranch. The Inn is clean and comfortable in a super location but we would not recommend it to families. In my opinion it is more suited to coach parties who are just passing through. This was also the only accommodation where we did not receive a warm friendly Canadian welcome that we had become accustomed to. The staff were all very efficient but made no effort to be friendly. The only member of staff that appeared to be happy in her job was the lady behind the bar in the evening.

This country-style hotel isn't the cheapest, but it's used by the Rocky Mountaineer operation to house overnight train travelers, and they say it's one of the best in town. Actually it's not in town, which in Kamloops is a big plus - it's about 20 mins east of the city, not far off Hwy #1, the other side of the S Johnson river, and well worth finding for the location. It's a kind of ranch, with corrals for horses and other creatures (we don't do horses, but it looks pretty impressive). It's surrounded by its own nicely-watered grounds, but the view to the south, across the river, isn't as nice as expected - it's a pretty boring river, and just beyond it is the noisy TransCanada - it might be better to ask for a room on the north side, facing the mountains. The rooms are nice, and have a shared balcony around them.

The proprietors are very keen to keep the Rocky Mountaineer franchise, and try very hard to please their guests. We arrived quite late, and the restaurant wasn't running at its best, but it's probably quite OK in normal hours.

A good place to stop if you are traveling through and find Kamloops depressingly industrial
