“Sometimes it's the little things”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 August 2014 via mobile

We recently spent a weekend at Lake Okanagan Resort (LOR) attending a family wedding. We were in a 3 bedroom villa and it was fabulous! We had 3 bedrooms, 3 full baths, washer & dryer, full size well equipped kitchen, diningroon, livingroom, and a balcony with table and chairs. Our villa looked out over the lake and the balcony was the ideal location for morning coffee or afternoon cocktails.
The grounds are fairly well maintained and we enjoyed our mornings at the pool. The pool area isn't fancy, one pool is shallower for youngsters and the other is larger and has a deeper area, but both ares have lots of loungers and tables & chairs. There is also a hot tub, large chess set and walk-up bar.
We had lunch both days at the deck restaurant and both the food and service was excellent! Servers were very friendly and attentive. The meal as well as the late night snack for the wedding were excellent as well.
The "little things" added up to be somewhat annoying and I believe are all a result of poor management.
We tried to make coffee in our villa Friday evening and the coffee pot kept quitting. Phone call #1- The front desk said they would have maintenance bring us a new one, didn't happen; Phone call #2 - maintenance couldn't find one that worked and would have housekeeping bring one first thing the next morning; housekeeping never brought a coffeemaker but with perseverance we did get ours to work although we did borrow one from other wedding guests as a back-up.
Another guest called the front desk with a request and was told someone would be right there. When the guest made a second call 1 1/2 hours later, the front desk said, oops, they forgot.
Housekeeping is never seen, I don't mean they are stealth like in their work, I mean they don't seem to get to the rooms. Our towels were finally replaced sometime between 3:30 and 4:30 although the sign was on the door most of the day. Family members didn't have their room done at all during their 3 night stay.
By the way check in is 4pm and checkout 10am. The key won't work after 10 am even if you've arranged a late checkout such as we did.
Beautiful location but needs to take care of the little things.

No water trampoline even though they advertise it. Black mold on shower ceiling. Cracked tiles. Rude and inexperienced staff. More stairs and hill climbing than i ever want to see again; and i'm in good shape. Kitchenette with nothing in it (drive 40 minutes into kelowna to buy cutlery and dishes) or rent them from the resort for $50/night. First day- room cleaning wants to come 7:30 evening. Second day- had to chase room cleaning down at 4:30. They asked us three times what we want done, to which we replied every time: just the normal stuff I guess. Then they locked us out on the balcony where we were waiting for them to finish our room. We had to holler at people walking down the path to get help. $320/night for nothing special at all.

Our family of 7 grew up coming to this resort and now, we are down to only the two of us. I notice the changes made since our last visit...including updated gardening, safety railings on "road side" of the Terrace building, new decking, new bar-b-ques and the new dock. I remember watching the dock being built on a previous holiday. Still need to update the pool areas and hot tubs....missing tiles and cracks. Lots of climbing of hills either down to the beach or up the the pools. Shuttle service is offered but just a FYI if you are a senior or have problems with walking uphill/downhill. What happened to the main restaurant? This was a mainstay for us to celebrate our anniversary, birthdays etc. but it seems to be closed. The resort has new owners so perhaps they are going to upgrade it?? An explanation of the closure would have been nice...the restaurant was always one of the shining jewels of LOR. The other shining jewel is the view....lovely! We saw sea planes landing, boats, tubing, swimming and waterplay all from our balcony which faced the lake! The beach has always been small but seemed much more crowded this time....hard to get a chair! The resort store has moved and downsized incredibly :( Make sure you stock up of food supplies in Kelowna BEFORE you arrive or it will be a 20 minute drive each way to go grocery shopping! The major downside of the resort is getting there...the road is horrendous and very winding...watch for animals alongside the road (big horned sheep etc.) The road has always been like that and I don't think it will ever change...but once you are at the resort, you forget about the road and RELAX. This resort has a family friendly reputation and, since we have made many trips here, we look at it as our "lake retreat". Awesome temperatures in the summer :)

Room Tip: The Lakeside rooms that face the lake are great for listening to the waves lap up on the beach. The...

Just got back. Let me give you a proper review. I'm not going to comment on mistakes by cleaning staff or problems that can be out of control by any resort, but let me comment on the general state of the resort.

The positives:
Beautiful grounds that are very well maintained with lots of trees, flowers, etc. Awesome little golf course as well. Great views of the lake. Boat dock is excellent (if you bring a boat). Service was top notch, every time I had a concern or a question the staff were helpful and professional. Villas were fabulous with a great kitchen, balcony, bedroom, etc. But yes they are not very soundproof. Everything was clean and the maid service was great, they even put away our dishes in the dishwasher and loaded it up again.

The negatives:
The main building is mostly off limits to regular guests as its only for private functions and events. Very disappointed. From the pictures I expected to be able to dine in the restaurant in this grand looking building overlooking the lake. The restaurant is off in a side room and out on part of the balcony. But prices seemed ok and the menu looked good, but we never ate their. There is a spa and small gym in the main building, but again it seemed like these things are shoved off to side and below the main building so you feel like you're a second class guest.

Beach is very small and was overcrowded on the day we went there. So we tried some of the water sports for our 12 year old but you have to be 16 to rent the seedoos and kayaks so my son couldn't do that. The water trampolines were also only accessible by swimming out to them, so that was out as well. My son was disappointed so we didn't use the beach much.

So we tried the pool area. The pool at the top (in the picture on their website) is very small and has cracked cement around the edge. The hot tub is small and only enough for 5-6 people. There is a larger pool, but again it looks old and dated with cracked stone/cement on the walkway down to the pool. Overall these areas need to be gutted and expanded.

The resort is on the side of a hill so everything requires a lot of walking up and down steep inclines, but nothing that was really bad but I wouldn't recommend this place for seniors.

And yes, the road to the resort is very nerve racking, but it's all paved and just take it slow and it's ok.

Overall the villas we stayed in were great (just get the ones facing the lake for the view) and the grounds were beautiful, just don't expect too much from the main building or the beach.

My recommendation to management . . . completely redo the main building and the pool areas and create a "grand" experience by having check ins, lounging, eating, spa, etc in the main floor of the main building. Build a second smaller building (over the aged tennis courts perhaps?) that could be for events and parties (you could do it fairly cheaply if you had an open concept). And I would truck in a lot of sand to expand the beach to the south, and then create lots of activities for kids of all ages. Do that I this resort could be a 10 out of 10.

Room Tip: Choose the villas and get one facing the water. Buy food from a grocery store.

We have come to the resort for several years and appreciate the large property and the now the excellent new boat dock as well as opportunity for kids to have a non urban vacation experience.
This year one constant concern expressed by many guests is the lack of garbage pick up at the beach. It is the worst we have experienced in 10 summers here. Although this may be a very challenging problem, we are puzzled why this can't be addressed by the administration even in the face of the ownership change and perhaps staff shortages. It would seem it should be a higher priority than some other areas as it leaves quests with a very negative impression of the resort and the management. PLEASE fix this !!

Landing in Kelowna, from the airport, you will drive down the main road of town towards the resort. Beautiful downtown with all the stores and restaurants that anyone would ever need. Well maintained, busy area with a serious high volume of traffic. Buy any groceries, booze, cigarettes, etc., here as the resort is about another 25 minutes away. Food is very expensive so shop at Walmart's or at the Save on Foods, where you can get a customer card immediately (do this first) and then take advantage of the in-store specials. Surprisingly, we found very few Convenience stores in the area and the ones we did find were usually associated with a gas Station (gas was about $1.35 liter when we were there).
Continue thru town and once you go over the main bridge, you will be taking the second right so stay in that lane as l've mentioned before, the traffic is very heavy. Also, DO NOT speed as there were hidden traffic stations set-up at numerous locations with stopped vehicles at all hours of the day and night, so the police are visible at all times.
If you've read a few reviews already, the drive to the resort once you've exited onto the road is very winding and harrowing at spots. DO NOT SPEED until you've driven the road a few times as there are many twists and turns and there are a few spots on the higher part of the mountain that do- not have any guardrails or barriers. Not to scare you but, the fall could be fatal or very injurious if you ever went over the side. Call me chicken, but despite the fact that we went into town almost daily, it wasn't until the end of the week that l felt comfortable going the speed limit (40-60 mph.).
So, going the speed limit, you should arrive at the resort in about 20 minutes. It consists of several buildings, most of which, overlook the lake on one side, the forestry on the other or if you were in the lower floor of the building behind us, the parking lot and the garbage bins (poor souls). Our room was #521 at the bottom of the hill/driveway, and had a spectacular view of the Marina (small) and of the lake. The weather was accommodating so the sunrise and sunsets were my favorite times of the day as they added a special perspective to the lake. The one-bedroom unit that we were in was very dated although management has tried to create a better ambience by adding nicer wall hangings, new shower curtain, but an orange is an orange no matter how you try to change it. Changing the carpets and installing new balcony screens would be a good place to start ( carpets were very stained and the screen which had holes kept falling off the track). The bedroom furnishings and bed were great and the kitchen surprisingly, well equipped (they could use an extra 2 and 4 quart pot). You have a full-size fridge, with freezer, 4 burner stove, microwave, 24" colour T.V, Satellite, and a DVD player. The Queen size pull-out bed/couch was comfortable and there was extra bedding for it in the closet. You are allowed ONE "complimentary" towel exchange and any additional bed linen changes/towels are at an additional cost. There were also 4 beach towels in the closet. The only air conditioner is in the bedroom, window mounted, so it helps to keep the bedroom door open as it will get very hot around mid-morning.
The beach (if you can call it that), is very small and coarse with a few lawn chairs available if you get there early enough. The resort has placed this huge floatation/jumping water prop for the kids (and apparently, some adults) who, while we were there, played on it continuously and seemed to be having a blast. The water was relatively clear but l found it much too cold for my liking. There are 2 in ground pools and a hot-tub up by the restaurant, although relatively small for this size of a resort, were constantly full and seating is very limited. Also, there is a poolside bar and pool table. If you have money to burn, the marina rents out floatation devices, boats and Ski Jets but they are very expensive with an up-front retainer and for the motorized vehicles, gas is extra. The onsite restaurant is very expensive and the menu much too limited, portion sizes were small and usually "sold-out" (ya right, at the beginning of the most busiest time of the summer?) of popular menu items. But, in all fairness, the plates which l did see, did look very appealing and the few customers eating there did seem to be enjoying their food (or perhaps it was the wine). There are BBQ's available at each set of buildings and management supplies the gas and cooking utensils which were a real bonus. There was a heat wave going on while we were there so having an outdoor cooking medium was very appreciated. Also, the flora and landscaping are very nice and seem to be well-maintained.
There are many area attractions and just driving around Kelowna is very picturesque. We mostly drove around the area, stopping at markets, etc. Drop into any tourist Info centres and pick-up some of the brochures and pamphlets of the area as the maps and street directories are very helpful although Kelowna was very easy to navigate around in.
So, in closing, the trip and the resort were good. Would we go back.....perhaps.

Room Tip: Front, lower units by the Marina have the best views but there are new units on the top of the hill...

We just left tody after 5 days. We were in the new condo's and they were very nicely decorated with beautiful kitchen. We had a problem with a few things; our blinds in the living room broke and they were not able to provide replacement blinds, instead we had to use a blanket to cover the window at night. The sprinklers come on at 6 am and are so loud they wake you up. The walls and floors are very thin and you can hear footsteps from the floors above. They don't have cots and instead offered an air mattress which deflated so we asked for a new one...it also deflated. My son ended up sleeping on a lawn chair. Pool area in need of some major TLC. Probably would pay a bit more next time and stay somewhere else.
Golf was awesome! Loved the wildlife; deer, birds, gofers
