“Beware the break in's”
Reviewed 2 September 2008

Let me start by saying its a lovely new hotel with big rooms and comfy beds, in a terrible area of town. The continental breakfast has a bit to be desired with the watered down juice and scary looking eggs, sausage patties and waffles in the warmer.

The window in our truck was smashed when we went to leave in the morning and personal items had been stolen. We were also left a little gift (bag of crack cocaine) on the back seat. If we had known that break ins were a problem, or that the hotel was in such a poor area of town, we would have brought everything in out of the vehicle and parked right in front of the hotel. Unfortunately the staff didn't inform us when we checked in that the break in's had started several days prior with 3 vehicles being broken into and one being stolen. There were two other vehicles other than ours that was broken into the same night. When I reported it to the front desk they didnt appear surprised and were not willing to help us out. The manager was not in but I requested that the clerk call him as the police and my husband were going to want to talk to him Jason, the manager, was very condescending and rude towards my husband and made it out that it was our fault that our vehicle was broken into. The hotel is apparently putting video survallance and better lighting in, but it doesn't appear by other reviews that this has happened as of yet.

If you do stay at this hotel, bring EVERYTHING out of your vehicle into the hotel and park as close to the lobby as you can. One of the vehicles that was broken into while we were there was parked right along the roadside.

Thank you for your comments about the hotel. We appreciate the feedback and continue to use this to help us provide better service and accommodation to our guests.

We apologize that you did not find our breakfast choices to your liking. We provide a complimentary deluxe continental breakfast daily and serve items that guests have indicated they like.

Unfortunately the theft of items from cars is not a problem that is isolated to just our hotel or just our area. Please know that we most recently have added night security. We do continue to highly recommend that guests never leave anything in their cars.

Please accept our apologies that you did not have a good experience with your stay.
We hope that you will give our hotel another try the next time you are in Nanaimo.

We stayed at the Ramada for 2 nights August 23 – 25, 2008.
Upon check-in we were greeted with a large sign saying that it was a privately owned hotel and management wasn’t responsible for the car break ins which had been occurring. We then checked in with the unfriendly person at the front desk. Upon getting our room key and listening to her bored voice reciting about breakfast & other amenities, she told us several times about all of the car break-ins that have occurred and they are not responsible. We immediately parked in the closest available parking space to the entrance. If you stay here, make sure that you get a parking spot near the front entrance! There was a lot of broken glass in parking spaces at the side and back of the building. At least they could have swept it up. The hotel should be pro active in dealing with the problems such as having bright lighting and a fence around the parking area.

The rooms are large, nice and new. The bed was very comfortable and the A/C worked great. Housekeeping is non existent! There was food left behind in the fridge (don’t know how long). There were several food wrappers on the floor beside the bed and side table in plain view. Our room was never even made up the next day! By the time we arrived back late in the evening, we were too tired to complain.

Their breakfast buffet is adequate. You have white bagels, white bread, doughnuts, muffins and cereals. There were some lukewarm scary looking sausage patties, Eggo waffles and scrambled egg discs in the chafing dishes. The fruit juice was watered down but the coffee was good. The breakfast is included with your stay.

The check-out was just as cold as the check-in. They never even asked how our stay was and we never offered our opinions as they didn’t seem to care.

Would we stay here again, I don’t know. The hotel was convenient for the purpose of our trip but we wouldn’t go out of our way to stay here.

This is our first time visited Nanaimo. We travelled from Vancouver to Victoria and then Nanaimo on Aug. 22nd. We stayed in Ramada Inn as this is a newly constructed hotel which closes to downtown Nanaimo. We spent two nites from 22nd to 23rd there and were very satisfied with the room amenities. We have two kids travelled with us, 3 and 5. We were arranged to have the top floor (there are total 4 floors) with 2 queen beds. The room has ample space. The beds are very comfy. There is also a small balcony facing the road. The room is extremely quiet. We first thought there were nobody next doors. In fact, we found out that the hotel was fully occupied during the weekend. The hotel's soundproof is excellent. We all have a very good sleep. Although our balcony is facing the main road but we hardly hear any traffic noise at nite. To summarize the pros and cons:

Pros: clean, quiet and spacious rooms with balconies; iron and iron board, hair dryer, TV with kids channels, ample free parking spaces; free breakfast (from 6:30 am and to 10:00 am); business centre with free internet access and printer to use, exercise room with free use of fitness equipment, drinking water and towels; coin laundry; excellent soundproof, helpful and friendly staff and management; close to downtown and departure bay ferry terminal.

Cons: no in-house restaurant and pool. However, this is not a problem with us. As it's easy to find a place to eat and we don't need a swim. If you like to swim, better visit the beaches in the island to enjoy the nature.

As far as we know, the hotel also has rooms with king size bed and adjacent rooms with door in between for convenient access.

We highly recommend travellers to stay in Ramada Inn.

Ok, my car was stolen in nanaimo. why am i still rating my experience as above average? the hotel staff was amazing with the help in recovering my car as well as helping me pay for taxis. Jason, the supervisor was helpful and more than accommadating. I know car theft can happen anywhere, but i dont think that help like the kind i received would be provided at just any hotel. they were wonderful.

the rooms are very clean and the beds are comfortable. the rooms have decks and flat screen t.v.s the breakfasts were better than anywhere i've stayed.

thanks jason!

This hotel is new, clean and easy to get to. Nice hotel and ok breakfast bar.

We stayed there overnight on our way to Victoria. Nanaimo is a nice little city.

I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a nice place to stay and a great value.

Rooms are nice, we had a small patio and could sit outside. Wireless Internet was nice and worked well.

  • Liked — The rooms and the value for the money.
  • Disliked — no pool.
