My husband & I only got to spend one night at the Pine & Picket, but we would have stayed all week if we could have. Our bed was a cloud, our view was good, and we had our own little porch with table & chairs where we had our cocktail hour (we were in the Provence room). Ingvar stopped by with a bottle of his yummy homemade wine, and we got to hear more about the history of the house and how he & Ania came to be in Nanaimo. Breakfast was sumptuous - Ania's scones are the best I've tasted: buttery, warm, melt-in-your-mouth nuggets of joy. The fruit salad & eggs benedict were delicious, too. What wonderful hosts Ania & Ingvar are! We'd definitely return there, and highly recommend it to our friends.

We are repeat customers who keep coming back for the hospitality, comfort, and sumptuous breakfasts. Ingvar and Ania are courteously welcoming, attentive and amazingly helpful as guides to the entire island and region. We have stayed in two different rooms during three visits. The beds and showers are outstanding. The two upstairs rooms share a comfortable lounge with its own balcony, sofas, coffee and tea, not to mention Ania's surprise treats. Fresh fruit cups decorated with (edible) leaves and flowers, lavish servings of eggs benedict (or scrambled), sausages, waffles, crepes, flambeed bananas and other delicacies often make breakfast the feast of the day! After several years in England, we found the ultimate scones right here in Nanaimo! We have directed several friends and relatives to the Pine and Picket, and all were enormously pleased, though they sometimes said they had to skip lunch! Valerie and Pete

The Pine and Picket is the beautiful home of Anya and Ingvar. We usually stay in hotels on our travels but we decided to try a B & B and boy did we strike lucky! We were made to feel extremely welcome, the accommodation was spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated and the bed was of a very high quality. We had a great view across to the ferry port.
Anya and Ingvar had carried out research, by staying in other B & Bs, into what people would like to find in a B & B and they have certainly got it right.
All in all this was a great base to explore some great places on Vancouver Island.
Ingvar and Anya are extremely friendly, welcoming and very interesting people and to top it all, Anya's cooked breakfasts are magnificent!
We were really sad when we left after 4 nights!

Although I had been staying in lovely hotels on my vacation, staying in Pine and Picket with hosts Ania and Ingvar reminded me again how great staying in a B&B can be.
They offered hospitality, good stories and went out of their way to give me a good time. Their personal touch, as well as Ania’s great breakfast, made it a wonderful stay.
The Provence Room was lovely and clean, and decorated with care. Nice thick towels in de bathroom (ensuite, shower, sink and toilet). Good bed, and internet access in the room. The only thing I would change is the carpet, but that is a matter of taste!
I had a look at the Madagascar room as well, and I must say it looks more impressive than on the photo on Internet!
The water views are not a major feature, and although the balcony is lovely with its flowers, it offers little privacy as it is facing the road.
But for those travelling without a car: the B&B is walking distance from the ferry harbor (Departure Bay). There is a bicycle rental nearby as well (near the ferry) and cycling along the seawall is a great way to visit the city center. Walking probably takes 30 minute or so.

For a weekend stay between two business trips, I decided to try the Pine and Picket B&B in Nanaimo. I had found it via the Vancouver Island Accommodations website, and the reservation was quickly confirmed via email. A credit card number held the reservation, while payment was only required at checkout.

The owners of the B&B, Ania and Ingvar, are a young 50-ish couple who much enjoy traveling themselves, and have created a cozy, welcoming place for visitors to Vancouver Island. They have two rooms, the Provence Suite and the Madagaskar Suite, each decorated in a particular theme. The rooms feature a comfortable Queen bed, small writing desk with wired high-speed Internet access, as well as a private en-suite bathroom with a shower. A common lounge area and balcony with harbour-view is shared between the two rooms. Each room features a TV with DVD player and VCR, and they have a small library of movies available.

The B&B is very conveniently located right near the Departure Bay ferry terminal, and they will gladly pick you up there or at the other terminal south of town. If you’re driving, there is ample parking in front of the B&B, which is on a quiet side street. The house itself is situated on a hillside just up from the Nanaimo harbour, which can be seen from one of the rooms and the shared balcony. The house has recently been tastefully renovated.

Both hosts go out of their way to make you feel welcome, and Ania had prepared freshly made Nanaimo bars when I arrived. (Oh so yummy!) In the evening, Ingvar offered some homemade quince wine or plum brandy.

For breakfast the first day, Ania prepared delicious almond scones and eggs Benedict, while the second day she made waffles with flambéed bananas, which were certainly not light on calories but very high on the taste scale. Breakfast comes with a large portion of fresh fruit, great-tasting coffee, and home-made quince jelly and other delicacies. Having breakfast at my desired time was not a problem, and Ania says she will even prepare breakfast for people wanting to take an early ferry departure.

Overall, this is a comfortable, friendly place to stay for one night or a few days in Nanaimo.

We were two couples staying at this B & B. The owners/operators, Ania and Ingvar constructed this B & B several years ago by adding upstairs rooms to a 1-story residential dwelling. They did most of the works themselves—and they did a fine job.

The two upstairs rooms were large and well-appointed. Our room was the "Provence" room and was decorated accordingly—there were even (very tasteful) cherubs on the walls. We had a balcony with views of the ocean, upon which we had a pleasant afternoon tea with our traveling companions. There was also a sitting room between the two upstairs rooms with magazines, chairs and a sofa.

For breakfast we had crepes with sausage and plentiful fruit, juice, and rolls. They were all excellent.

Finally, our hosts were welcoming, friendly, and helpful throughout our stay. The cost was about $130 per couple. We will gladly stay there again if we pass through the area.
