Some of the rooms in this hotel have been redone beautifully, with panoramic views of the harbor, ultramodern furnishings and beautiful baths, while none of the corridors or the lobby seem to have been fixed up. It looks like they ran out of funds. The owner is also paranoid about the redone rooms -- although the hotel has rollaway beds and although there is plenty of room in the new rooms for a rollaway, the staff would not give us one because the owner is worried that the beds might make marks on the newly painted walls (????). We had to call a manager at home to get permission to get a rollaway. The new rooms are called "junior suites," but since they are each only one room, this is hotel-speak hyperbole. Don't be misled.

This Hotel was a dream come true for us and exactly what we needed to help wind down our vacation to Vancouver Island. The location is fabulous, definately the best in Nanaimo. Our room was on the 10th floor with a wonderful view of the Ocean. The juliet style balcony was a bit small but still provided a romantic spot to view the harbour. The rooms, while not overly large, were decorated beautifully! The furniture, television, bedding and bathroom were all completely wonderful! The bed creeked a bit but nothing major. We loved the room so much we had to bring our family and friends who live in Nanaimo up to the room to show it off.
We were so relaxed we even ordered room service for breakfast as we just didn't want to leave the room. The food arrived in a very short amount of time, steaming hot and delicious. The omelet was huge and had lots of flavour and toppings of your choice.
The mini-bar fridge had a great selection of beverages, alcoholic and non-alcoholic. The prices were a bit steep for us but I can see that in a pinch it can be very convenient.
The cleaning staff were very friendly, and efficient.
We will most DEFINATELY be back to the Coast Bastion, it was the highlight of our trip!

Great hotel on the waterfront. Our room was huge and they put in a very comfortable extra bed for the third person in the group - also threw in a free breakfast as our room was over a 'noisey' fan which really wasn't that loud. Great service - had dinner and breakfast in the restaurant and no complaints. Would stay there again.

I've stayed here many times but the last two times the hotel had just finished a major overhaul and it is fabulous. I brought a large group (60 room nights) to Nanaimo and I was pleased to have recommended the Coast. Folks loved it.
Two minor problems: Parking for big vehicles still a problem in Nanaimo (generally) and we had an issue both nights this stay with a neighbour who smoked in a non-smoking room. Hotel staff didn't handle it on the first night so when it happened again, we stood over them while they dealt with it. Our non-smoking room was too beautiful to sully with smoke from someone who is going to pay $100 for the privilege. The Coast gave us the second night free when we asked them to.

Our stay was pretty much flawless. The room was beautifully done up and the bed was very, very comfortable. The balcony had an incredible view of the harbour and yet was not noisy even with all of the float planes. there was a nice little settee, a great desk, it was spacious and really welcoming. The restaurant decor was so cool, very unique and very west coast, worked in all the elements of driftwood and water and green ... loved it!

I have only the tiniest of complaints!!

* The air conditioning was running full blast before we got in, so it took awhile to warm up;
* The TV channels changed very, very slowly and there were no buttons on the TV, so you had to use the remote control;
* I felt that they should have offered us a second night at a reduced rate, since the hotel was obviously almost completely empty and I expressed interest (Note to hotel: Once you have a customer in the building, do whatever you can to keep them there!) instead of simply offering me the same rate;
* The toilet-paper holder is affixed weirdly, so you have to turn all the way around to get toilet paper (or risk knocking it into the tub) -- I know it's a small complaint, but it's very annoying;
* The wireless was very, very slow.

Overall, it's not a luxury hotel, but close to. I got a better rate by paying ahead of time on their website so I recommend that. Stay here for a great time and close proximity to restaurants (Modern Cafe was hip!), the waterfront tourist/ice cream kitsch (can't-miss) and some very funky shops (check out Shoe Fly and the used book places!) within easy walking distance.

I say stay here anytime you can.
