Owner description: Nanaimo Museum: Discover Nanaimo’s fascinating history in our new museum located in the VI Conference Centre. The main gallery offers a sense of what life was like for Nanaimo's earliest settlers and the Snuneymuxw First Nation. Our award winning replica coal mine is a special treat. The museum also manages the Bastion, an original Hudson's Bay Company post built in 1853. Don’t miss the gift shop!Museum Hours: 10am - 5pm Monday to SaturdaySummer Hours: Open Daily 10am - 5pm

This museum boasts a variety of displays showing various aspects of the area. We visited an interactive exhibit on some of the Canadian polar expeditions that children would enjoy. A recreation of a coal mine hall lets you imagine that time. We looked at a small exhibit on the timber industry and one of the docents provided a lot of interesting background as he had worked for a timber company for 28 years. An exhibit on First Nation people was informative. And a high cushioned stool shaped like a Nanaimo bar, description of bathtub races, and an old schoolroom were amusing. The gift shop is very open and easy to browse with a range of prices and variety of items.

This museum provides a comprehensive overview of the history of the Nanaimo area, highlighting First Nations, community social activities, and changing exhibitions. The current Art Deco fashions exhibit is very well done and features items from the museum's collection as well as those sourced by the guest curator.

Extremely worth the visit. Nanaimo is full of history, the Nanaimo Museum has a wonderful, staff that is more than willing to spend time to answer anything about the area. The museum also does actual tours of the area. The exhibits are very interesting and the staff seems to have first hand knowledge about each and every item.
