“Lord Tyee thinks he died and went to heaven here”
Reviewed 6 February 2014

Lord Tyee's dumb human was not aware that part of this lovely park is a Dog Park until our sixth or seventh visit--he can run free! He can pretend he really is a wild wolfy (instead of only 3/4) and meet all the other dogs pretending the same thing and lap water from the stream and ponds and consider what life would be like if he just refused to obey when his human at last says, "Car-car."

The part that is the Human Park isn't bad, either. Sure, you must keep your human on a leash, but there are benches for the weaker or older apes to sit on and there are even special little buildings for them to do their business in without leaving a mess. In the summer, they can even swim a little or pretend to fish. The trails are redolent with the messages left by other dogs, interspersed with tantalizing hints of deer, rabbits, rodents, squirrels and raccoons--not that the humans will notice much of that. They're more interested in the birds.

Definitely take your de-conditioned humans to Colliery Dam Park. There's a trail here for everyone, long or short as you like.

“A popular fresh water swimming area”
Reviewed 20 December 2013

This popular urban park is a great place for walking the dog (with designated off-leash areas), swimming, fishing and hiking.

There are 2 main entrances, each with a parking lot. The best one is the larger lot at the corner of Sixth and Wakesiah. Here there is a large map where you can decide how you want to navigate the area. Washrooms are located here too.

The meandering trails join 2 lakes and provide a pretty walk through the woods with intermittent lake views.

The future of this park is kind of in limbo right now. The dams were built in 1910 by the Western Fuel Company to supply water for the coal mining business. The coal mines are gone and now there is debate about the stability of the dams. Time will tell if they stay or not. For now, we get to enjoy the area but who knows for how long.

“Picturesque”
Reviewed 10 October 2013

One of Nanaimo's many lovely parks. This is a wonderful retreat on the hottest of hot summer days. There are two main pools, refreshingly cool and a popular dipping area, both surrounded by the lush rainforest, typically found on Vancouver Island. A looping system of trails links the two halves of the park, and as well, a trunk trail leads up into the woods in Morrell Park, which in turn has it's own series of trails that link to the "Powerline Trail" and Westwood Lake. This is a runner's paradise, with undulating, well groomed trails, or, if you prefer, an asphalt trail which cuts through the park from Wakesiah Avenue to the Parkway Trail - a southend link that spills into Chase River, 13 kms distant.
This park is wonderful, year round, and is one of my favourite running spots.

“Beautiful Park”
Reviewed 7 October 2013 via mobile

Great place for a walk with the dog, or even for a bike ride. I'm not one to swim here, there are better places around town.
It'll be interesting to see what this place is like in 10years, if the dams are still around or not.
