“Hit the spot”

We were looking for some quick and easy sushi on our way home from the beach, this was the perfect place. Run by a nice family the food was good but the place is small, mainly set up for take out.

“Best Japanese Food in the Okanagan”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2014

The sushi chef at Sushi Genki had the traditional training in Japan, and then went on to work at the Banff Springs Resort. If you have ever been to Japan, had the best sushi of your life, and are looking to recreate the experience, THIS is where you go. Every bite is perfection, and the presentation is impeccable. I feel like I'm in Japan whenever I'm in the shop!

“Delicious!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 April 2014

Very tasty food at a very reasonable price. The beef udon soup is the best I have ever tasted! Delicious broth. They have recently added menu items such as raman and teriyaki rice bowls. Very busy and extremely friendly staff.

“Great Value, Personal Service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 September 2013

I have a new favourite place for sushi since Sushi Genki came on the scene.

I'm sure it doesn't compare to the famous sushi places in larger centres, but by Okanagan standards, Sushi Genki offers a delicious, beautiful selection at a good value.

Their menu is more limited than most other Japanese restaurants in the area, due to the limitations imposed by the small kitchen and small "staff": chef Kazuo and his wife. In addition to the sushi you will find some salads, udon noodle soup, and some desserts, but the focus of the place is on sushi, which is presented artfully and with love.

One thing that sets Sushi Genki apart for me is that when I order a dinner box with assorted sashimi or nigiri, I get a better variety of "chef's-choice" pieces than I have ever gotten at any of the other sushi restaurants in town.

The selection available in the "roll combo" plates changes on a monthly basis, with one standard offering and one vegetarian offering. As they don't have a deep fryer, their "dynamite rolls" are made with cooked shrimp and then sprinkled with crunchy flakes - a delicious alternative, although I don't know that they're necessarily more "healthy" as the name implies.

The restaurant itself is very small, and seats about seven diners at the most. They are licensed and offer a few Japanese beers and I think sake as well, if you are dining in (and manage to snag a seat). In my experience, they're very busy around dinnertime and if you are planning to order takeout, call up to an hour ahead.

Overall, if I just want sushi to eat at home, Sushi Genki is my first choice. If I am looking for something more varied or if I am dining out, especially with people who do not like sushi, I am inclined to go to another Japanese restaurant where tempura and teriyaki and the like are also available, and where there is ample seating with a little more privacy.

I wish Kazuo the best success and hope one day he's able to upgrade to a larger restaurant with more seating!

“Not really overly impressed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 September 2013

The sushi is meh, not bad but definitely not up to the local standards set by Ginza or Evergreen and several orders of magnitude further down the sushi hierarchy than O'Zekis in Kelowna. The place is a stand up takeout hole in the wall so don't expect ambiance. I made the horrible mistake of not carefully reading the menu and ordered the small rolls which are not just small, they're microscopic. They're more like cut up cigarillos than sushi rolls. The nori was disconcertingly chewy, but the rest of the sushi was difficult to review as there was so darn little of it. The bigger rolls might be better but I won't find out as I'm not going back.
