Metlakatla Wilderness Trail

Owner description: Metlakatla Wilderness Trail is a breath-taking Pacific North Coast trekking experience. The 20 km round-trip consists of 5.5 km of an all-weather gravel surface including approximately 3 km of cedar boardwalk. The remaining 4.5 km of the trail are clearly marked and hikers walk on the natural mossy-surface of the forest floor following the contours of the coastal shoreline. The trail also offers three engineered suspension bridges and a forest canopy walkway to a tower viewpoint.

A 20 minute ferry trip from Prince Rupert and you are thrown into a population of 75 people living in Metlakatla. Following the road you get to the beginning of the trail. The first 5 km are a nice, easy walk where you are crossing a little suspension bridge and later on another one to get to the look out tower where you watch the wild live from above. After 5 km it's getting more and more a wilderness trail to get to the next look out tower where we had to turn around to catch the ferry back to prince Rupert. We enjoyed the time on this just recently finished trail where they promised to do a lot more developing for the next season as well. They were considering a zip line. Be aware that there is a minimum of 2 people otherwise they won't let you go cause of the wildlife. Ask for the ferry schedule, there are different leaving times on schooldays and holidays. You get a hostel discount of 5 $ when you show the receipt, so it costs 20 $ + 6 $ for the ferry one way.

As I said in one of my earlier reviews, I am only moved to do a review for that which is extraordinary or unexpected. Unfortunately it seems that a good number of the ones that have done seem to express disappointment through to outrage at those hotels, restaurants or experiences that have failed to even come close to delivering what they claimed.
The Metlakalta Wilderness Trail is absolutely wonderful! The effort that has been put into this walk by the First Nations People on whose lands it is situated has to be experienced to be adequately described. The lands are beautiful, the walk is through pristine country as it takes a little boat ride to get there and the 10ks would worry the average walker. Don't be deterred, every step is magical and every new turn brings a new and untouched vista. The locals running the walk are totally accommodating and justifiably proud of their country,

getting to the trail is an adventure, on the little ferry. the hike goes through some beautiful scenery. the bridges are great and the viewpoint is exciting. along the beach many bald eagles to be seen. the forest has a well laid trail. the beach is easily accessible for picnics on the huge tree trunks.

This is by far the best walking trail on the West Coast. Wonderfully maintained, beautiful scenery, and fantastic bridges and canopy walk.

I took a friend & client from Scotland on this spectacular hike. She is far more into hiking than me and I was apprehensive as I was still recovering from an ankle fracture. The trails are very well constructed and the suspension bridges and viewing tower add to the adventure. It was easy to drop off the trail and beach comb. This a great hike for folks of all levels of experience. Take a packed lunch and don't take your dog (the bridges are not dog friendly). One comment is it is an 'out and back' hike rather than a circuit, but don't let that put you off, there's plenty of new things to see on the way back.
