I don't think a band played the night we were there as the only pub noise we heard was some chatter when we were in the hallway - the room was quiet. We slept great, The room and the bathroom were both pristine clean. The price was right and it was a sweet find for the one night we passed through. W-Fi worked Great. No breakfast options, but there are several coffee shops downtown.

When looking for ski accommodations, I usually look for proximity to the hill, clean and comfortable rooms and a kitchen. The flying steamshovel is not on the hill but it is located only minutes away in Rossland. We stayed in Room 7, which included a full kitchen, living room with a sectional couch and a jacuzzi tub. This room is the first one at the top of the stairs and is at the north end of the building, farthest away from the bar. We stayed over a Saturday night and in contrast to previous reviews, we did not hear any noise from downstairs.

The room itself was very large and newly renovated. All the appliances, utensils, plates were brand new. The large sectional faced a flat screen TV with digital cable (non-HD). We liked that there was plenty of room to spread out all our equipment but strangely, there was no closet for clothes. There are hooks at the entrance but that's it. The heating system was difficult to control, it was either all or nothing. Attempts to adjust the settings did not work. If left on, the room would turn into a sauna after one hour. During the night, I had to wake up to turn it off and have to get up a few hours later to turn it back on as the cold became uncomfortable. Very inconvenient. There's no lighting bedside. The bed was comfortable although it sits about 4 feet off the ground. The bed has shelves underneath but are hard to access as they're close to the wall.

Wifi was free and decently fast.

The hotel is located a few minutes walk or drive into town where there is an excellent grocery store as well as coffee shops.

Overall, its a pretty decent value place to park yourself for a ski vacation if you don't want to pay for ski-in ski-out but it definitely has its drawbacks.

We stayed in the last room down the hallway, it had a huge jacuzzi tub, which we didn't use, stayed there one night. The bed was super comfy, tv mounted on wall, nice decor, very clean. I don't actually know if a band was playing or not, but we were the room furthest from the stage so I don't imagine that you would hear too much anyways. HOWEVER. When you come in the doors from the back and head up the stairs, there was a huge pile of vomit on the stairs that was there for the two days that we were in and out of there. I can't imagine that staff didn't see it. But i am guessing that some fool from the pub just walked around the corner to the quiet stairwell and let er rip (Which pub patrons can, and that is a downside)
ALSO, when you check in, it is at the convenience store on the very bottom level. Haha they gave us a $5 voucher to use for "breakfast" which was, anything in the store that you would want to eat for breakfast. Doritos? There were tiny little muffins, old apples, and tostitos on the hot rollers if you wanted. Hmmm. A really unappetizing option.
Anyways, it was a pub kinda place, wouldn't stay again unless it was for a party weekend cuz it is convenient to be able to puke anywhere around that place and no one seems to care....

Room Tip: Choose the room with the Jacuzzi tub at the very end of the hallway, it is sure to be quietest in th...

We stayed here for 3 nights over Christmas to ski at Red. The first two nights the room was fine as the pub was closed. The third night a band started playing at 10.20 and carried on for over 2 hours at a volume with so much bass and feedback that our room shook. If you come to rossland to ski and want a decent nights sleep do not stay here.

Great place, friendly staff at restaurant and bar. Clean room. Close to resort and city nightlife. Store in first floor has all essential things you need if you forget anything. Definitely will stay there again!

My husband and I stayed at The Flying Steamshovel in March 2013 prior to moving to Rossland permanently. We were very impressed with the size of our room (HUGE!). All of the rooms are recently renovated, so are surprisingly modern and nice despite the Hotel itself being a bit dated.

It should be noted that The Flying Steamshovel, (Or just "The Shovel" as the locals call it) is a really popular pub. If you stay on a Friday or Saturday night, you won't be far from one of the happening-est places in town. . . I would probably go ahead and call this place a "Pub that rents out a few rooms" as it's very much a pub first, and a hotel second. It is located about 2 blocks off Rossland's main-drag, which makes it very centrally located.

All in all, it's maybe not a place that I would bring my partner for a romantic getaway.... but certainly an awesome place to stay for a couple nights while you ski up at Red Mountain during the day, and want to have drinks with your new-found friends at night.

Friendly service, good location, adequate rooms.
