“Pricey but worth it!”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

I totally agree with the reviews here. This place is a true gem! A lot of the credit goes to Kelly, the manager, for making everything such a personal experience. Loved the fresh baked muffins delivered to our door each morning. Dinners there are expensive but truly a worthy experience. Fresh flowers and fresh veggies at every turn! Wonderful gardens!

Hastings House comes with an awesome reputation, and in most cases it lives up to what is said about it. It is a small hotel, and in that way very intimate....maybe a little too intimate for some. The staff are all friendly and helpful, and go out of their way to help guests enjoy their stay. The hotel is quaint and "Olde worlde", and as a result, in the case of our suite, a little dark due to the dark fixtures and fittings. The bathroom was poor, in my view, quite out of place in an hotel of this quality, and improvements there would be a good idea. The view from rooms is fantastic, and a definite plus point, as is the quietness of the location despite being close to the bustling town of Ganges.
The restaurant has a very high reputation, and the food is of high quality there is no doubt. However, sometimes it is difficult to have the food prepared exactly to taste in minor details.
All in all we enjoyed our stay and would not rule out a return in the future

We just returned from our first visit to Salt Spring Island and this hotel. It is a small property on the water just outside the town of Ganges. We were in the Somerset Hillside Suite and it was amazing. Very large, well appointed and beautiful views from the bedroom and the deck. The only issue was the noise from the highway which was not as noticeable from the Manor House or the other suites on the property. We also could here the bands from the bars in Ganges at night but with the windows closed and the air conditioning on it was not an issue. If we returned we would stay either at the Post Cottage or the Farmhouse. The suite in the barn also looked amazing. Your experience starts as you check in at reception and they tour you around the property. The dining room has spectacular views and the breakfast included is very good. We did have dinner there one night but you have to have really deep pockets as it was one of the most expensive dinners we have had in our travels but the location is beautiful and the food very good. We also ate at House Piccolo in Ganges which was also very good. Make sure you have a reservation as it was full on a Wednesday night, it is in a converted house. The muffins in the morning were delicious and the afternoon tea was my favorite activity. Do not miss the very bumpy and poorly marked route to Mount Maxwell. The view will literally take your breath away. It was incredible and we spent quite a while just taking it in. We also spent an afternoon on a sailing charter which was great fun but make sure you dress warmly. The town of Ganges was nice to wander around in but very touristy and busy on the weekends. We ended our trip with French fries from the new T&A food truck just on the edge of the town. My husband swears they were the best fries he had tasted in a long time. We really enjoyed our stay and I tried to convince my husband to stay a few extra days but he did not bring his golf clubs so he was in heavy withdrawal. The ferry ride to the island was also a highlight. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone.

Room Tip: I don't think you can go wrong with any room at this charming hotel.

We spend two nights at The Hastings House and were blown away by how beautiful the property is. It's really a special experience. We are not wealthy people, but it was worth every penny. There are several free standing cottages but we chose to stay in the old house, and because we added a second night we ended up staying in both suites, the Manor West and The Manor East. They are both full of character, with great views of the harbor and woodburning fireplaces. We took tea right downstairs in the living room. The restaurant is also a special treat, the food and service both being first rate. There's also nothing like a five star meal and then just right up the stairs to your room.
We took our two year old son and he just loved running around the gardens, looking at the flowers and going down to the beach to pick up shells and watch the herons. We were lucky enough to be there on a Saturday so we could go to the weekly market thats held in the town center in the spring and summer. It was so much fun! Local merchants sell arts and crafts, food and there's a playground nearby.
This is definitely a five star property and a perfect spot if you're looking for something full of character and unique.

Room Tip: There are only 12 rooms, if you call and specify what you like Kerry the manager is very helpful. T...

We got married here in 2007 and it was absolute bliss. We had a luncheon and I still dream about the lemon cake the chef specially prepared. The service was excellent, we also had a dinner here which featured local produce. Our room was filled with fresh flowers from their garden. We received fresh muffins in the morning at our doorstep. Salt spring Island is a special place for us.

Pick anywhere - sitting in your room in a high back comfy chair, feet tucked up on the ottoman near the fire; reading on an Adirondack chair on the lawn with the scent of roses wafting over you; walking through the forest trails (easy to find and traverse); walking into the tiny town of Ganges, and going to the "made or grown on the Island" market on Saturday; dining on an ambrosial meal in the lovely restaurant; having a drink with your beau in the cozy living room with a crackling fire - you will experience nothing but bliss. The views from almost any vantage point on the property, in the dining room, and in the rooms, is of sparkling sea, lazy sailboats bobbing, and evergreen-covered islands. All you hear is the lapping of the water, the breeze in the trees, birds, and bees.

From the moment you arrive, the attentiveness of the manager and staff is second to none. You would think that you were in a fine London hotel with personal concierge service. Any request, no matter how small or large, is looked after immediately, with grace and professionalism. The dining room service is equally outstanding.

I cannot recommend this Inn highly enough. My two friends from California are already planning on coming back. Don't miss this absolute jewel of a location.

Room Tip: The Manor House is great - beautiful views from your room, and you only have to go downstairs to tea...

We recently stayed at Hastings House for a few days with the Romance Package; it included the stay, champagne, massage, meals, etc. which made for a very relaxing experience. We stayed in the Sussex, which is part of the Hillside Suites. As the photos show, Hastings House is a series of various buildings on beautiful grounds overlooking the harbour at Ganges. The Hillside Suites are a newer part of Hastings House, up some stairs from the dining house, spa and reception. There is parking on both levels.

We arrived early, as pre-arranged. The staff was very welcoming and we were soon settled into the suite, which felt more like a little cottage with a living room (gas fireplace, side balcony, large window, couch, chairs, etc.), bedroom with a side view of the harbour from the very comfortable king size bed, HD flatscreen TV, lots of room for clothes and other storage and a large bathroom with huge tub and separate shower. It’s sort of open concept so feels large. It was warm and cozy which was appreciated as it was raining during our stay. It was very quiet and peaceful in our room and we didn’t hear noise from other guests. There’s a nespresso machine that uses the little coffee packages in filters and a small fridge with creamers supplied.

Looking out the large windows, there were some beautiful trees; Douglas firs, Western Red cedars, Balsam firs and Arbutus trees. The grounds were gorgeous with trails and sculptures.

The staff was very friendly, down-to-earth and accommodating. This really added to the enjoyment of our stay. People took pride in their work and would often ask if anything was needed. We really enjoyed the massage.

I’d definitely recommend Hastings House and would return.
