“Salt Spring - Magic Lamp Cabin on St. Mary Lake”
Reviewed 21 May 2014 for a stay in May 2014

My wife, son and I stayed for 2 nights, The outside of the cabin and the inside of the cabin was full of spiders and their spider webs and huge ants. When we told them about the spiders and their spider webs, they gave us some organic cleaner and paper so we could clean the inside of the cabin instead of offering to clean it themselves which I believe should have been done before we arrived. The entire place was not cleaned well at all and fortunately we brought our own linen - I would not want to use what they provided.

The TV had 1 channel that worked for about 5 minutes and then would not work at all. The shower was terrible in terms of the water pressure. I went to ask them about the TV on the 2nd night and found out that they had left for Vancouver because the wife had found a job in Mexico. We knew nothing about them leaving!

As explained in the other review, the cabin is behind the main house which means you had to walk by their home to go to the lake to use the dock and/or the canoe. The life jackets were dirty and also full of spider webs and spiders. This was very unpleasant, unexpected and disgusting. The life jackets were very small and could barely fit my 14 year old son and my wife.

Overall, I would not recommend staying at the Magic Lamp Cabin on St. Mary Lake.

Thank you for your feed back, I like to let you know that I did not appreciated the way the cabin was left, I am at the moment putting a complaint with flipkey as you left dog urine all over the bathroom and kitchen. I recommend you don't go to the country side if you do not want to see spiders. Tania Aguila

“Beautiful lake-side location for your Salt Spring get-away”
Reviewed 3 September 2013 for a stay in August 2013

We had a wonderful time staying at this guesthouse on Salt Spring Island. The location is on beautiful St.Mary's Lake which is tranquil, quiet (no motor boats!) and lovely. Our 2 young daughters learned to fish on the dock and we enjoyed the view across the lake to a tree-covered hill. It was a bonus that we could bring our Labrador who swam with the kids in the lake. The location was perfect for our family get-away from busy schedules. Tania and Jose were gracious hosts and maintained a nice balance of giving us privacy and being available to provide recommendations.

That being said, there were a few "surprises" based on what we expected from the description on TripAdvisor and we think these are worth noting to manage expectations of future guests. First, the cabin is behind the main house and is more like a guesthouse vs. stand-alone cabin, so it is not totally private. Several of the amenities are actually part of the main house (hot tub, washer/dryer) -- not a big deal, but different from what description might lead you to believe. Second, being on a sensitive septic system there were some issues with the water that we didn't anticipate. Water was provided in jugs for drinking and washing dishes which was a slight inconvenience, but Jose was diligent about providing fresh water when we needed it. More unexpected for us was that we couldn't flush toilet paper--again, not a big deal if you know ahead of time. Although the indoor space was a little tight for our family of 4, the overall location, french doors onto the deck and beautiful weather more than compensated. It would be perfect for 2.

Overall, the experience was wonderful and the location more than overcame any disappointment related to missed expectations. We would recommend a stay at the Magic Lamp for a quiet, tranquil vacation at a beautiful lake-side location.

Thank you so much for the review and we are so sorry that the day you arrived we had our pump crashed and we had no way to anticipate that problem. We did offer your husband a free night stay to ease the inconvenience that you experience as we do understand it was not good. We again apologize and extend the invitation to come back again, we are also learning in the process. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about the septic system as all the properties on the island are on a septic system, unless the whole island changes to a different system there is nothing we can do but to be conscientious about it. Thank you once again, and we hope to see you back! Tania & Jose
