“Good value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 October 2011

The room was clean, great location close to town and on the water. Got a good rate (shoulder season) for a pretty big room (one queen bed and two single beds for about $80).
Great selection of teas and hot choc complimentary as is wireless internet. Would definitely stay there again.

This was a great place to stay. Our room very clean, comfortable bed and we had a great view from our balcony, friendly staff. We also tried out the pub and restaurant. Friday night was 2 for one appies- great deal and good pub food. We enjoyed out breakfast the next morning in the restaurant - another tasty meal. Views from the pub and restaurants are beautiful. Staff was friendly and service was good. The hockey game was on so we decided to do another dinner at the pub, steak and prawns- excellent! I have to go to Tofino again for work, I will stay here again. Great Value , very pleasent environment.

Room Tip: upgrades are reasonable and give you a better view.

Checking out the view from the top of the hill is pretty awesome! Overlooking snow capped mtns that shoot out of the ocean into these small islands is exactly what we come to tofino for. All the wild life on the docks and eagles trying to score some fresh fish, is all part of why we come to the weigh west. Sitting in the pub that is the seating for all the action on the docks is where I like to kick back. Regular blue collared pub where you dont have to get dressed up for whatever reason you can think of, but a place to enjoy the easy going attitude of tofino. Good easy menu with good pub favorites, adds to the music scene they have going there. Local talent is always a way to catch a glimpse of what type of culture lies here. All in all good solid place to enjoy some good company and easy going times.

My wife & myself stayed at this hotel for two nights. On arrival the first receptionist was very pleasant however, a customer returned & we were handed to the second receptionist who was slightly indifferent to us. My wife had booked a bear watching trip the following day that required an early start. We asked the receptionist how long it would take to reach the departure point. The receptionist was unsure of the location & asked if was a company that she named which was about 75 meters from the hotel. When provided with the name of the charter company that was different to the name provided we were told that she did not know of either the company or the location. No attempt was made to assist us. I took a local map from the reception & resolved the matter.

The reception is a building set off the main road. Once allocated your room you leave through a rear doorway. There is a concrete road ( steep slope) to the accommodation. Be warned this is quite a steep slope, we were not offered any assistance. The accommodation is entered by a stairway leading to two levels.

Should you have any difficulty with walking, steps, or heavy luggage then to locate your room may prove a challenge.

We were allocated Room 76 it was quite basic. Interestingly the room contained a microwave oven however, apart from the coffee making facility there was no cutlery, crockery or food washing or preparation surfaces.

The balcony furniture comprised of two up-turned faded green plastic chairs & a plastic table. At the far end of the road (slope) is a bar/restaurant and working dock area. People working in this area had parked their pick-up trucks under our balcony below. Until the bar quietened there was several vehicles coming & going below our room.

There was only one collapsible luggage holder in the room with no space to rest the second suitcase. The room furniture was adequate & the bed was comfortable.

On our final evening the toilet blocked. We reported it to reception who called an emergency plumber. two hours later just before the reception closed I initiated alternative toilet arrangements as the plumber had not arrived. We were provided with a key to an empty room above. When we departed early the next morning the plumber had still not arrived. As all the rooms in our corridor were occupied we were fortunate that there was a vacant room above to visit.

I would consider this to be an average hotel, there are a large number in and around Tofino it may prudent to check other reviews to ensure that you obtain best value.

At the waterfront behind the hotel there is an excellent restaurant located on a jetty with fantastic views across the river and harbour. Look at the menu on a daily for the 'special' offer, we had the ribs that were excellent & very good value.

Since we couldn't camp at the Pacific Rim National Preserve, we ended up searching for a motel on an unseasonably warm Friday night here in Tofino. Ended up here as many other places were full and I didn't want to spend $200 to $300 at an oceanside resort for just one night. To be fair, we were offered a walk-in rate of under $100, but we declined as they said the room might smell of smoke. We definitely wanted non-smoking.

So we paid $170 for a "limited view" room. The view of the harbor could only be obtained by leaning over the balcony, which was extremely disappointing. Had we stayed in the cheaper room, I might have had a different opinion of this place. But I think we made a couple late-arriving surfers happy by allowing them to claim the less expensive room.

Our big problem had to do with the heat. The temperature in the room was easily over 80 degrees and, unfortunately other Canadian motels, this one had no air conditioning. Worse, there was no way to open a window without inviting hordes of bugs in since the sliding glass patio door did not have a screen. We gambled and left it wide open to draw in the night air for some time and that, combined with the fan in the room, cooled things down somewhat.

The resort is on the shore of an interesting and somewhat busy harbor with picturesque views. Also, the reggae band playing at the resort's Dockside Pub was a treat. And Tofino has a lot to offer with its beach, nature preserve, eclectic dining and all. But if we ever return, we'll make sure to have reservations somewhere else.

First, I’d like to remind everyone that you get what you pay for. Also, for those who don’t live on Vancouver Island, make sure you look at a map of the west coast before you book and you’ll see that Tofino and Ucluelet are peninsulas of land. Each community has a “harbour side” and a “wild side.” The wild side, which faces the Pacific ocean, is the expensive side and the harbour side which is also very lovely in its own calm way, is the cheaper side. The Weigh West Marine Resort faces the harbour in Tofino and looks out across Browning Passage towards Meares Island. It is a busy, interesting view but there are no wild waves or “storm watching” that everyone likes to talk about so, if that’s what you’re looking for, you’ll have to spend the extra and stay at one of the fancier hotels on the “wild side.” Having said that, the Weigh West is good value for money, especially if you can take advantage of one of their great promotions. We have stayed there numerous times. We have done the $99 special which was $99 per person per night and included a 2 hour guided kayak trip to Meares Island which was quite unforgettable and I think it even included dinner. This past weekend for our wedding anniversary we took advantage of an offer by SwarmJam and did the $85 special which included a water view suite (I believe all their rooms are water view but ask) for one night and breakfast for 2 in their restaurant, the Blue Heron. What an incredible deal in Tofino! The room was small but clean and had everything we needed including a small fridge for our wine, and a microwave. No tub, just a shower stall. The bed was comfortable, bedding was above par, and there was a little gas fireplace. The view was lovely. The hotel is older to be sure. It’s what I consider to be a “working hotel” with lots of activity, especially fishermen coming and going. The patio could have used a good scrub which I’m sure it will get next spring (it is October now and so the patios aren’t used a lot.) Smoking is allowed on all the patios and we did have smokers on one side of our room which is sooo irritating as every non-smoker knows. I feel the smokers (sorry, smokers but I used to be one too and if I can quit, so can you…) should be put in a separate wing of the resort where they only have each other to annoy with their second hand smoke and hacking morning coughing fits outside on their decks. I did mention this to the reception staff when we checked out. But, as I mentioned, smokers or not, $85 was an awesome deal we felt. If we’d spent $159 for the room, we would not have been so happy I’m sure as we could have gotten a room on the “wild side” for about $179 at Pacific Sands or even Middle Beach Lodge this time of year. But if you’re on a budget, my suggestion would be to stay at the Weigh West and then have a long walk on Chesterman Beach to get your fill of the whole “wild surf” experience. Either that or dine at the Wickininish Inn which will literally set you back for dinner what the Weigh West will cost you for overnight accommodation! But remember what I said, you get what you pay for so don’t expect the less expensive hotels on the quiet harbour side of the peninsula to provide the same standard of accommodation – they are two different animals. One advantage of the Weigh West is that it’s an easy walk into the village of Tofino where gift shops and cafes abound. Whereas, if you stay at any of the more upscale wild side resorts, you’ll need to take your car wherever you go. The restaurant at the Weigh West (the Blue Heron) is really good – we’ve never had a bad meal there and we’ve eaten there many times. Again, not fancy but good value for money, friendly service, and a very pretty outlook over the harbour where there’s always something going on. So before you book at the Weigh West, look at a map, then call the reception desk and see what specials they are offering – as long as you can take advantage of a good special or package, I don't think most people would be disappointed.

Room Tip: If a bathtub is important to you, ask for a room with one. Ditto for a kitchenette.
