The property this lodge is on is beautiful.

We stayed in a triplex cabin which had one bedroom, a loft with bed, and a pull out couch, we were in cabin #50. This cabin is up on a cliff with ocean views. It is not beach front. The cabin was clean. This particular cabin looks directly into the cabin next to you and did not have a hot tub on the patio like the one next to it.

My only complaints are that we were told that when we got to the room there would be a doggie package (towels, poop bag, and cookies) for our two dogs and there wasn't, I had to go back to the main desk and ask for it.

I also called and emailed ahead of time to find out what appliances were in the kitchen, I was told there would be a hot plate, microwave, small fridge, toaster, and a toaster oven as well as cutlery, utensils, pots pans etc. This is all true except that there isn't a toaster or a toaster oven, so all the food we had brought to make in the toaster oven went to waste.

Positives:
Complimentary continental breakfast between 8-10am and cookies around 8pm is they aren't serving dinner that day.

Overall I would try staying somewhere else next time.

Room Tip: Cabin 50 is a lower suite and it can be noisy depending on who you have upstairs

MBL_Manager, Manager at Middle Beach Lodge, responded to this reviewResponded 15 April 2013

Dear CWfromVIC,

Thank you for taking the time to review your past experience at Middle Beach Lodge in beautiful Tofino, British Columbia. It is unfortunate to learn that Middle Beach Lodge did not meet up to your accommodation expectations.

Each issue you have addressed will be reviewed by the appropriate department manager, who will make sure that these issues are corrected.

When booking a unit we do explain to guests which units are ocean views and which units are partial ocean views. Guests do have the option to specifically request ocean views and can even ask our front desk staff which units have the nicest views. None of our units have hot tubs, however, our Deluxe Cabins and our Single Cabins all come with Jacuzzi Tubs on the decks, and again these can be requested at the time of the booking.

We apologize for the misinformation about the toaster oven in your unit. Guests can request toasters from the front desk and units that have full kitchens do come with ovens.

We truly apologize that we did not meet your expectations, and our hope is that if you were to stay with us again, we could show you an exceptional experience which is truly the Middle Beach Lodge Experience.

Sincerely,

Markus McRurie
Manager

Booked a room at the beach lodge in March at a very good rate. When we arrived the room was pretty spartan, small and rustic. I think it would be fine for the price and for a basic place to sleep but my wife's bags basically filled what little room there was. The view was fabulous. After about two hours we talked to the receptionist and they had the Honeymoon Suite available and gave it to us for the off-season rate. This was at the lodge on the point and above the main lodge building. Again, it's spartan and rustic but the view was incredible, fabulous bed, balcony with a spectacular view, on-suite ...even got some champagne and chocolates for our anniversary. You would have to look long and hard and spend a lot more than we did to beat this set up. The lodge is very laid back and infomal as opposed to the Wicaninish up the road. Oh ya, nice breakfast included and coffee, fruit and muffins/ cookies all day. Sooooo quiet. One of the best weekends ever. The area speaks for itself and is incomparable....words don't do it.

Room Tip: This place isn't for the Holiday Inn crowd.

We stayed at the Middle Beach Lodge during March 2013 and greatly enjoyed our stay. The drive into the Tofino area is quite the experience for 1st time visitors - take your time, you are travelling a mountain road with many twists and turns. The Lodge is well appointed but the rooms are not large. The great room is ideal for storm watching and getting acquainted with other guests. Always book the on-site dinner is great and should not be missed. Staff are friendly, courteous and conscientious - a joy to be so greeted upon arrival after a long day touring or upon arrival from the drive in from Port Alberni.

Room Tip: Always confirm an ocean view room - if ground floor rooms are available this is a great addition to...

If you are looking for cozy, homey, rustic, great scenery and beach access, Middle Beach Lodge is a good bet. However, if you are looking for polished, new, great views from every room, MBL is probably not a great fit for you.
I have stayed at Middle Beach Lodge on several different occasions and in several different types of their rooms and cabins. My latest trip, Mid-March, came as a deal from Facebook for a low-cost two-night stay in one of the "Lodge at the Beach" hotel-style rooms.
My sister and I made the long but beautiful drive up to Tofino during this Spring Break week, hoping for a few days of quiet, rest and relaxation. We registered in the smaller of the two Lodges and checked out our room. We had one of the last rooms to be booked (I know this, because I did check for any and all upgrades we could've made several times before arriving, but they were full due to Spring Break), a small, forest-facing room with two single beds, tiny sink in the bedroom, no TV and no closet or place at all to put our luggage.
I've stayed in one of these rooms before, they are comfy and cozy, with soft, clean linens and blankets and the bathrooms are always clean.
However, these type of room feel so very small. Especially for two people sharing the space.
Our bathroom door dragged on the carpet, causing us to use extra force just to open it, and the most disappointing part of our accommodations was that my twin bed was not built properly for it's frame and every time I sat on it or laid down on it, a corner would come off the frame and fall through, hitting the floor! I had to continually fix the box-springs and mattress so they sat on the wooden frame and gingerly and precariously sit or sleep. Not at all as relaxing as I had hoped my stay would be.
Yes, I did let the front desk know of the non-fitting bed/frame issue, and yes I asked for someone to please fix or look at the bed, that this was a very annoying issue. The friendly gal at the Lodge at the Beach front Desk agreed it would be looked at when housekeeping came around on our second day. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, nothing was ever done and for our second night, my bed again was falling at every small move I made sitting or laying down! I ended up shoving a pillow down the back of the bed against the wall and that seemed to alleviate the issue for a while. I sincerely hope they fix that bed and not ignore their customers with such a serious issue. (Heaven help the elderly person who sleeps on that bed and falls right out onto the floor someday!)

The rest of our stay was enjoyable and mostly entertaining.
A racoon (or some other beast) dragged our cooler bag off into the bushes when we left it out on our raised ground-floor balcony overnight to keep our drinks cold (since there was no mini fridge in our tiny room.) It was recovered with only small bite marks as damage.
Our first night (a Monday) was spent driving around trying to find an open restaurant after 5 pm for supper. The ONLY place we found was a newly renovated cafe on a pier that Middle Beach had given up coupons to. The only good thing I can say about the meal we ate was the tiny portion of coleslaw was amazing! The service, the fish & chips, the lack of continued service and the staff attitude were horrible! We will make sure to steer anyone we know away from that place! (Greenroom Diner) We actually warned some new customers as we left that the food and service were awful!
The second day we found a wonderful place for a late lunch, the Sea Shanty Restaurant! A++
Middle Beach Lodge did not have any dinners available on the nights we were staying. They did offer a lovely continental breakfast in their two lodges. Mostly grain-based: cereals, fresh croissants, cinnamon rolls, bagels, toast, muffins, as well as hard boiled eggs and fruit juices, and a small selection of fruit. My only sad moment for the two breakfasts we attended was that upon arriving a half hour before the slated end of the breakfast, most of the food was gone and not replenished at all. No eggs, no more fresh pastries!
They also have a self-serve coffee, tea and hot chocolate station available all day, and fresh cookies at 8 pm (although I noticed the cookies have been reduced in size by about half from the last time we stayed).

Other of the rooms are MBL are quite lovely. The cabins are a must stay if you have more than 2 people. But I would try and avoid the tiny Lodge at the Beach rooms if possible.

I would stay at MBL again, since they seems to be in the mid-range for price for any of the beach-front resorts and do offer some breakfast and one or two fancy dinners over the week.
I just regret that our stay was not a spectacular as it could have been.

Room Tip: Do not stay in the Lodge at the Beach unless no other option. Cabins are amazing!

Stayed at Middle Beach Lodge during the Whale Festival last week and got a smoking deal at $110 tax included. Had a lodge room which is up one flight of stairs in the main lodge. As it was storming didn't miss a full balcony - this room had a stand up balcony - good for keeping wine cold and for fresh air. The lodge contains the front desk registration, the great room and the restaurant which is so very convenient. Enjoyed the wood fire with other guests when Tofino's power went out for a few hours - nobody missed a beat as we were all reading, playing cards and scrabble anyway. Really fantastic. Being in the lodge meant one wakes up to the smell of cinnamon buns which are baked for the breakfast (included). Breakfast also included cereals, yogurt, eggs, toast and other baked goods. Non-alcoholic beverages and fruit served all day. Trails to two different beaches; rain gear, books and movies if you need. Relaxed and comfortable setting for solo travellers, couples or groups. Highly recommend Middle Beach Lodge!

The cost was reasonable because our booking was part of a group rate. For 2 nights we stayed in cabin 36, with a peek-a-boo view, a well-stocked kitchenette (even olive oil!) and the most comfortable beds we've ever slept in. We liked the natural vegetation and that we could watch the birds from our balcony which was close to the trees. We enjoyed watching the full moon and listening to the waves. We weren't ready to leave and, since our cabin was booked, we spent the third night in room 40 (on the lower floor) with the balcony overlooking the ocean. One of us slept on the pullout bed, which proved to be very comfortable. There was some noise from a person walking overhead but it didn't last. A lot of thought has gone into building this resort without carving up the land. We love the way the builders have used recycled materials as much as possible, including old hardwood and doors from the old steamships. We'll be back, for sure!

Room Tip: Our cabin 36 included a loft which required climbing a long, steep ladder. This could present a pro...
