“Perfect for us, but not for everyone”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 March 2010

We have made an annual trip to Middle Beach Lodge for over fifteen years. No surprise then that it's one of our favourite places. When we read the few negative reviews, we can only assume that these people should not have chosen to stay at Middle Beach in the first place. Here's a guideline: If you prefer formal to casual/informal, don't go to Middle Beach. If you place an emphasis on uber-cleanliness and a lot of service, don't stay there. If you prefer urban-type accommodation, even in a stunningly beautiful national park, don't go. If you don't like comfy, casual, country chic, don't go. If you travel with a lot of baggage and expect a spacious bedroom, don't go. If you expect something other than a yummy continental breakfast buffet, don't go. We have had nothing but wonderful experiences at Middle Beach, from the world-class location and views, the beautiful lodge and cabins, the friendly staff, the delicious breakfast--but most of all for the welcoming and relaxing ambience. Read all the ever-so-positive reviews and decided if this is the place for you. And if it isn't, for heaven's sake, stay away.

This was our third stay at Middle Beach, and it was just as good as the other two times. We have stayed in a number of different rooms/configurations and they are all good, but really liked staying in the main lodge this year. We made ample use of the great room for reading, crib, glass of wine and just r&r. It is clearly a lodge atmosphere, so not big on frills~just comfort. We had dinner on Saturday night, and I would have to say it was mediocre, served up buffet style, which didn't really work for me and at the price could have been either plated or some other way to serve..perhaps salad plates?? The other small issue is lighting..need to upgrade bathroom lighting or provide makeup mirrors...all just very minor suggestions to an otherwise lovely, relaxing place to get away from it all. Our thanks to staff, especially Darren, for making us feel very welcome upon our return...we will be back!!

My significant other and I just returned from two nights at the 'lodge at the beach' at Middle Beach Lodge and had a wonderful time.

When we arrived on the Friday evening, we were welcomed by the smell of freshly baked cookies and mugs of steaming tea which we enjoyed on the over-stuffed couches in front of a roaring fire...it doesn't get more cozy than that. Our room was small but perfect since we wanted to spend our time strolling the beach or lounging in the comfort of the Great Room.

We thought the Lodge was very tastefully decorated and the staff were very kind and helpful. Dinner at the main lodge was fantastic and well organised.

We would highly recommend Middle Beach Lodge as THE place to stay while visiting Tofino. We enjoyed it so much, we're going to come back and get married.

February 2010 was our third visit to Middle Beach Lodge. There are two sections - one is called “Lodge at the Beach”, a hotel style lodge (for adults only); the other is called “Lodge at the Headlands” which offers lodge style rooms plus sixplex suites or triplex, duplex and single cabins (their website shows view locations well). The first year we stayed in a sixplex suite and it was well suited for 3 people with separate bedroom plus pull out sofa in livingroom. We had 2 couples staying another year in duplex cabin #52 with separate bedroom + ladder loft with two single beds ... great sunsets. The same 2 couples just got back from staying in single cabin #56. Single cabins 57 & 58 look down the beach whereas 56 looks straight out to the water and rocks. The weather was stormy with rain and high winds which whipped up the waves spraying their white tops back like horse’s manes and then crashed against the rocks ... it was fantastically beautiful (and provided adrenalin rushes for some experienced surfers). The lodge lends out yellow rain jackets and rubber boots, as well as movies and music for the provided cd player. We stayed 3 nights and on the morning of our departure the sun broke through and our beach walk was warm and Springlike.
Their breakfast buffet is simple and substantial. Complimentary coffee, tea & hot chocolate are available at all times. Some nights the lodge offers dinner (around $35 per person) but there is a fully equipped kitchen in the cabins so you can come prepared or go grocery shopping in nearby Tofino. On nights when they are not serving dinner at the lodge, they offer complimentary (and very yummy) cookies at 8pm.
We have scouted out other lodges (some more expensive) in the area. They are nice but lacking in the cozy, comfortable ambience of Middle Beach. The lodge has never seemed overcrowded and it is a pleasure to hang-out in the great-room with its large fireplace and three walls of windows (something we don’t often do in other hotels).
Middle Beach lodge sits on a rock outcrops dotted with evergreen trees which seem just right for bald eagles. Paths lead down to sandy bays.
Rooms are clean. Staff is friendly and ready to help from long time General Manager Duane Bell to room attendants and kitchen staff. In answer to the mosquito comment ... during the three times we have been there, we have not seen one since ocean breezes are not usually to their liking. Go and enjoy.

I loved the Beach House (in one of the deluxe sixplex suites) - all was very clean and staff were very helpful. If I stayed again, I would choose the end unit either 61 or the one above which had the extra side window to facilitate the fabulous view. The only thing that could be better would be improved closet space. We were only there for the weekend, but if you were there for more days - little hard just with two hangers (we did ask for more and they came right away). However perhaps some thought could be given to putting a small rail up - where the hooks where in the bedroom (in the recessed area) which would it way better for longer stays.

Location:

Middle Beach Lodge is located off the main road into Tofino and is a few minutes drive from the town's main street. It's set well back from the main road and the two buildings are set between Mackenzie Beach and Middle Beach, with easy access to both beaches from the hotel. There is also plentiful free parking available.

Rooms:

We stayed in room 23 in the 'Lodge at the Beach' property, which had a standing balcony and a partial ocean view. The room was small, however, this was made clear to us when we booked the room and as we were only there for 3 nights it was more than satisfactory. The rooms are sparsely furnished, with only a dresser unit with drawers and some pegs on the wall to store belongings, which I imagine is to make them seem less crowded due to their small size. In this spirit, items such as hair dryers and alarm clocks aren't automatically included in the rooms but are available if requested at reception.

Mosquitoes are a bit of a problem and the balcony doors should be kept closed in the evenings - evidence of other guests not doing this is apparent with the marks from squished bugs on the walls. They have been cleaned off, but have left a mark that only repainting will fix and I understand that this isn't feasible every time someone kills an insect!

Despite the small bedroom the bathroom was a reasonable size and had good quality toiletries. The room was clean, however, the house keeping was little hit and miss, for example, our bathmat was removed with the dirty towels on the first day and was not replaced for the duration of our stay.

Facilities:

The small size of the room is offset by the charming living room area downstairs in the lodge, which had plenty of comfortable seating and free tea, coffee and hot chocolate available through out the day along with fresh cookies in the evening. The lodge at the beach is adult only, which makes the public areas quiet and a pleasant place to read with a cup of coffee, or just for somewhere to sit and admire the splendid views!

The lodge also has a laundry room which had a washing machine and tumble dryer. Each was a dollar per load to use and washing powder could be purchased at reception for another dollar. The machines were very clean and came in very useful as we were staying there mid way through a two week holiday.

Food:

We only had breakfast at the hotel as their dinner menu was limited and there was a wide selection of restaurants available in Tofino. The breakfast was continental style with muffins, croissants, bread, cereal, hard boiled eggs, juice, tea and coffee. The food was off good quality and in plentiful supply even at the busiest times. Any muffins remaining from breakfast were also left out to be polished off later in the day if desired.

Value for money:

As other reviewers have noted, this is a lodge, not a full service hotel and if you can forgive the in-experienced staff, it is a charming place to stay and the positives definitely out weigh the negatives. As we were staying in one of the smaller rooms, we paid $155 CAD plus tax per night in peak season, and I felt this was good value, especially considering rates other hotels in the area charge, and I would definitely return here should I find myself back in Tofino.
