Aug 2013 - had an excellent day charter fishing with the Hymax - Greg and his crew (Daniel) knew exactly where to put us on the fish. Approximately 1 hour travel out of Tofino, started trolling and we were straight into the salmon (up to 20 pounders) and great fighters. We had so much action we struggled to get all the rods out!
Had about 5 hours fishing and an hour each way for total of 7 hours. You pay by the hour and this was about right for most of our party. The boat was great, works out about the same value as boat fishing from the UK, but much better fishing. We kept about a third of the fish we caught - see photo.
We were a party of 7 (4 adults, two teenagers and my 9 year old daughter) and all caught many times. Three of the adults and my daughter had never boat fished before and loved it. We went for the Hymax as it could handle the numbers, and the girls insisted on a boat with a loo for some reason!!
Towards the end of the day we stopped trolling for the salmon and laid up to bottom fish for halibut, again straight into the fish. On the way out we dropped a crab pot and picked it back up on the way in, with several keepers - just like 'Deadliest Catch' (well almost).
Once we were back at the dock Greg cleaned the fish and helped with arranging packaging with the Trilogy Fish Merchants - they freeze packaged 5 of the salmon and one of the halibut, crated it in a polystyrene case and total weight came to 19kg, allowing us to bring it home. We also had some of the salmon smoked. The freezing lasted until we got home (approx 48hrs) and tastes great. No hassles at all with the airline and well within limit you can bring back.
We also had some fresh salmon and halibut whilst we were there from our catch - 8 mins on the barbie and tasted fantastic.
Would suggest you go early in your stay, or at least three to four days before you leave to give time for the fish to be prepared if you're bringing it home.
Greg and Daniel - really nice people enjoying what they do - if you fancy a boat fishing trip when in Tofino I highly recommend these guys. If you're a smaller party, Greg has a another boat in operation. I've boat fished many times and it doesn't come much better than this, especially if your taking first timers who just want a great day out.
