We researched lots of Tofino accommodations alternatives on TripAdvisor and called Ocean Village Beach Resort to see what they were offering. We were given a special shoulder-season rate for three nights. In order to meet our budget, we chose a second floor studio suite that was off the beach but still had a great ocean view. We greatly appreciated the full kitchen, since we alternated going out for meals with eating in, thoroughly enjoying cooking some locally caught halibut and grilling some lamb chops on the outdoor BBQ. While it was true that the bath fixtures were a bit old, though clean and in good working order, the queen bed was very comfortable. These are older units, in an older style, but very well maintained. Though Tofino doesn't have that many hot days, we came during an unusually warm week in June. The suites have no air conditioning, so some afternoons were quite warm indoors. All Tofino evenings cool off nicely, however, so sleeping was fine. It was great being lulled to sleep by the surf.

Location and oreintation could not be better - directly on Mackenzie Beach. One of the few places in Tofino with a pool (indoor/unsupervised) which is great when you are travelling with kids. About the same price as basic hotel room at Best Western next door but provides better value as all units have kitchenette and there is the pool and laundry. With exception of a couple of larger units right on the beach all the units are virtually the same - property consists of 2 unit (upper & lower) "beehive" cottages.

Layout is the same - walk into sleeping area with bathroom, then through to the living area with kitchette, dining table & 2 built in sofas which double as 2 single beds. Although there may be units in front, all units have a view of beach. Upper units differ only in that there is only a half wall between the sleeping & living areas, the ceiling is sloped and have small balcony instead of walkout. Personally I prefer lower units since I like the direct walkout and is easier to unload/load car as don't have stairs to contend with. When travelling with a group, the lower unit usually tends to be the place everybody congregates.

If you are looking for luxury - this is not the place. Units and furnishing are very basic and in my opinion the bathrooms could do with an update. There are no phones, TVs, radios etc.

All the same we will return. We try to escape to Tofino at least once a year and it is always on the list of places to visit when we have out of town visitors. Most times we stay at the Ocean Village Resort as we feel it provides the best value in Tofino especially when travelling with kids. Truly Northwest coast and get away from the hectic connected lives we live.

I am sitting at our table inside my beach front cottage at Ocean Village Beach Resort. The view is in every way perfect! The gentle crash of one foot waves lap upon the shore as people stroll the beach looking for shells, and other tiny treasures. There are about seven little rock and tree studded islands in the distance where the occasional sea lion swims between.... Remember this is all from my window....My husband is on the small railed porch reading a book.
So, onto the actual review of O.V.B. Resort... It is a simple place with individual cottages and duplex cottages. the arcatecture of the buildings themselves are so wonderful, with arched roofs and ceilings made of wood. The decor is simple, clean and friendly. the kitchenette is bare bones simple, but you have all you need, and if you don't have something you can always ask the owners they have helped us out many times....but for the three of us (two adults and a 2 year old)is is perfect for some eat in meals....There is a small bathroom, which was very clean upon arrival. There are two small sofas, that can be turned into beds in the living area. No t.v or phones but there is high speed internet and cell phone service...We were surpised that there is only towel exchange not an actual maid service every day. Although I have the feeling that if we asked, they would change the sheets. We never found it necessary though. The property of O.V.B. Resort is very tidy, lots of lawns to stroll, run, sun and play, indoor pool, laundry and all just steps from the beautiful beach!!!
Tofino is a very small town, very small. It is very enviromentally friendly, food concious, organic, and even low waste. We found that choosing to stay at the coffee shop instead of the usual "togo"
was looked upon as much more favorable than using a paper cup.... You can stay very busy or be very lazy in Tofino. read, sleep, surf, go on a bear tour via boat , stroll the beach at low tide, rent bikes and bike along the bike path into town or to other beaches.... Needless to say Ocean Village Beach Resort is well worth the trip!

If you are used to luxury and want a luxurious experience, this is not your place. However (and it's a big however), if you can step back and enjoy the zeitgeist, you will truly enjoy it.

After staying in some 4 and 5 star hotels right beforehand, our immediate reaction was dismay when we arrived at Ocean Village; HOWEVER, by the time our 3-day stay ended, we did not want to leave. First, the cons: It does not appear to have been updated in many years, the bed and linens are very basic, the kitchen is only serviceable, and there is no apparent maid service (other than a daily drop-off of towels). Plus, for being in a location that trades on its eco-tourist credentials, I was shocked to find TP and toiletries that were not "green", which just seems like a touch you would expect here. HOWEVER (again, with that word), the pros are that this is a wonderful place to take your family and just enjoy the beautiful location and the EXTREMELY friendly and welcoming people who stay here. It feels like either a camp for families or a vacation from the 1950s and, by the time this registered and the mantra set in, I realized that was actually a great thing.

There was no phone or TV (surprising these days, but a huge plus when you're trying to get away from it all), BUT there was free internet access, so you could research activities, restaurants, etc. from the comfort of your own room. Plus, we really came to enjoy the getting away from it all vibe and the fantastic view out our living room window. In addition, if you have kids or are traveling with other families who have kids, I really can't think of a better place to stay. Kids LOVE it here. All the kids seem to be out playing on the lawns or beach during the long summer nights and I can't think of a more fantastic experience for the kids or their families. This is the sort of place that will definitely give a kid positive and happy memories. We were immediately thinking of bringing our 1.5 year old back in a few years when she's better able to explore the glorious scenery in Tofino.

we just returned from a two night stay at ocean village...we had a great time!!! our itinerary was for some quiet r&r and thats what we got..... we rented a one bedroom ocean front cottage, they are very simple but very cozy. they have kitchenettes so you can bring your own food or dine out at one of the local restaurants. first of all booking was easy, so was check in. the cottage was clean and with a perfect view of the ocean. its storm season right now and mother nature did not disappoint!!! for food we decided to bring light snacks etc. but had dinner the first night at the best western that is right next door. the power did go out but the best western has a generator to power their restaurant..my advice is make sure you take a flashlight with you!! the best western is a little pricey but good food, we also dined there for breakfast and it was really good...the second night we chose to dine at the "weigh west" restaurant and it was great service, fantastic food with a great view. i have three pieces of advice for this location...when you check in ask for extra coffee packets for your coffee maker (they only leave one in the cottage), bring an insulated coffee mug if you want to enjoy a hot beverage on the beach, and most important don't forget your camera!!!!

Location and accomodations are good. The property is right on the beach. The resort is not run professionally however. 1.) Front desk was not personable at the time of check in or otherwise. 2.) Wi-fi advertised on their website is hit or miss. When the office was approached, they refused to believe or even investigate the possibility of a problem. There are only 2 access points and the one located by the pool is constantly down. Staff was not amiable to checking the APs. Beware of this if you are staying in one of the waterfront cottages. The best thing to do is to piggyback onto the resort next door's connection. 3.) Personnel operate more with warnings and threats versus hospitality and welcoming, stating things like, "10pm pool closing is strictly enforced."

Bottom Line: Not worth the nightly rate. There are many other waterfront resorts that offer the same location and better accomodations, and possibly a little bit of kindness and cheer as well.

Just returned after 4 days of "peak season" vacationing, but with all of the space, local activites and ability to just sit on the sand and decompress with the kids - it's an easy 5 out of 5.

Top three things:
Location #1 - their beach/water access is one of the better of all of the local resorts (we drove around and looked to see what others had to offer).
and
Location #2 - its Tofino and the Pacific Rim park is right there (Schooner Cove is a must see - be sure to stop and take in the smells and sounds too)
and
Location #3 - the wife is a "born and bred NYC girl" and to have a "get away from it all" vacation and still have an immaculately clean room with a shower, flush toilets, dishwasher and gas stove is just shy of the "H" chain of hotels. Put it this way the bleach smell on the bed linens was almost overpowering, but to parents this was very refreshing/comforting.

The only bad thing
Location - it takes about 11 hours from Seattle with Hwy 4 construction and the superb effort by the rocket scientists protecting our mutual nations' border.

*Tip* - Bring your own food (dry or canned goods) - it was almost $7 CDN at the Tofino CO-OP for a pack of Hot Dogs weiners or you could stop in Port Alberni with a cooler and lots of ice. It is still Vancouver Island prices so there may be some sticker shock in Port Alberni too.
