My wife and I stayed at the L'Hermitage from 9 July to 17 July 2012 during our 8-day honeymoon in Vancouver. Upon arriving to the hotel at 1 a.m. due to a flight delay, we were greeted by Andrew (I believe, I'm not good with names) at the front desk. He checked us in very quickly, provided a map of the area, informed us about the area, and bid us good night as we went to room 714.
Our room is known as the one bedroom signature suite. The room has a full kitchen with modern appliances directly on the left upon entering. Not only did the kitchen have appliances, it also contained silverware, dishes, pots, pans, toaster, blender, and drinking glasses. Looking ahead revealed a cozy living area with a sliding door leading to the patio. The bedroom is spacious despite a king bed. Not only was the size of the bed appealing, it was also very comfortable. Much more so than any other hotel bed I have slept on. A very valuable peace-of-mind is the cleanliness of the room. It is clean! Every surface I checked was free of dust or other unclean substances. Whether it was the top shelf of the cupboards, the corners of the three closets, or the typically risky tiled bathroom shower, it was all clean!
We visited the salt-water pool a few nights and found it to be extremely clean and tidy as well. I typically avoid hotel pools for reasons of either too many people, murky-looking water, or the presence of standing water/mold in the area. L'Hermitage's pool area was free of all of those attributes. The hot tub was a very welcome sight after our day-hikes in Stanley Park.
Services during our stay was impeccable as well. At no point were we able to sneak out of the hotel with a friendly "good morning," "hello," or " have a good day!" The conceirge proved extremely valuable during out stay, providing us with the correct bus routes, suggestings on dining, coupons for almost everything, and tips to squeeze the best value out of all the things we did. The wifi service was complimentary and worked quite well on our phones (Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Motorola Droid 2). The wifi range is a bit limited on the patio, but that was not a concern for us. L'Hermitage is most certainly top notch when it comes to service and making you feel valued.
Note that there is construction of a TELUS Garden homes and offices highrise across the street. It resulted in a direct view of construction equipment and a parking structure in the course of its demolition. Of course, this is not the fault of L'Hermitage and the city-mandated hours of construction limits noise to between 8 a.m. and approximately 6 p.m. I actually found it quite entertaining, seeing the rig-mounted jackhammers pounding away at the concrete parking structure. I'm sure that by the time of this review, the demolition of the parking structure of complete and they would be on to preparing the foundation for the highrise.
Unfortunately, the breakfast buffet did not live up to my expectations given the cost. Although the food was organic, the selection seemed minimal compared to other hotels. My "scrambled eggs" seems like they were almost pure yolk (not my thing) and the belgian waffles had to be put in a toaster prior to consumption. At first sight, it seems like a typical catering affair. My wife agrees that the breakfast is nothing special. However, the service during the breakfast was excellent.
If you plan to visit Vancouver, I recommend L'Hermitage as the place to stay. The location is very convenient for walking to the themed areas of downtown (Gastown, Yaletown, Heritage District, Stanley Park, and the Ferry to Granville). When (not if) we travel to Vancouver again, we will be sure to stay at this hotel. The staff at L'Hermitage seem almost like friends now!
