Obviously, as a shangri-la the service is excellent, the beds super comfortable, the rooms very nicely laid out and appointed. but as someone who had never been to vancouver, the location is great. it is next to the urban fare market where i could pick up picnic lunch or snacks for a day out touring. there were also endless good restaurants in the area. it is next to the coastal church which is apparently a tourist site. the set up is a little odd with the lobby being in the car park level and thus feeling very basement-y and then the street level is only a concierge and a very weirdly laid out hallway. the hall leading to the guest elevators is very narrow and barely accomodates two-wide. the rooms are very nice, spacious, well-appointed and the showers are large. the fruit is a nice touch and the breakfast being included was helpful since it was alacarte only at a jean-georges restaurant. my only complaint is how the food was charged on the bill. we had breakfast included and a $100 food credit. the breakfast included was up to $76 but we never saw an itemized bill (at the restaurant or checkout) so i never could quite tell if i spent more or not. i assumed that i was somehow getting covered by that and the food credit but i wasn't and i have no clue how it all got counted - it was so complex i think you needed the patience of a saint to work it all out. it almost made you think they did that on purpose so you wouldnt check.
there were nice modern touches in the decor but some of my travel companions wanted a little more "special" in the decor. also, just a little note on the competition: when i stay at mandarin orientals i get not only fruit but jasmine tea when i get brought to the room...i'm just sayin!
also - to the other reviewer - they may have heard you because i got an email before i arrived telling me the carpark entrance was on alberni street!
