Back in 2009, I reviewed this hotel and raved about it. The hotel had recently opened and everything was new and working to perfection.
What a difference four years makes, as the hotel is starting to show its age...although not as quickly as some others I have visited over time.
Cases in point: We stayed in a one bedroom suite, where the sofa had a rather disgusting stain on it. One of the bathroom sinks did not drain (fixed by the hotel while we were there). One of the TV remotes was partially inoperable (fixed by the hotel while were there). Treadmills in the fitness rooms did not always work completely (e.g. unable to change speeds on one, change TV channels on another). At check out time, only one of a possible two stations were manned...quite a wait to check out.
However, like four years ago, the staff remains terrific. As I have said many times, you can have a great physical plant, but if the people are poor, you might as well not open the doors. In the case of this Shangri-La, the people are great, but the physical plant is starting to wear.
And, let me repeat what I've said for some time. The CHI Spa is great. Do not miss this...even if you stay somewhere else. Quite an experience.
Thus, my overall review goes from 5-stars to 4-stars. My preference for downtown Vancouver remains the Fairmont Pacific Rim....hope to get there in a few months.
