“Shining Staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 August 2014

A six night stay in wonderful Vancouver was enhanced by great staff. With just 119 rooms, the staff are helpful, polite and ready to go beyond the call of duty. As they should and it was indeed a breath of fresh air after arriving from one of impersonal hotels in Las Vegas where money is the dominant feature and not service. The vehicular entrance to the Shangri-La does not set the world on fire. Somewhat bewildering to have it under ground level where check in is processed. Management nonetheless, have to live with the design and make it work. It does seem logical to minimize street congestion and have vehicles one level below the street. So as you scratch your head upon arrival, the service compensates from the front desk sweeps into action with a warm and genuine greeting. My wife and I were warmly welcomed by NY native Jeffrey Victor, a young enthusiastic and budding GM of the future. Nothing was too much trouble and he was delight to meet. Other staff from housekeeping who did an excellent job, to the food and beverage team were polite, efficient and happy to please. I received a phone call from Phillipe Renaud, the Sales Director and the following morning had the pleasure of meeting him at breakfast.

In the elevator as my wife and I were heading out, a formal and very professional man entered and I made a flippant comment that he looked very official. Turned out it was the GM. We chatted and exchanged business cards. Very handy when we return to Vancouver! So, in a nutshell, here is a quirky property with great staff, well positioned in the Center of Vancouver near all the shops that clearly does well under the guidance of its leader. Lastly, the concierge team led by Stefan know their "stuff" and like the reception team, one level below are the directors of first impressions. Our first impression was just what is expected of this chain. Perfect.

Room Tip: Think thin....the accommodation toilets are very narrow. Not the operators fault but the design. If...

Please note that this is only a review of the hotel. The hotel restaurant will be covered in a separate review. The hotel has an amazing location--you are in the mist of shopping, yet are close to public transportation if you want to explore further. And you can walk to so much! The ferry to Granville Island is ten minutes away, and the seaplane terminal is 15 minutes away. But what really sets this apart is the service. Stephane and Jarren are two remarkable concierge(s)-and they will make your stay a memorable one. The housekeeping staff is wonderful -as is the front desk (which is oddly a level below the lobby--that takes some getting used to, I must admit).

Room Tip: Some of the room have roomy balconies-I real plus in nice weather.

I went with my infant daughter and managed to rediscover the elixir of a good nights sleep. The view was non spectacular and the pool was a letdown, but the amenities and all the details of the room befits the shangri-la name. I esp enjoyed the tele in the bathroom mirror. The spa was excellent and restaurant is world class. It was an oasis in vancouver's downtown.

I recently spent the weekend at the hotel. This hotel is well kitted for all your needs. Having travelled around and stayed at various hotels in the deluxe category I found the hotel service to be fantastic starting from the check in till checkout. I was always addressed by my name and my needs were well catered for. Other good things about the hotel was that even though the hotel was sold out the noise level was very low. I had a very restful stay at the hotel and highly recommend it !.
The hotel is well located near restaurants, shopping and important city landmarks.

Room Tip: Try to get a deluxe king with a balcony the views are fantastic.

Recently completed 2 stays at the Shangri La. Once in an Executive Balcony King and once in an Executive Suite. Both rooms were beautiful and modern, though a bit small for 3 people. We loved the breakfast, especially the french toast and waffles. Also breakfast came with fresh juice, fruit, yogurt smoothie (most days) and warm croissant/muffins. The gym was bit small (about 12 modern machines), but otherwise fine. The check in at the lower lobby is a bit cramped, but the main lobby is much nicer. Housekeeping was very responsive to requests for towels and the like. Stephane at the conceirge's desk was terrific and very helpful.

A really nice and fine hotel. Although I have given excellent for value for money I do not know what price I paid as it was inclusive in a package tour.Even so from arriving to departure everything was excellent.

Good central location. Check in at basement level, concierge on ground floor very narrow corridor at ground level lifts..Its as if the hotel was adapted to an already existing building rather than having been built as a hotel...Room was spacious and large with a balcony. The bedside jelly sweet that doesnt taste of anything should be replaced by chocolate. Breakfast was good although there was no HP souce available but to compliment them they went and bought one from the market next door..The qualtiy and taste of the Dim Sum in the oriental breakfast very dissapointing and needs to be improved as they tasted stale and bitter.
