Fairmont is a brand I trust ( although recently tested by the Jasper Park Lodge which is stuck in the 1970's and severely needs a makeover to justify the Fairmont name and $700 a night ) and the Pacific Rim proved to reinforce why their hotels can be relied upon.
The rooms we booked were spacious and well appointed, the hotel is small enough to feel like a home from home, and everything was as you would want it to be. Modern, great views and position, the only downer was the lobby acoustics which given there was live music playing continuously in a room of marble and glass, this sent us to our rooms earlier than we would have wished each night.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on your recent stay with us. We are glad to hear you enjoyed our guestrooms, however regret to hear The Lobby Lounge did not meet your expectations. Unfortunately I am away from the office this week, however I would invite you to contact Frederic Bellone, Hotel Manager, directly at Frederic.Bellone@Fairmont.com should you wish to discuss your experience in further details. We look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the future!

Fairmont is the Canadian hotel brand. And Vancouver is Fairmont's home. There are four Fairmonts in Vancouver. The newest and best of these is the their signature hotel, the sleek Fairmont Pacific Rim.

Coal Harbor is the prettiest part of Vancouver. When you walk the waterfront from Canada Place towards Stanley Park, you might think you'd stepped into a futuristic utopian landscape. The water sparkles, the bridge glistens, the seaplanes come and go. Visitors on foot and on wheel stream the promenade. The multimillion-dollar condos overlook the multimillion-dollar yachts. Life is beautiful.

At the hub of this pristine urban marina is the Fairmont Pacific Rim. The port-a cochere sets the tone when you arrive, with a handful of Ferraris and a Rolls parked in front. At curbside the Chief Doorperson has a personal greeting for you and your room keys ready for you before you enter the building. This is the beginning of the Fairmont Gold experience. And Gold is the only way to go when you stay at the Pacific Rim.

The Pacific Rim has many marks of quality. It is crafted from fine materials - stone, wood, fabric. The lobby is all in white carrera marble. Reception, a long glass fireplace, then a comfortable open cocktail lounge with a jazz combo playing mellifluously, a sleek bar, a sweeping diagonal staircase up to the mezzanine.

The Gold Level is on the 20th, 21st, and 22nd floors, but try to get on 20 or 21 for direct access to the Gold Lounge without having to use the elevators. Your HarborView King was not the same as the one you had last year. Make sure to request one with a bathtub and a terrace facing Stanley Park. The other side also has harbor views but they face the passenger-ship terminal and Cordova Street. Those rooms are slightly larger with large showers but no tub and no terrace.

Everything about your Pacific Rim room is new and cool and made of fine materials. There's an electronic privacy indicator on your door. I-pad and Nespresso machine are provided. The drapes and sheers and all the lights and lamps are auto controlled from digital wall panels. The furniture is the definition of modern comfort. The wood wardrobe caddy and matching shoehorn and jewelry tray help to elevate your morale as you go through your day. Another stunning display of marble in the bathroom with a very cool TV built into the mirror, mood lighting, separate commode area, and lots of little amenities.

The physical plant is perfection at every turn, but the best thing about Fairmont Gold is the service. Whatever you ask for, the staff attends to it instantly. A pair of trifles or tarts are left for you each evening along with a glass bottle of mineral water. The room is turned down every evening, but housekeeping is glad to freshen your room as many times a day as you request.

Your days are naturally centered around the Gold Lounge, a graciously appointed private space with a large outdoor terrace on the 20th floor. The harbor view is spectacular! And everything here is complimentary. You're treated to delicious treats, savory and sweet, all day long, with the smorgasbord changed four times a day. Everything they serve is high quality cuisine, prepared with care, and offered in abundance, a different themed menu each day. And then there's the salmon! Take-away containers are at hand and you're encouraged to load up on the goodies. You could easily grow fat in the Gold Lounge. There are at least six or eight Gold ambassadors who work the lounge and the Gold reception desk in shifts. They are your dedicated concierges, and they also function as personal assistants, major domos, and valets. Just tell them what you want. They make it happen. Their purpose there is to service your desires. They really understand how to pamper guests and complete your Vancouver Gold experience.

The hotel has some other excellent features. There's a rooftop pool and hot tub on the sixth floor with great views of the lawn-covered Convention Center and the seaplane airport right in the middle of Coal Harbor. Get to the pool by 1 pm in time to get a lounge for the sunny hours from 1 to 5.

The spa on the fifth floor is ultra-luxurious with two more outdoor coed hot tubs and a coed thermal sauna. There are pleasant areas indoors and out to hang around in your robes and sip tea. Really nice steam room, showers and grooming areas. The service in the spa and in the locker areas and dressing rooms is personally attentive and most excellent.

The lobby bar is a popular Vancouver gathering place. There is continuous live music and a steady stream of dapper characters flowing through the premises.

The hotel maintains a fleet of finely crafted BMW bicycles at the front door with a bicycle concierge who sets you up with a ride, bike-lock, water, map, and even adjusts your seat for you, compliments of the Pacific Rim. You definitely want the bike so you can take the enchanting ride around the seaside perimeter of Stanley Park or venture further into Vancouver or to Kitsilano Beach. If you feel like some exercise you could try the ride across Lionsgate Bridge and back. (Bear in mind the bridge is closed to bikes from 3:30-6:30pm.)

And the hotel also has one or two house cars to give you a lift around the neighborhood. But it seems there is too much demand for the car to be able to rely on it when you need to be somewhere at a specific time.

While in Vancouver don't miss the Museum of Anthropology at UBC. Even a brief visit is enough to acquaint you crucially with the indigenous culture which so permeates the Vancouver landscape. A short walk from the museum is Wreck Beach, a must-visit for anyone who wants to really meet the locals and immerse in the Vancouver state of mind. And Capilano Gorge is a refreshing forray into the Canadian wilderness just minutes from downtown Vancouver. If you have a day to spend, you can go on a whale-watch, easily arranged by the Fairmont elves.

Is the Fairmont Gold at the Pacific Rim the absolute best overall hospitality experience anywhere in North America? You don't really know because you haven't been everywhere else in North America. But the Pacific Rim is very fine. And the Gold is like living in a bubble, on a cloud, far above the madding crowd, with all the personal attention and the sustenance and the conveniences, big and small, that ease the pain of modern life and constitute the difference between merely existing and truly living. You hope to stay there again . . . and again.

Room Tip: Choose a Gold level room facing Stanley Park and Lionsgate Bridge with a tub and a terrace.
