I have been going to the Vancouver Aquarium over the years with my family. Visited today and was impressed with the renovations. Lots of changes, a blend of some original exhibits, and new areas like the Penguin exhibit, the jelly fish displays through the aquarium, the cafeteria and new gift shop. We enjoyed our day.

Expensive tickets and overpriced food and beverage, overstuffed souvenir store mainly aimed for the kids with tons of toys.....small display spaces where you feel the beluga whales are really struggling to move and live in this artificial environment.. the whole place is basically for pre high school kids and school trips...not worth the trip and money.

Let's get this out right away: the Vancouver Aquarium is *not* the place to go for an affordable day trip. Peak season rates mean that a family of four is spending over $100 just to get in, if they pay full price. Plus, a day's worth of parking is another $11, if you drive.

There are ways to trim down the cost if you're visiting, though. For example, White Spot restaurants traditionally offer coupons with their kids' Pirate Paks during the summer, and usually the coupon for the last two weeks of August is a "Free Child Admission with Paid Adult" coupon. Since a child admission is $20 during peak season, it's worth it to pop into a White Spot for lunch or dinner during the last two weeks of August if you're planning a visit to the Aquarium then.

As well, the Aquarium is just steps away from the Stanley Park bus loop. So, depending on how much stuff you need to bring with you, and how many people, public transit is an option.

Our most recent visit was our first visit since the new expansion opened. From the outside, it certainly looks nice. Looking at it from the inside, the key thing to observe is that the most noticeable benefit of the expansion is the expanded gift shop. Since all revenue generated by the Aquarium goes right back into the operations of the Aquarium and its various research and conservation programmes, that's not a bad thing. The new exhibit area in the new basement is still under construction, so that will help add value to a visit in the future.

The highlights of a visit to the Aquarium remain the animals. The Aquarium has many detractors, including most recently the Vancouver Parks Board members. Looking past all of that, as a parent with kids growing up in a city on a tight budget, it is through visits to places like the Vancouver Aquarium that my kids get exposed to actual "nature" from all parts of the world. You can't recreate the value of seeing something alive in front of you for the first time, no matter how much technology you throw at it. And, getting splashed by a beluga whale is something my kids won't forget for the rest of their lives, either!

When you compare the admission prices for the Vancouver Aquarium to other such venues in Canada like Ripley's in Toronto, or Marineland in Niagara Falls, and then you factor in that all of the revenue generated by the not-for-profit Aquarium goes right back into their research projects, community outreach programs, and conservation efforts, then the Vancouver Aquarium - to me at least - is the best value.

Frankly I find most aquariums to be somewhat boring, but based on reviews we had seen, we visited the Vancouver Aquarium. I was very pleasantly surprised. There are a large number of different tanks with extremely interesting fish and the flora in which they survive. There are also a number of large pools with different species. You could easily spend hours here, and not be tired of the different presentations. It's only a short ride from downtown Vancouver, and you get to see at least part of Stanley Park at the same time. Definitely worth a visit.

Firstly it is the only aquarium which only has animals that have been bred in captivity or have been rescued which is reassuring. The space is well used and does not feel overcrowded. Really enjoyed the 4d ride which is included with your admission. The sealions, penguins, whales and dolphins are super cute and the amazon area with butterflies is well done. Would go again.
