“Boutique hotel in a great location”
Reviewed 11 August 2014

Booked based on reviews and we were delighted! After our cruise ended in Vancouver, we stayed an extra day to explore the city. Lovely furnishings, excellent service and walking distance to Stanley Park, the Roots store (for our kids) and dinner reservations. We booked 2 suites and found them to be beautiful, plush and comfortable. Brett the concierge was helpful with dinner recommendations and reservations. The front desk staff told us about events during the day. Just a nice surprise. A great finale to our family vacation.
P.S. Should have asked the best way to go from the cruise terminal to the hotel. We caught a van cab to Le Soleil and the driver complained the entire 10 minute drive that he waited in a long line at the cruise terminal expecting a fare to the airport. Was it our inexperience or a pushy van driver?

This hotel is ideally located for exploring all that downtown Vancouver has to offer, you really couldn't find a better location in my opinion. You can walk to Stanley Park, train station, main shopping district, waterfront, Gastown, and even Yaletown is about a 20-minute walk. Rooms are nice, beds comfortable, nice big TVs, nice bathroom. My room was a small suite with a small sitting area and a second large TV. Decor is nice, not super luxurious but very comfortable. Hotel has very little public space but that did not bother me. Hotel employees were outstanding. Brett the concierge was very helpful and he went out of his way to be of service to my wife and I. Other front-desk personnel were equally friendly and helpful as were the 2 bellman. For the price this a great choice as the Four Seasons, all 3 Fairmonts were much, much more expensive. Many restaurants and bars are just steps away and Starbuck is right across the street too.

Room Tip: higher floors are quieter

We booked this hotel as part of a package deal, and we were not disappointed. As soon as we entered the hotel, we were awed by the delightful adornments, and upon checking in, we were upgraded to a corner suite. Our cozy, appealing room lacked for nothing and we slept wonderfully. Each morning we went to the front desk with questions on directions and the staff was extremely helpful. One day, the gentleman took our random ideas for what we wanted to do and organized them nicely into a full-day plan. My only reservations about the hotel were the price of room service and the number of bikes they had for guest use. On occasion, I have been known to order room service, but the prices at this hotel were rather exorbitant compared to other hotels at which I have stayed in the past year. A breakfast buffet or a few more reasonably priced items on the menu would be a welcome addition! Also, the day my husband and I wanted to use the hotel bikes to explore Vancouver, we were informed that a family of three had taken three of the four bikes, and they did not offer the possibility of making a reservation for the following day. Although we later rented bikes from a shop near Granville Island, it would have been nice to use two hotel bikes for free. Overall, we had a really pleasant experience, and I would definitely recommend this hotel.

We booked this hotel on a whim and I have loved it ever since. The style is old world and completely beautiful. We booked a corner suite which included a large bathroom, separate bedroom and a living room with floor to ceiling windows. The room service is second to none. The light bulb was out on our lamp and the staff were absolutely quick and apologetic. This hotel is in the middle of everything and right across from the mall for great shopping.

Real value for your money here and we felt at home in the hotel. Haven't had a chance to check out the restaurant but we heard from music coming from it. Will be sure to try it next time.

Room Tip: Pay the extra and get a suite, you will not be disappointed!

We were looking for a great downtown hotel to get a feel of the city for the brief time we were there. This was it. We were upgraded on arrival because we were informed the room we booked was oversold. We ended up with a queen suite with amazing views of the city and a living room. The room was comfortable, clean, and felt very luxurious. The staff were very helpful and assisted with parking, bags, and checking in. Natasha at the front desk gave us a number of sushi recommendations and we had a great dinner. Valet parking was reasonable, the lobby is very nice, and we both slept comfortably. I would recommend it.

While the legal contract of this and most other hotels states rooms will be available by a certain hour in late afternoon, common sense and good business practice usually dictate that if a room in your booked category is available, earlier access is provided. From the number of guests successfully checking in during our wait, we know Le Soleil subscribes to this policy. Our wait was about four and a half hours. We were initially advised to 'have some breakfast', then, after a couple of hours 'have some lunch'. Finally, we were 'informed' there were several coffee shops in the area. The situation became a joke among other guests in the lobby.

Toward the end, sometime after 3pm, we insisted on a detailed explanation by 'our' front desk man, who stopped by our seat in the lobby on the conclusion of his shift. He stated that the problem was that there were few potentially available rooms in our category -' Deluxe King Executive Corner Suite' - a descriptive term he had repeated throughout the day. He even said there were only 5 prospective rooms in that category that day.
Now even if all 5 rooms had guests who checked out at the last moment - 12 noon - one would think that one of them could have been ready for us before 3:45. It gets worse because as it turns out, our booked room was not an 'Executive King Corner Suite' after all, but a run-of-the-mill 'Executive King', a non-suite room of which there are presumably many more. We can only conclude the desk man was searching in the wrong room category for most of our wait. Fortunately when this young man went off shift, the new person had no difficulty finding a room.

While there are several possible versions of the truth here, a common path is that in theory, housekeeping might have been asked to prioritize a room for us, regardless of category, given the many hours we waited. Either the front desk staff made no attempt, or effective attempt, to do so, or housekeepers runs the hotel and do things the way they want.
At no time were we offered a room in a different category as a way out of the dilemma.

Other concerns about the hotel include the WIFI - not consistently functional even in the lobby, and so slow otherwise as to be often useless. There isn't a formal space to park when checking in - one must stop in a taxi queue zone. There was mass confusion around the front desk when we arrived. Some elegant 'rope' to organize a queue would have helped. Water pressure in the room was lamentably weak. Vancouver is not California. The bed is quite firm - some, including us, would say hard, but this is a personal preference. The pillows were unequivocally unyielding.

There are many good things about staying at Le Soleil. With exception, the staff members are friendly and competent. The hotel decor, from lobby to hallways and rooms, is a study in the magic of excellent interior decorating. The room was very quiet, even with the excellent air conditioning at work. There is a welcome grab bar on the soaker bath tub wall. The TV was of good quality and a generous number of stations was available. Others have commented favorably on the location and the value.

We stay often in Vancouver hotels and would have enjoyed putting Le Soleil on our repeat visit list.
While we suspect most of our difficulties could be chalked up to a very inexperienced front desk person, perhaps the hotel should be investing in more training before assigning this responsibility.
So our advice to the public is this: do consider this hotel, but if you plan to arrive before the posted legal contract time, clarify your situation when booking, and don't trust the front desk on arrival to manage your interests.

Dear JacquesSpratt,

I was disappointed to read your comments and the experience you encountered while checking into the hotel. It would appear that perhaps you were wishing to check in, in the morning? If so it is very difficult to accommodate this request during the busy summer months as guests tend to stay longer in their rooms which does put a strain our housekeeping team to turn rooms around in quick order. Our check in time is 4PM, and if this was not communicated to you I do apologize. However it sounds like you encountered an issue with your actual room reservation and the room type you booked. I apologize for the miscommunication from our guest service agent and subsequent "run around" you felt you received.

Without knowing exactly who you were dealing with it is difficult for me to address the situation with the individual. I would very much like to speak with you directly and ask that you please contact me via email generalmanager@hotellesoleil.com.

We have been experiencing a slow down of our Wi-Fi the last two weeks of July but have since addressed the issues with our vendor and service has been restored. Comments regarding our bedding is a individual preference and I'm sorry that it didn't suit your comforts.

Thank you for bringing some of your issues to my attention and I look forward to speaking with you directly.

This hotel is rated as a four star but really shines in it's 5 star service. The hotel is fairly small with about 14 floors with around 10 rooms per floor. There is an on and off concierge but the front desk acts as a concierge when he is not present. The locations is quite good a block away from the Fairmont central downtown area. I would pick this hotel over a 5 star hotel every time due to the service and for a non resort hotel this is one of my favorite hotel stays anywhere.
Room:
Really nice that the living quarters and bedroom are separate. Perfect for when the family wants to go to sleep at different times like ours. Also separate AC for both sides along with sepetare TVs and fold out bed in living area.
Service:
Unbelievable. The people who work here will bend over backwards to make sure you are happy. When we needed anything they would immediately bring to the room. Restaurant reservations, room issues, whatever they were immediate, over delivered and were always nice, smiling and friendly. They were also always constantly inquiring if there was anything the could do to make our stay more enjoyable. Every single person we interacted with at the hotel was like this and really deserves pointing out.
Examples:
We had an issue with getting ripped off by the Sky Train Kiosk. Natasha at the front desk not only called them on our behalf, but when they wouldn't refund us, the hotel covered it.
The first day we had chocolates on our pillow but not after the first day. Our son asked the cleaning lady if he could get another one. When we came back that night she had put 15 chocolates in our room.
My wife asked for an extra quilt in the middle of the night. No questions just immediately brought to the door.
Many others, reservations, changing reservations and even getting us in to places that had no availability thanks to Brett's magic.
