“Hotel for our family vacation”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2014

We stayed at the Riviera Hotel for our family vacation. It is located in Vancouver's Westend and is close to all the major attractions of the city with Robson Street, Stanley Park, the beaches and the Aquarium. The room was big enough for our family and had a kitchen which we used for breakfast.

Sorry, but it was disappointed. All doors and furniture have scratches everywhere. That do not give you a good impression when you arrive with your family. Also we have booked for 6 people and the suite was quite small for us. We had to move all leaving room and pantry furniture to a corner to fit two extra beds. As well as we had ask for the full set of kitchen ware for 6 people because the suite was for 4 people.
It was not a good experience.

Rooms were a little dated, and bathroom could use an upgrade. Front counter staff were very accommodating, and the location was adequate, close to a number of restaurants and only a short walk to the CBD and east side of Stanley Park. Overall this was a good place to stay, we got our rooms at a reduced rate so the stay presented good value. At the regular price, the standard queen apartments would present questionable value. We found the staff working on the morning of our checkout (07-06-14) to be highly efficient and responsive to our needs, looking to assist us where possible.

It is as if they made one room really nice, took pictures of it, and then posted those on their website as a (mis) representation of their rooms.

Our room was on the third floor. The flooring does appear to be new (wood laminate) but the fixtures and kitchenette were very old and beat up. There was old, dried nail polish on one nightstand, the kitchen counters were scratched up and stained, and the stove was extremely old. The bathroom had one of those old shell sinks that they had sprayed with some type of granite-looking coating to 'update' it.

The doors to the rooms are thin and have no insulation around them. The hallways are very narrow. When someone arrives at their room after dancing the night away you WILL hear them as if they were coming into your room.

The wi-fi is terrible. The service is so slow that my tablet timed out several times while trying to load a webpage. So frustrating.

They have parking behind the hotel, although as we got ready to head up to our rooms another parker that had just exited his vehicle told us that we should move to the underground parking (which we didn't even know about) because our vehicle would not be safe in the parking lot overnight.

I would never pay the advertised rate of $380 for our room. We had a last minute deal from a third party website, which was the only thing that saved this hotel from a 1-star review.

It needs some updating but was clean and comfortable. The kitchen doesn't have much to cook with and I found the room to be very expensive for what I got from it. I will say that it's very close to all major attractions in Vancouver and that the shopping and restaurants near bye are great. It would be nice if they updated their TV channels. I have three kids and there was nothing to watch. For the price you pay, they can afford a good channel package. I had to take my kids down 8 floors with luggage to check out due to the fact they only have one elevator! That pissed me off!!!! I waited nearly ten minutes for an elevator before I decided to take the stairs. Like I said, it was an ok stay!

I stayed here at the Riviera about 25 years ago on a business trip to Vancouver and found the stay to be very good. I've always wanted to return to the city with all the beautiful parks and great things to do. I was finally able to do that recently - bringing my wife along. And I wanted to stay at the Riviera for at least some of our stay because the staff had been very courteous and helpful. The rooms are well cared for making the stay very pleasant. I would recommend the Riviera to any value-minded traveler.

Room Tip: Our second floor room was very quiet due to the traffic flow through the building.

This hotel is ideally situated for exploring west end Vancouver but we found it too noisy for our liking. The staff were helpful and friendly but the hotel itself was a little depressing in its décor. Everything seems to be brown coloured. The front windows couldn't open which would have been nice in the early evening for the fresh air.
