The Westin Grand, Vancouver

Reviewed 17 April 2009

The Westin was certainly grand when it came to service, cleanliness and the corner rooms in the executive suites, particularly rooms #3003 and #3009. We arrived in the middle of the night with 2 tired and hungry boys after a 6 hour flight from Maui, and Phil at the front desk was kind enough to quickly register us and find food for my boys. The bell boys were prompt and helped us with the ice, extra blankets and pillows, and turn down the sofa bed. The next day, we had a complimentary continental breakfast at the Aria restaurant within the hotel, which surprisingly consisted of a buffet of any breakfast food you wanted. It was lovely! After breakfast, we sought the concierge's help for things to do in Vancouver in one day, and Lisa who was knowlegable and resourceful advised us to see the Aquarium, Stanley Park and the Telus Science World. My kids had a wonderful time at these venues, thanks to Lisa's suggestions. She also arranged for us to take a shuttle to Whistler the next day. I also have to acknowledge, the bell man who pushed a luggage carrier filled with 12 bags, 2 blocks for us to meet the bus since it was unable to pick us up at the hotel.
We stayed in a suite on the 30th floor. We had a corner room with floor to ceiling windows wrapping around so the view of the city and harbour was spectacular, especially at night with all the city lights. The room had a mini kitchenette, a living space, and a master bedroom. The bathroom was large with a separate bath and shower stall. Very clean and quite new! Upon our arrival, we also had complimentary fruits and water. Local calls were also free in the executive suites.
The location in the middle of downtown was very convenient. A supermarket was right next door and restaurants and Starbuck's at very close proximity.
All in all, we had a very pleasant stay, and if we were in Vancouver again, would not hesitate to choose the Westin Grand again.

This hotel gets an OK. The room service food was great. Really great, fresh but also pricey so you wouldn't have expected anything less. The room was ok - clean enough but looked pretty tired and in need of some freshening up. The kitchen was really handy ( we had our two kids with us) and we were easily able to prepare some quick breakfast and bottles. The service was pretty good although when we questioned our bill upon check out we were questioned right back which was very rude in my opinion. There were some local calls charged to our bill which we never made (used our cell phones to make calls) and they also charged us for wireless Internet that never worked the first night we were there. They admitted that they were having problems. The pool is outside so not really the greatest during rainy spring in Vancouver. All in all it was just an OK stay. We've stayed at alot of other hotels in the City and this one is middle of the road.

As a Starwood Preferred Guest, I've stayed at many other Westin hotel locations in the past. This particular hotel holds up the Westin reputation for comfort and luxury. The staff were friendly and nice. The hotel is in a very good location in downtown Vancouver -walkable to many sites. Breafast in the lobby was yummy (it's a hot breakfast) and very elegant. I also appreciated that they had complimentary use of a computer and printer for airline check in for the guests.

The only 2 things I didn't like about my stay here:
1) The hotel only has 2 small elevators that works on an imperfect hotel keycard system. The elevators were very slow and the keycard system only served to slow them down even more as folks were often fussing about trying to figure out this inefficient system.

2) The rooms are oddly shaped (the hotel property is in the shape of a grand piano - hence the name). As a result, some of the room layouts are not exactly optimal and are even kinda awkward at times.

The Westin Grand is a very good choice for a centralised location in downtown Vancouver. It's situated right beside the Vancouver library and Yaletown and is within short walking distance to the main shopping and eating areas. An IGA is also conveniently located right by the hotel. I had a mini 1 bdrm suite that came with a tiny cooking area (sink, microwave, dishwasher) which was a pleasant surprise. Service was good and the room was very clean. Also there was a good, decent sized gym available.

This is a fabulous place. Very spacious living room and nice bedroom and bathroom. Included microwave, sink, dishes, toaster silverware and tea towels -- so great place if you are staying a few days. Decor was very nice. Very clean and staff were very nice. I highly recommend.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel this past weekend, as part of a brief getaway for our anniversary. We arrived via car and parked in the self-park lot under the hotel. The cost for that is $21, and does include in and out privileges.
Check-in was easy, and when we mentioned conversationally to the front desk person that we were celebrating our anniversary, she upgraded our room, even though she had just finished checking us in to a different room! We were placed in a balcony suite on the corner of the building, which had a nice view of the city. The sitting room and bedroom were nicely decorated, and the bathroom was large and lovely. The suite (as with all suites in the hotel, I believe) had a handy little kitchenette area, which included a minibar, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, dishwasher, several drawers of utensils, and shelves with cups, plates and wine glasses.

The hotel is in a good location, within walking distance of several interesting areas of Vancouver, including Gastown and Yaletown. There are tons of restaurants and coffee shops in the area, as well as plenty of other shopping, including a huge underground mall just a few blocks away. There is also a full-sized grocery store next door to the hotel.

We were pleasantly surprised to find a plate of chocolate covered strawberries waiting for us in our room upon our return from exploring!

Check out was also easy, and the person working at the desk made sure to ask if we had had a nice anniversary celebration. I was very impressed by the service at this hotel and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

The hotel has a small footprint. Small lobby area. Clean and well maintained other then the glitch with the sometimes on elevator. The worst when you have to wait endlessly when one of the 'vators are not running. I was upgraded to a larger room, mini suite, actually.

The room was nice. clean. The WESTIN bed was very clean crisp and comfortable. One problem wiht the hotle is that taxis are in sort supply and when they call for one you do have to wait abit. Dont know if this is typical of all hotels in Vancouver.

Overall it was a good stay but nothing stood out.
