Best Western Plus Sands
Ranked #43 of 92 Hotels in Vancouver
Reviewed 8 January 2012

My travelling companion and I booked this in the internet using booking.com so knew nothing about it except what we read in customer feedback (which was very good). We asked for a room with a view and that is what we got - looking out over English Bay; beautiful. The staff we excellent - the room was not quite ready but they were ready with suggestions on how to fill our time until it was (the restaurant - for traditional Canadian pancakes - was a top tip). The trolley bus stop outside the door made access to downtown so easy. Around the corner are a great selection of restaurants, bars and cafes. Stanley Park is within walking distance, as are ferries to Granville Island and other points. Excellent staff, well-appointed room and excellent location. Definitely one for a repeat visit.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view (however this is also the noisier side of the building).

You won't find better value or a better location. I've been a staying here 2-3 times a year for the last few years. Its very close to downtown but far enough away from all the noise so you can sleep well and you can't beat the location next door to English Bay and world-famous Stanley Park. It was recently upgraded to a "Plus" category by Best Western and the rooms have big flat-screen TVs, comfortable beds, nicely decorated rooms etc.

Room Tip: Have a drink in their Bayside Lounge and enjoy a 5 Star view of English Bay

It was clean and pleasant. The bar downstairs had good food. Staff was friendly and helpful. The location was pretty nice. It was within easy walking distance to many restaurants and to the waterfront. Parking was available for a small additional charge. Overall a pretty good stay.

Stay here and have a two-minute walk to English Bay beach where the paved pathway leads west to the seawall around Stanley Park, or east for hiking around False Creek. And it's at the corner of Denman and Davie Streets - both lined with dozens of restaurants of every ethnicity and price range. The hotel is somewhat dated, but very nicely kept up. The beds and linens were perfectly comfortable; the bathroom was quite compact but came with lots of fluffy towels, a great shower and tub. The room had a new big flat-screen TV, a multi-plug receptacle easily accessible on the desk for charging cellphones and keeping computers plugged in, and a nice strong reliable wifi signal. The room had an opening window (but also some late-night people-noise from the parking lot - so keep the window closed or bring your earplugs), and there was even an umbrella in the closet to use on those rainy Vancouver days. The coffee/tea machine in the room worked well - it's more advanced and more complex than the usual; in addition to coffee packs it came with (Red Rose) black and another brand of green tea bags. The room had a small organics recycle bin in addition to the regular paper recycle bin and a trash bin. There is a computer in the lobby available free for guests - we used it to print boarding passes. Each floor gets a small stack of daily newspapers - you have to go to the table near the elevator to fetch one; go early or you'll miss out. The young woman at the front desk advised us exactly what bus to take to the subway to the airport, and what exact change we would need. One evening the desk clerk called us a cab and it was there within 2 minutes (even though it was rainy and in late December). In the hotel restaurant I overheard the hotel Manager reimbursing some guests who had accidentally been charged for parking - he made a point of tracking them down even after they had checked out and paid their bill by credit card; so he gave them cash.
Note that the $5.99 breakfast deal requires you to also get a cup of tea or coffee for $2.55. (I thought it would be simpler to just charge $7.50 for the whole thing).
Overall, I got the feeling that the owner of this hotel cares deeply about keeping it updated, about employing responsible people, and about ensuring guests are satisfied. In all, it was a great experience; I'd stay here again in a flash.

Room Tip: Rooms at the ends of the hallways are further from the pop machine and elevator, so typically are a...

I am very happy that you enjoyed your stay with us.
I don't know if you realized that the alarm clock is an IPod, IPad and IPhone docking station to play your music and to charge your phone. Also it is compatible with the attachment at the back of the alarm clock for Blackberries. There is also a charging outlet on the side. Another interesting feature is that this alarm will only set once and not go off when the next guest checks in if you forget to turn off the alarm.
We all strive to keep the hotel updated on a regular bases as it is very important to maintain the property in this very competitive market. Our staff is empowered and responsible to ensuring guests are satisfied with their stay. Thank you for staying with us and look forward to seeing you again.

Great hotel in the West End of Vancouver. No frills but if you book quite far in advance you can get a room for good value.
There is a bar downstairs and another called the Bayside just a few steps away.
It's good for staying somewhere close to Stanley Park and English Bay Beach.
What this hotel is not is romantic, trying to woo someone.. keep looking.

This hotel is right on the edge of English Bay and Stanley Park. It is an very good hotel and reasonably priced. There are numerous excellent restaurants in the neighbourhood - check out Rain City Grill - and there is even a bicycle rental shop across the street close to all the bike trails along the waterfront. Downtown is a 15 minute walk, or take the bus outside the hotel door. You really can't go wrong at the Sands. Lates visit was in November, 2011, but we and friends have stayed many times there amd it has always been clean, efficient and well staffed.

Room Tip: rooms at the back are quieter

We stayed two lots of 3 nights at the Sands in September 2011 and were very happy. The staff at the front desk could not have been more helpful. When we left for one night in Seattle we were able to keep our bags at the hotel. Rooms and bathrooms were clean, air-conditioning, fridge, coffee machine all worked well.
Only minor criticism was that the free wi-fi was a bit unreliable. I sometimes had to take the laptop down the corridor close to the lifts to get connected.
Location was handy. Close to English Bay and Stanley Park. Buses to downtown and the hop-on-hop-off bus stops were close.
