“By the Sea”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

The fact that it is so close to the waterfront is the main attraction of this hotel, not to mention
some of the best eating spots in Vancouver. The hotel has been renovated and the
restaurant has lost its nostalgic 50's charm; it is now typical of the many dark wooded
lounges in Vancouver. The rooms are clean, offering free coffee and tea beverages. At
low season it is a great bargain but the high rates of the summer are not equivalent up
to par with hotels that are on the waterfront with more amenities.

Hello

Thank You for the review, Yes unfortunately to some people we have modernized our hotel bar. Although it did loose the nostalgic feel we now have 25 draft lines featuring local beers and a very diverse menu to go along with the new decor. I am glad you enjoyed the selection of Seattle Best coffee's and Tazo tea's in the rooms. We hope to see you on your next trip to Vancouver.

You can tell this is an old hotel, but this just adds to the character. It was very clean, and the staff were so courteous and helpful. This was a nice sized room, and it is one block from English Bay, which is were the Sea Wall is. The location was prime, and we were so glad we stayed here!

I stayed here on points, but the price that was quoted was very reasonable for the location. My favourite things about this hotel were that they have rooms that look out over the water. As this was my first time in Vancouver it was nice to see the water and some bits of mountains from my room. Another benefit, they provided a green bin for organic items. This was a pleasant surprise and where I stashed my teabags each morning. The room also provided a small fridge where I kept restaurant left overs. Very convenient.

One note about this location, it is at the end of Davie St. at the bottom of a long, graded hill. To go back up Davie it a little bit of a climb.

There is a Tim Horton's across the street for morning bagel, and the #6 Davie Bus right outside it will take you up the hill for $2.75. Also, a bike rental shop right beside.

The beach at English Bay is steps away and a great place to catch a sunset.

Room Tip: Ask to face the waters of English Bay.

Stayed for three nights in early May. I told them at check in that noise was not a problem, so they gave us a room on the second floor, street side, by the elevators, next to the drink machine. Did not hear any noise from any of the above. They allowed us to check in early and were extremely helpful with information on the area. Room was very nice, view of English Bay from the window (at an angle), just up the street from the Hop on/Hop off trolley, tons of restaurants and a grocery store and liquor store close by. Used the on site laundry facilities as we were staying here pre-cruise and wanted to start out with clean laundry. The taxi to he ship (Canada Place) was only about $10. We stayed here two years ago and definitely will stay here on our next trip.

Perfect location for sightseeing around Vancouver. Parking is available on site for $15/night. Directly across the street is a shop to rent bicycles. We spent an hour and a half riding bikes around the park. My 15 yo son and I loved this beautiful trip around the park. The hotel is only a minutes walk to the beach. Hotel staff are very helpful with directions and sightseeing information. My son was not up for this trip, however, he had a great time and wants to go back again. His favorite was Granville Island public market area. We bought tons of fresh fruit (our room had a refrigerator) and took it back to our hotel! I do recommend bringing ear plugs as many comments about the thin walls and noisy streets are spot on.

Hello

Thank You for reviewing our property. It is great to hear you were able to visit many of the tourist attractions Vancouver has to offer. Granville Island is a great experience. You are correct being a downtown property we do experience some street noise but I am glad it did not hinder your experience. We look forward to seeing you on your next visit to Vancouver.

We stayed at this hotel for two nights after a cruise. We could not check in when we arrived as they were very busy - it is cruise season in Vancouver - but they held our luggage and contacted us as soon as a room was available.

We were on the top floor (5) at the rear of the property. You needed to keep the window closed as there was some noise and cooking smells otherwise.

The room was large and clean , with a refrigerator and large television. The bathroom was a reasonable size with good amenities. The Arctic rated quilt on the bed (the thickest I think I have ever had in a hotel) was a nuisance as even with the air conditioning turned to 60 degrees it was way too heavy. I doubt you would need it in the middle of winter.

It is very close to Denman St shops and restaurants, the beach and Stanley Park. It is about 2km (1.3 miles) to Coal Harbour and our favourite restaurant Cardero's.

We did not use the hotel restaurant but they seemed to have some very good breakfast deals.

We arrived off our Cruise from Yokohama and arrived incredibly early by taxi.
The welcome and check in procedure was faultless we were given a room by 10am, so walked down to English beach and then around town to get our bearings.
Free wifi provided by hotel and on Friday burgers for $4
Great location for Davie street and English beach.
Room had a balcony, large comfortable bed, great bathroom too.
When we are back in Vancouver we will not hesitate to stay again as it ticks all the boxes and has staff that Best Western should be proud of.
