Our suite was a very nice, fully furnished one bedroom apartment with a full kitchen. Compared with the other alternatives in Vancouver, this was an excellent value, and if I'm in Vancouver again in the future, I will definitely stay here.

On the plus side: Two good flat screen TVs, one in the living room, one in the bedroom. Comfortable bed. Very clean. Friendly, helpful staff. Only 1-2 blocks from Davie St., where stores and restaurants are abundant. Inexpensive (relatively) soft drink machine. Free continental breakfast. Small balcony. Front desk can get you a taxi very fast.

On the minus side: Bedroom has window air conditioner, but rest of apartment was not air conditioned and a dehumidifier and fans were provided. It wasn't hot when we visited and this was not an issue. You must take your free continental breakfast back to your room to eat, as there's no seating in the area where the food is. The breakfast is somewhat basic and might not be sufficient for some people. The living room TV controls were complicated to operate. These minuses were all pretty minor to me but I thought I should mention them.

While this hotel would meet my definition of being in downtown Vancouver, Vancouver is a big city and this is not a short walk to Canada Place or Stanley Park. You'll probably need to take public transportation or a taxi to get to those places.

I booked our trip to Vancouver at the very last minute- 24 hours before our flight. Our trip was planned for Whistler, BC. We flew from LA to Vancouver and decided to spend a few days. I used TA to plan the entire Vancouver trip. Without sounding snobbish, Sunset Inn and Suites is a notch or two below hotels we would normally stay in but having booked so last minute in a busy summer month, they were one of the few hotels, ranked highly by TA, that could accommodate our stay. That being said, what a pleasant surprise! First, its in a very convenient residential/downtown location- walking distant from Davie Village (loads of great ethnic restaurants, sushi, coffee houses, etc) and the water trolley that takes you across to Granville island (a definite day or half day trip)is also a quick walk. We booked a large, double suite. One room has a king bed, and the main living room had TWO fold out couches- perfect for my two teenagers. Only downside was one bathroom with two sinks, but that was manageable. The rooms are older but we could tell ours had been newly redone- same for bathroom. Also has a nice kitchenette. Very spacious and VERY CLEAN! I complimented them on their cleaning staff. The room and bathroom was always spotless. We were on the side of the hotel facing Granville Island. Beautiful sunset and night time view. Free parking on site was also a plus. We didn't have the breakfasts. Headed out on foot each morning to find a local place. there is a Starbucks on the corner. Many reviewers note that its on a "secluded" street. We didn't feel that way. Maybe because it was summer it felt busier- lots of runners and dog walkers, etc. Its less than half a block away from other very busy streets. Front desk staff is incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, and have great local recommendations.

Room Tip: if possible, request the Granville Island view

We stayed here for one night for a friend's wedding reception on September 21, 2013. All of the other Vancouver hotels were very highly priced ($170 or higher). After looking on Trip Advisor, I phoned Sunset Inn and Suites and luckily received the last room in the hotel. For $115/nt! This hotel has extremely friendly service, rooms were huge and clean. We ordered and ate dinner in at our great little dining table. Beds are super comfy and great linens. We were able to walk to downtown within a few blocks. We walked to the sky train to catch the Canada Line back to the airport the next day. Would highly recommend this hotel and would definitely stay here again.

We stayed here because it is right downtown, and it offers a full kitchen, with comfortable beds. The free breakfast in the morning was fantastic, with a waffle maker, too. The parking garage underground was very difficult to park the car, as it has tight corners, so it would be harder with a large vehicle. Nice place to stay for a couple of nights.

Had the best holiday, my hotel room was more like a one bedroom apartment.
Right downtown, close to friends that lived one block over. Close to Sea Wall walk, Davie Street and Robson Street.
Breakfast was served in the lobby, lots of choices.

Based on all the reviews, I really wanted to love Sunset. I really did. But try as I might, I couldn't.

First with the good stuff:

-Location is quite decent. It's a street in from Davie, a busy street with lots of shops. Also 2 blocks from Burrard, a major thoroughfare. But the location is in a secluded street with lots of trees and quiet.
-Walking distance (albeit down and then back up a steep hill) to the beach.
-The suite set up with a kitchenette and a separate bedroom is perfect for families on vacation. Microwave, utensils, fridge, stovetop...all invaluable when traveling with children.
-Wi-Fi was fast and free.
-Service and friendly and efficient.
-Free parking.

Now with some of the drawbacks:

-Everything felt cramped. The hallways, the tiny elevator, our particular suite. I started feeling claustrophobic. Towards the end of our stay we saw that each suite is different. One of them in particular has a much more open feeling. Recommend you ask the reservations person about this.
-The suite and furnishings, while acceptable, were dated and felt like something out of the Seventies. For those who don't mind these things, it probably won't be a factor.
-Our suite faced the alley directly behind Davie St. On weekends and even weeknights, it could get quite loud with whooping and hollering from revelers. Strongly recommend you ask for suites facing Burnaby St.
-Burnaby St. is a one way street, so it might be a bit tricky finding it and unloading.
-The underground parking is extremely tight, with one of the tightest clearances for exiting the parking structure I've ever seen. I was very worried about scraping the car. Can't imagine how an SUV or van would ever feel comfortable getting out of there.

I feel the promise of Sunset is more than the actual execution. It likely is great for many families, as the reviews attest. Just make sure you know what you're getting so you don't end up disappointed like I was.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms facing Burnaby St. Ask for the more open floor plan suites.

We were looking for a place to stay in "central" downtown Vancouver with free breakfast, free wi-fi, free parking and this was not easy to find. This hotel met all our needs, and even came with a kitchenette plus a nice view of downtown!! It was an easy walk to Davie St. which is full of places to eat, and about a 15 to 20 minute stroll to Robson St.
However, the only downside was their parking!! It is located behind the hotel, in an alley not easy to get to, and the space is limited and tiny, hard to park especially with a rental "mini van". So, if you spend all day sightseeing and come back late, the "easier spots" are all taken. So for that I give this hotel a 4 rating, everything else was great!
Oh, better mention, they do have free breakfast, very simple; like cereal, some pastries, with coffee, tea, and juice dispensers, but you need to bring it all up to your room. No dining space near the lobby area.
