“Great old hotel”
Reviewed 13 September 2011

We found this hotel searching for a place on our last night in Vancouver. It's a real gem. It's an old hotel - 99 years young - but clean and in a great location. English Bay park/beach is right across the street and was a great place to people-watch and catch an amazing sunset. Lots of good restaurants easy walking distance. Easy walk to Stanley Park as well and their great Aquarium.

I am happy that you found us and based on your comments I believe you will be back. 99 years young I like that, yes next year we will be 100 years old and still offering great customer service. The location is one of the best in Vancouver for all the reasons you mentioned. We will look forward to your next visit.

This is a decent and clean hotel with friendly and responsive staff. They were always cheerful and helped me with directions whenever I needed. This is an older building and rooms are of an older style. That becomes obvious with the older-style wall plugs (some of mine didn't seem to work) and old fashioned keys (no key cards here). These aren't big deals and I enjoyed my stay.

There are a few improvements that the hotel could make to the room. For example, the walk-in closet is great, but there's no light in there and it could definitely use one. Key card systems are standard in hotels these days and could be used here -- as it is now, you're supposed to leave your key at the desk every time you exit the hotel. Some of the bathroom light switches are above the mirror and would be out of reach for some guests. Finally, it felt odd having open windows with pigeons strolling and cooing constantly on the ledge right outside - it may not be a big deal, but it took away from the view and it seemed unsanitary to me to have pigeons hanging around so close by.

This hotel's real selling point - and this overshadows everything - is its incredible location just off the beach at English Bay. You can literally cross the street and go suntanning or take a stroll or run around the seawall. Just down the street, on Denman, are bike rental places that can equip you with bikes. Also nearby are hundreds of restaurants and coffee shops covering just about every type of cuisine imaginable. If you're looking to relax in Vancouver, this is the place to be.

To get here by transit, grab a bus at the Yaletown Skytrain Station (on the Canada Line from the airport) - many of them go down Davie all the way to Denman which is the nearest major intersection.

You have made my day with your opening comments, I agree with you on some of your comments about some improvements that could be made, we are always trying to get into the rooms to do some of the work that needs to be done, however we are always so busy we can only do some of that work in the off season. Looks like you enjoyed your stay and we are very happy about that. Please come back anytime.

Stayed 4 days here and loved the location! Next to Stanley Park and 200 feet from the walking/ bike path and the beach. This is not a hotel for everyone if you're expecting a Marriott. It is an old historic building... with a European feel. Lighting in the room was minimal... a ceiling fan or floor fan would've made a huge difference in the stuffiness. my room was small and the bathroom incredibly tiny.
But I wasn't in the room that much.
Bus stop was only 2 blocks away and very easy to figure out where you want to go. The whole city is very walkable and navigating is a breeze. Everyone was very friendly !
The Hop on- hop off bus is just across the street a block down.
Many many restaurants on Denman street.... very walkable and felt very safe at all times.
HOTEL Value was ok.

The Sylvia harkens back to a different time. A lot about it is reminiscent of a bygone time. It's not new and spiffy, but it has a certain charm. It's in the West End, right on English Bay, so there are lots of lovely walks one can take along the beach and into Stanley Park. Plus it's right off Denman Street which has tons of fabulous little eateries. We stayed for three nights and thoroughly enjoyed the hotel and its location.

Vancouver being a world class city probably has many hotels more grand and sophisticated than the Sylvia, but I would never stay anywhere else. The Sylvia a vine covered facade and original signage. Inside, one of the two elevators still has the metal dial that indicates the floors and the some of the lobby furniture is quite likely genuine antique but comfortable and charming. The rooms have been updated, beds are comfortable and the bathroom fittings updated and clean. The staff are always very professional and helpful ; I have always been greeted warmly by both desk staff and the dining room staff. All these attributes are important but it is the location that makes the Sylvia unique and very splendid, with a view of English Bay and easy walking to Stanley Park and Sea Wall, and in the other direction, the little ferry dock that takes passengers to Granville Island. The Sylvia is in a pretty residential area with lots of restaurants and shops nearby and Robson Street is very walkable. If you like chrome and glass and leather and sterile lobbies, you won't find The Sylvia to your liking but if you like the feeling of a hotel well used and loved, you will feel at home here.

I could not have written a better review myself (I did not write this one I promise) I am always happy when I read that our guests see the value and appreciate the heritage of the Sylvia Hotel. Some people do like the stainless steel and neon signs of a newer hotel and there are hotels like that however we are not one of them. Please come back any time and enjoy the service and location of the Sylvia Hotel

My wife and I stayed at the Sylivia in Vancouver in August 2011. The room was old and very small and stuffy but clean. Was very noisy outside on Fri- Sat nights. What is with Canadian Hotels and a lack of lighting in the rooms? As far as old hotels go it is OK in a nice location.

Room Tip: No Tea making facilities, no fridge, VERY stuffy, NO aircon. Very basic, it's just a room.

Thank-you for staying with us on your last trip to Vancouver, we are 100 years old next year and hope that you visit us again. We have a number of room types and sizes, on your next visit, if you need extra space please inform the reservations agent and we can get you a larger room as we have so many different sizes. We do not need air-conditioning for the rooms as all the windows open to allow for a breeze at night to keep the rooms cool. Most of our guests tell us they like the fresh air rather than having the air conditioners. We also have fans at the front desk that we can offer you should you require them. On some occasions in the summer there is some noise coming from the beach, however the police are very good at keeping the noise down if required.

We stayed here for 3 nights, and overall had a good feeling about the hotel. Maybe it's a little bit overpriced. The location is very nice, near Stanley Park and on walking distance from the centre. The room was a bit old and a bit noisy, but it was OK. We did not bring our own computer, but we could use one in the lobby. Breakfast (with view on English Bay!) was good, although not included in the room rate.

Thank-you for your comments, I love having breakfast in the am on the patio so happy you enjoyed your stay. The computer in the lobby is there for our Guests to use and we find it very convenient for people that do not travel with their own. During your three night stay I am glad to see that you enjoyed our location so close to the beach and Stanley Park. Hope to see you again on your next trip to our City.
