“A Pleasant Change from the Chains”
Reviewed 29 October 2012

Stayed here for four days - great room, outstanding service. The hallways are tired, and the elevator a constant exercise in hope, but it is a hotel with real character, and an excellent location. Front desk and restaurant staff were outstanding - efficient and very helpful. Would stay here again instead of the usual Sheraton or Coast experiences, where if you don't look out the window you could be in any city in the world.

Right on English Bay Beach in Vancouver's West End, the Sylvia has been here forever. It's a great location, funky rooms, very reasonably priced, and very personable service. Book well in advance if you're coming in any kind of tourist season. It's great value and gets booked quickly.

Thank-you for staying with us. Happy to read that you enjoyed the service offered by my crew and the location (which is fantastic). Good tip to other guests to book early as we do fill up every year in the peak season. Hope we can serve you again soon.

I used to stay exclusively at the Sylvia hotel because it allowed dogs and the place simply ruled with awesome staff and an overall relaxing environment. Not anymore, something changed over the past couple of years and after careful reflection I have observed the one thing that significantly changed in the area was this feeling that many many people in the local neighborhood exhibited extreme passive aggressive behavior. I made this observation primarily because I live in Seattle on Capitol Hill where passive aggressiveness is rampant. So, to sum things up, I will not stay in the sylvia hotel neighborhood ever again because there are now way too many gender confused passive aggressive types that have migrated.

Room Tip: only rent a room for a couple of nights and sniff out the neighborhood to determine if it's pack...

I am unsure how to respond to your comments. It is your opinion and you did not mention the service or experience while you stayed with us. I have worked here for 4 years and I love the area. We are in a quiet, safe residential area right across from English Bay and so close to Stanley Park. I have not heard any comments from guests about the people in the area as most are tourism or locals enjoying the area. Sorry you had a bad experience. Should you have any other comments about your stay please contact me directly to discuss your concerns.

I`ve always enjoyed the Sylvia's breakfasts, but have never experienced the hotel until this past weekend. It was in many ways just like the hotel previous reviewers suggested. There were lots of great things, and some not so great, but overall our stay was very good.

First the not so good. Hallway carpets are rather worn. They need obvious replacing. The carpet in our room was no different. Our bathroom was very dated and upon first inspection did reveal a bit of a musty odor. The hotel could do with a complete refreshing. However, this would lead to higher rates, which leads to the positives.

Our tax in rate for a double queen room on the 5th floor, enormous and featuring views of English Bay was $168. Parking was an additional $15. And this puts you right on the edge of Stanley Park and the beach. A fantastic deal! Staff are friendly, beds are new and comfy, and the flat screen TV was perfect for my daughter's morning cartoons. The restaurant and bar have already been renovated. They're fabulous.

As you can see from my comments, pro's outweigh the con's by a considerable margin. Expect a little less polish than the modern hotels and enjoy one of Vancouver true landmarks. We did and we will again.

Room Tip: Request a water view. They'll actually try to give you one. 524 was our room number. It's hu...

Happy to read that you eat in the restaurant and now have stayed in the rooms with us. We are always trying to upgrade the hotel; however it is hard while we are so busy, so this off season we are going to Reno the hallways as I agree they are getting tired. I was happy to read that you see the value in your stay as we work hard to keep the costs down. I will look forward to serving you again on your return visit to the restaurant.

I have been to Vancouver a number of times on business, but I will remember this visit the best. As this was not a cookie cutter hotel. We really enjoyed our stay in the Sylvia. The hotel is 100 years old and the history is woven in the walls and the vines on the outside of the building. The room was comfortable and the front desk staff were fantastic. The parking as accessible and convenient. There were tonnes of places to eat close by. Stanley Park and the beach are a blink away. It was fun being part of history. It would have been nice to have a coffee machine in the room and the price of parking was another $15 per day.

So I can book it easily. Honestly, can you find any better value in Vancouver? No way. First off, the location is spectacular. English Bay just across the street. Denman Street restaurants just around the corner. The views from the restaurant and lounge are beautiful. The front desk staff are so friendly, they feel like friends. The outside of the hotel is beautiful, especially in the fall with the vines turning colours. Now, we had a room on the top floor (803), with a view of the small park off Denman and Davie, with the 14 statues of the Laughing Men. Check them out, they're awesome. Bed was reasonably comfortable, maybe a tad soft for my liking. Very comfy reading chair. The hotel isn't spanking new, it's vintage funky. Carpet could be newer, towels a bit worn, hallway could use a paint job, the cleaning cart definitely should be replaced or at least painted, it looks old. No big deals though. This hotel has an old charm to it and the price provides outstanding value.

Biggest recommendation - the coffee in the restaurant is weak. But, there are coffee places on Denman and Davie.

Room Tip: There are rooms beside the elevator. We didn't have one of those, I'm sure I wouldn't wa...

What a great title, I hear that statement often, guests do not want to promote the hotel in case they can not get a room if too many people hear about us. You mentioned all the things that our guests want to know. Friendly staff, great service and location. Thank-you for posting your scores and comments. So I hope that more guests decide to stay with us and write a review like yours, hope to see you again soon.

This is an old hotel that is in moderate condition, but if that is important to you, then select another option. It is well located, has a wonderful staff and interesting history. The restaurant is good, (not memorable) and has a nice view of English Bay. The Wi-Fi is free and there is a complimentary computer in the lobby. It has a large garage where you can park for $15 a night. All of the staff were so helpful and courteous. We especially appreciated the tips from the front desk on shopping, eating and sight seeing. In spite of the addtion of a number of lighting fixtures, the room was still pretty dark.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the front of the hotel are quieter, though you do give up a nice view
