A little tired but clean and close to everything, including the water, Stanley Park, trolley line,
nearby restaurants and short walk to good shopping.

This is probably our fifth stay at the Sylvia over the past twenty years, a 1912-vintage apartment hotel right on English Bay. The outside walls are stone, covered with Virginia Creeper, very European, as Vancouver itself is, really. Leafy neighborhoods, lots of dogs and squirrels,( and even a family of four racoons!), fun for walking, right on Stanley Park and near downtown. No car required.

Sylvia has quiet, spacious rooms, most with kitchens, some with fabulous views of the harbour, good beds, attentive, unobtrusive housekeepers, hot water, great room service from the good kitchen, nice bar for drinks. And the rates are very reasonable. It's even dog-friendly, though we come by train this time.

Apparently you can't go wrong staying at the Sylvia. I was there for 6 days and, again, concluded that it is one of the best cost/benefit ratios in the world.

We came in late at night and left early the next morning, so didn't get to sample the local area. The hotel was older but neat and clean. We needed something near the Amtrack station (10 minute cab ride) that was reasonable price but not in a bad neighborhood. We'd go back.

What the hotel lacks in modern amenities in makes up for in charm. Friendly, helpful staff and probably the best location in the city. Highly recommended.
