Sandman Suites Vancouver - Davie Street
Ranked #64 of 92 Hotels in Vancouver

This was our fourth or fifth stay at the Sandman Suites on Davie and we had a very enjoyable time again. The rooms are relatively small, especially the bathroom, but the compensation of excellent views and really helpful staff make up for that, and more. The rooms have well-equipped kitchens, and also a machine machine / dryer which makes our longer stays comfortable and give us more choice. It would be nice to have a better heater for the room since the fan in the unit is noisy. And a dustpan and brush would be a handy addition to the kitchen equipment. Other than that all seemed good to us.

The staff are always very pleasant and do all they can to make your visit a pleasure. The local area suffered an expected and unusal power-outage for 6 hours and they did all they could to keep things going, and sent an apology to each room. It wasn't their fault, but they understood the inconvenience for the time that the power was out. The cleaning and maintenance staff are also to be commended for their friendliness and efficiency.

The area is interesting and lively - all of life passes along Davie Street! It is very convenient (nice walking distance) for Downtown, English Bay and Granville Island, and has good bus links.

Room Tip: The recommendation for this hotel is to try to have a room as high as possible in the building and o...

Just had a three night stay at Sandman suites.... although it was a bit noisy (I was there over St. Patty's weekend), the hotel was great. Room was very spacious and front desk staff were very helpful. I was given a complimentary upgrade with a wonderful view of the sea and mountains... Location was great. Easily walkable to many nearby attractions including Stanley Park, Canada Place, etc... Good selection of restaurants nearby including a great thai place across the street.. I was very happy with my stay and hope to return soon!

The so called suites are really miniscule one bedroom apartments with a kitchen and washer/dryer thing. They have done their best to make the lobby look hip and inviting but the room fixtures, uncomfortable furnishings, ventilation etc. are really pretty tired and shabby and frankly kind of smelly. One gets the feeling the staff know they are working in a discount dump and try really hard to make you as welcome and comfortable as possible in spite of the aging 70's building.
The location is pretty good - if you don't mind being in the heart of " Boystown" and there are many varied shops and and good restaurants near by. (Including a KFC and a XXX "adult" shop across the street.)
It's really overall, more on a par with an old interstate motel than a slick Vancouver hotel but if you are on a
super tight budget you may like it.

If your standards are high and your budget is low then this is the hotel for you. I found this hotel way more than I expected for the price. If people watching and hussle and bussle is one of your likes - this is the place with a European feel. If you want a very quick stay and access to all major in out routes from either ferry to the island and want to enjoy good access to nightlife on your quick stay, you can find it here.

The kitchen was nice to have, especially for someone with dietary concerns, though there was lots of different food options just downstairs including a fruit stand and Cobs breads. There was an in suite laundry, very helpful to have even if it was kind of annoying to use (locks for 10 minutes after cycle, 4 hr average cycle). The bedroom was small and the dresser in our room gave me a bruise on my hip from bumping into it so many times. If they put in flat screen tv's and got rid of the dresser it would free up lots of room. The bed was also uncomfortable, it was saggy and lumpy. But the views were excellent!

We stayed here five nights from January 7 to 11th while waiting to take possession of our new home. For a few days we wanted the convenience of a fully-outfitted suite complete with kitchen and laundry.

We occupied a one bedroom king suite on the 20th floor. It came complete with four burner range, frost free refrigerator, a 24" dishwasher, microwave, and even a combination washer/condensing (ventless) dryer. Our suite had pots and pans, dishes, glasses, even things like measuring cups, knives, a strainer, potholders and a cutting board. They even supplied detergent for the dishwasher.

The suite itself is nothing special furnishings wise, it was clean, the bath had minimal amenities and the furnishings were fairly ordinary. For us the luxury was in having a suite that we could cook and live in as though it were an apartment. As much as I enjoy eating out, after more than two weeks in hotel rooms we were delighted to be able to go the supermarket nearby and buy groceries that we could prepare ourselves.

The view from all the windows and balcony was spectacular. We faced towards False Creek/English Bay and had a panoramic view of the entire area, including the residential building we were waiting to move into. A picture from the balcony is attached. We could watch freighters come and go, small pleasure craft navigating the bay, and even at night the view is magnificent because all the ships are lit up then.

The suite included a washer/dryer combination unit. It sounds nifty but in reality it takes 5 hours or so to do one small load of laundry, most of that time being the drying cycle. It doesn't work like hot air dryers but instead it dehumidifies the clothes. They do come out warm and dry but rather more wrinkled than from a conventional dryer. We did two loads a day while we were there and by the time we checked out to take possession of our new home we left with suitcases full of clean clothing.

We were offered a very good rate, some $40/night off the published rack rate but that saving was offset some by the fairly steep $18.25 daily parking rate. They told us it was $15 per day but on the bill was added a $3.25 parking tax, whatever that is. However it is in a secured underground lot.

I had tremendous difficulty with the Internet wi-fi connection, with frustrating disconnections. My partner had less trouble but his computer is newer and I suspect has a better wi-fi receiver than mine. Nevertheless I had more trouble at this hotel than any of the others we'd recently stayed in en route to Vancouver.

If you are considering a longer stay in the West End The Sandman Suites is a good choice. There are any number of hotels in the area with more posh amenities but very few that give you the luxury of living in what is essentially a completely outfitted one bedroom apartment.

Room Tip: Arrange for a room on a higher floor facing the ocean. It's a million dollar view.
