We stayed for 4 nights beginning of September and had a suite on the twentieth floor. Location wise, this hotel is great, the street is full of colorful and wonderful restaurants and cafes. We tried a number of restaurants on the street and were not disappointed, especially Cazaba (come out of the hotel, turn right and walk to the end of the road till you reach the traffic lights and look opposite). Fantastic place, nice Persian food and excellent value for money.

Now back to the hotel, the suite we had was pleasant although dated, you get a washing machine/dryer which worked both perfectly and silently in our case, it took about an hour to wash a full single wash and a good 2-3 hours to dry (depends on how dry you like your clothes). You get a big kitchen, cooker, toaster, kettle, microwave, fridge and dish washer which helped us save a considerable amount of money on food as some nights we cooked and stayed in, rather than eating out every night and spending more money. This meant we had extra money to spend on visiting other sites. The area is noisy, you got the hospital (St Paul) near by and a fire station as well, so you do get to hear ambulances and fire engines most nights. Unlike the UK, the ambulances and fire engines do generate a lot of noise even if it's 3am. Luckily we were on the 20th floor, this is why my advice will be to get a suite from floor 15 and above if you can, do try hard and don't take NO for an answer, if you want a quiet sleep that is.

We noticed the cleaning became worse and worse as days passed on, on a number of occasions the cleaner forgot to empty our bins and we had to complain at the reception. We also noticed the beds were not changed properly but that only happened on one occasion. The most annoying thing of all was the WIFI, although you get it free but it's close to useless, i found myself going downstairs most of the time to Starbucks next door and used their WiFi, this was very annoying. I complained to the reception and they did offer me a free voucher to use the Business broadband in the lobby which I accepted, turned out to be slow although this might be the state of Broadband in general in that area and not the hotel's fault.

We did have a fire alarm on the night before we left, this meant we had to use the stairs from the 20th floor which was hard work, the level of communications from the reception was very bad, they didn't tell us anything and nor did they offer any apology or compensation for the disruption. They appeared frozen and not properly trained to deal with such situations. Luckily it was a false alarm and we went back to our room shortly afterwards (it was a chance to meet and talk to other guests, so it was fun for few minutes).

Overall, our stay was memorable and mostly good than bad, the hotel introduced us to the wonderful range of restaurants and a lovely, lively and enjoyable street (Davie Street). There is a bus stop on the left as you come out of the hotel, the number 6 goes to most places around the city. It also saved us a considerable amount of money on cooking and that's what you want from a hotel, a place where you can do your own thing, great location and have a bed in the end of the day to sleep on. I encourage you to come and try this hotel, you will not regret it, come with an open mind and enjoy the experience but if you are fussy or with very high expectations then you may need to look elsewhere but it will be a shame for you not to try this hotel, even just for location and the lovely food this street has to offer. Good luck and enjoy your stay in this great city.

The Sandman Suites is an unexpected gem in the Vancouver neighborhood called Davie Village. The suite was fully equipped, with a very comfortable bed, 2 TVs, a full kitchen, a dining table, desk and sofa... even a washing machine. Yes, you could live here. From the 10th floor, I had an incredible experience one night watching a pouring rain and lightning storm. The neighborhood is small and funky, full of inexpensive restaurants and lots of local shops. Plus access to public transport and taxis. About the only criticism was spotty wireless access. Good pick for anyone seeking moderately priced comfort.

Room Tip: Higher floors have better views.

The online photos look great but the rooms are really terrible. Kitchen was nice but the washer did not work right and it takes 4 hrs for just 1 load. The walls were damaged with holes and the rooms overall were dingy, paint and plaster peeling on the balcony and the rooms smelled quite musty. Exposes plumbing lines in the bathroom. The A/C is only in one room. either the living room or the bedroom. It was hot when we stayed and the A/C was in the living room and did not cool the bedroom very well. The TV's did not work properly, most channels were snowy and the remotes have all the number worn off so you don't know which buttons to push. Neither remote worked to turn the TV's on or off, we had to do that on the TV itself. Our last nite there the fire alarm went off at 1am. Woke us up and had to evacuate from the 21st floor for a false alarm. No apologies from the hotel. We paid $18 per nite for parking but upon leaving there was ticket on our car for a $100 fine because they did not see the parking pass in the corner of our windshield. We had to go back into the hotel so they could clear the parking ticket. The location is okay, but there are much better places to stay at the same price. The Rosedale on Robson, where we stayed last time, is a much nicer area and a much nicer hotel. We will never stay at a Sandman Hotel again.

Room Tip: If you get a suite make sure the A/C is in the bedroom and not the living room. It cannot cool both...

I've stayed in Sandman near Toronto Airport - superb - the location on Davie felt a little more downscale - but nevertheless was still reasonably good.

Room was clean with lots of space - full kitchen. Quiet location yet still near restaurants, grocery stores etc...

Overall I think reasonably good value at under $200/night.

What a gem ! We were on the 21st floor, with a view of Vancouver to die for!
The lounge/dining room/kitchen was large with lots of natural light from patio doors and windows.and the kitchen was extremely well equipped with cooker, microwave, fridge freezer, and even a dishwasher. Hidden away in the entrance hallway was a washer dryer. There was oodles of wardrobe space around the apartment ( this was no ordinary hotel room ). The staff were very friendly and helpful. There were a couple of minor issues with the room when we arrived, but these were addressed immediately. Only downside was getting to and from the room because of the number of floor and especially when the room maids were out and about. It was no real problem though. All in all, My wife and I could quite happily live there.

Room Tip: If only for the view ask for one of the higher floors.

Penthouse suites have good view - prices are very reasonable

Food and Restaurants all over

Some of the rooms have view of English Bay

Perfect for events downtown, or just a weekend out as we did

All the best

Room Tip: The higher the better the quality of the rooms get.

Room was hot like a furnace. Air conditioner initially did not work; front panel was missing and the knob was difficult to reach. Internet was worse than average. Front desk staff was very rude, repeatedly asked if I understand what he said… Paid the fines and switched to another place. I will not stay at this place again.
