“Good location, but a bit dated”
Reviewed 6 July 2014

We stayed here for the weekend with our 1 year old daughter. The room wasn't very big but we managed to make it work for the limited amount of time we spent there. We managed to have her playpen in the living room while we had our own space in the bedroom. It was really nice to have a kitchen to eat breakfast in while we were there. They didn't supply dishsoap, only dishwasher soap, so we ended up running the dishwasher twice daily for only a few dishes which seemed wasteful. The room was a bit outdated but was still clean.

We were hoping to use the pool but with Vancouver weather, we were unable to use the outdoor pool with our daughter.

It is only a short walk to Robson street and the downtown area. Also the ferry to Granville island is only a 10 minute walk away.

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floors facing the ocean had a great view.

we were staying on 6 floor and it was just awful. Suite was so outdated, with very loud probably 20 years old condition/fan/heater unit in the bedroom and same old fan in bathroom, warn carpet. Cracks on the selling, torn wallpaper in bathroom. Nothing like they show on pictures

Room Tip: 6 floor suites desperate need to be remodeled!

The staff could not have been more accommodating. Ocean view is spectacular and location is perfect-restaurants and grocery stores etc all very convenient. Walking distance to Stanley Park and other beaches. Very family friendly.

Great hotel, great staff, great location, quiet, priced reasonably with every amenity but..... had the worst bed I have found in a hotel in years. I complained to staff at check out and was told the hotel had recently changed all the mattresses, I can only guess they must have missed the one I slept on. Otherwise, my rating would have been a five.

I have stayed many times at this hotel in it's various iterations since 1996 when it was the Parkhill. It closed for a few years and re-opened as the current Sandman Suites on Davie. You can read other reviews of this property which are varied, depending on a given traveler's expectations and perhaps sense of entitlement. Keep in mind that as a general rule a hotel delivers relative to what you pay for it, and that what is cheap for one city can be expensive for another city.

One reason I stay at the Sandman Suites is because it's in an area I genuinely like. It's in the West End of Vancouver (not to be confused with "West Vancouver" which is a totally different part of town). the West End is known for being close to downtown, having a mixed, vibrant street scene and nightlife which includes a significant LGBTQXYZ community, lots of local restaurants and grocery stores, along with the occasional sex store and small hardware store. There is a large 24 hour Shopper's Drug Mart across the street which I've been grateful for many times.

In short, it's a real urban neighbourhood. Those looking for a more sanitized street scene when they walk out the door could try the Sheraton Wall which is only a few blocks away but may be more to some traveller's liking.

Okay. The hotel could use sprucing up a bit. It's due for a ten-year refresh. But, for the price, which for Vancouver can be amazingly cheap in off-season and comparatively affordable in high-season, you get a fair amount for your money. The rooms are all suites which gives you a separate bedroom with combined living, eating, kitchen area. There are basic dishes (oddly there is dishwasher detergent but never dish soap), and cutlery, knives, glasses, dishtowels, etc. For those on extended stays there is a full refrigerator, coffee maker, stove/oven, microwave and one of those combo washer/dryer. The suites are smallish but I personally prefer a small suite at the Sandman to a single room at another hotel in the same star-rating.

The furnishings are not Roche Bobois but they are ok. If I could change one thing at this price-point I would upgrade the eating table and coffee table. They have a finish like something a first time furniture restorer might do - then redo. But I digress...

I have always found the beds to be very comfortable. My home bed is a TemperPedic so that says a lot coming from me. The linens are clean and of good quality and the towels in the bathroom are thick and absorbent. The little bathroom things (shampoo, lotion, soap) are actually some of the nicest I've encountered, again at this price point. I especially like the Verbena Lotion and the mild bar soap that won't strip the skin off your body.

Clothes storage is a slight issue. There are adequate drawers and bedroom closet space but the hall closets seem like afterthoughts and are small and not deep enough. Sometimes they've been retrofitted with one of those closet organizer racks and the hangers hang off the wire, not a bar. As a result it's weird to manoeuvre the hanger hook into it and your jacket hangs at an angle to the closet space in order to close the door. If using the hall closet effortlessly is a personal obsession this may be a deal breaker for you.

The location of the secured parking is somewhat obscurely located however once you find it off the back lane it's fine. It's below grade and there is no valet but, really, it's fine.

The one thing lots of people complain about, sometimes quite bitterly, are the elevators. There are three of them and it's true... they... are... slow. Once one arrives they are fast enough but for some reason you can wait a long time on your floor or in the lobby until one arrives. My survival tactic for this issue is to talk to other people about how slow the elevators are. I have often wondered if there is a different algorithm that could be programmed into the things but have long ceased to ask the front desk about the "elevator upgrades" that have/are to be implemented. For me a slow elevator is not worth having an aneurysm over (apologies to anyone who has had an aneurysm). If you are in a hurry or are are an impatient person by nature you will find the elevators annoying.

The last time I stayed there was no in-room safe in the room and for some reason I thought there always was one before. Check if this is important to you. Wifi is free and bandwidth is good. Hot water is plentiful and instant. Ironing board and iron and hair dryer in every room. There is a pretty nice outdoor pool that is open in the warmer months and the exercise room is fine. I've never used the pull-out sofa so can't comment on its comfort. Every room has a balcony that you can walk out on. The view can be spectacular for a first time visitor on the higher floors. There's no furniture on them and the surfaces are due for repainting. Otherwise, it's a balcony.

Staff have always been courteous and responsive. They sometimes get very busy like at any hotel. Cut them some slack. If you are polite and patient they will be polite and helpful in return.

There are lots of bars, clubs and traffic in the area and it is a centre for nightlife. If you are sensitive to noise get a higher room, use earplugs, or get a room somewhere else. Also, some people get offended because there is a sexually-oriented store across the street. Not me but ymmv.

To sum up: in my opinion the Sandman Suites gives very good value at its price point for this city. It is not the Waldorf Astoria and definitely has its quirks, but I think it does a good job overall in providing a clean comfortable room at a reasonable price. If you know what to expect you'll probably have a good experience.

Room Tip: This hotel is in a busy urban neighbourhood. Noise sensitive people should get a higher floor.

I stayed here for 3 nights on a trip to Vancouver. Its superbly located about mid-way down Davie Street which gives it good local transport links to/from the airport on the SkyRail (Yaletown station at the end of Davie street about 13 mins walk) and also for walking around the west end being very close to English Bay Beach and Stanley Park.

it was about £110 a night - I say "about" because their rates are daily so you may not pay the same value each night - I just divided by total by the 3 nights I was there.

I got a kingsize ocean view apartment on the 17th floor which had truly magnificent views over the ocean facing to the west. The rooms are very dated and mine had evidence of recent "fixes" that weren't complete (there was some recent plastering of a window frame that was still unpainted). The hallways had a very musty smell to them, luckily my room didn't, but I kept the balcony door open when I was there.

My bed linen was VERY old - the bottom sheet had a 6" rip in it and the top sheets had other (much smaller) rips which just looked like wear and tear but they really should replace all of them. The reason I have given it 3 stars and not 2 is because of the location and views. Its worth it just for that, but they would get better ratings if they did a bit of re-modelling/updating.

There is a restaurant you can charge meals to your room from, but there are so many nice places to eat in Vancouver that I ate out all the time.

Internet was included in the price. Overall, I'd stay there again but I'm not sure its for the budget conscious - there are probably better value for money hotels in the same area, but I doubt with the same views. I didn't try the pool or gym on the 3rd floor but these are also included in the price.

Room Tip: there are noisy ice making machines in the corridor so get rooms numbered about the 01, 02, 03 range...
